Apparentlt DQ 12 is going to be a bit darker then previous ones and have some Life choosing system.

from here:

"
Square Enix Co. announced the release of the latest installment in the popular "Dragon Quest" role-playing video game series, which will be called "Dragon Quest XII: Erabareshi Unmei no Honoo" (the flames of fate).

The company has yet to reveal a release date or the gaming platforms, but it aims for a worldwide release, it said on May 27.

The news was announced during an online event commemorating the 35th anniversary of the first "Dragon Quest," or "Dragon Warrior" in North America, which was released on May 27, 1986.

"The latest edition has a dark tone to it. It is a 'Dragon Quest' for adults," said series creator Yuji Horii. "During the course of the scenario, the player is forced to make many choices and must choose how to live their life."

The gameplay will also change.

"The command battle system will be renewed," he added.

The video game series has sold more than 82 million units. "Dragon Quest XI," which was released in July 2017, sold more than 6.5 million units."

A dark tone... Will the MC constantly talk about chaos? I feel like Square-Enix has been trying to break into the west in all the wrong ways after the success of shadowbringers.

If you can't give these developers a bit of faith even after the resounding success that was Dragon Quest XI, I don't know what to tell you.

Having a new perspective on the story is not a bad thing, actually with the style of this series it could be extremely interesting.

But this is Neogaf and people must complain about death of new ideas and introduction of new ideas at the same time.

I like innovation and stuff but......

Just give me my regular goofy Dragon Quest formula: A political nobody who never left his village goes on a life changing journey from big cities to cursed forests/dungeons, snowy mountains, a town with a casino and meeting even more goofy characters while doing it. Only to learn to everybody's shock that he is actually the chosen one to save the world from An unstoppable evil which can not be defeated unless you find a dozen of Kong metal slimes.

DQ will always be DQ at least in the mainline games so if you've enjoyed past DQ games it's fair to say you'll enjoy the next one, a change in the turn based battle system isn't as significant as going from TB to Action for example, and this is DQ it's going to be traditional for better or worst so as not to upset the HUGE base market in Japan.

Speaking of dark tone, VII and VIII HAD dark tones, it's just wasn't explored enough.
