Drama at Kotaku

Nice thread title updates. I don't even care about Kotaku but it's fun to see that all of the salty ass dipshits in here will now have to come to terms with the fact that Kotaku isn't dead. Do you guys even realize that for as fucking dumb era is this place is just the same on the opposite end of the spectrum? Any time DERP SJWS/POLITICS/ETC get mentioned the majority here go full fucking retard? If anything it's just as enjoyable to watch you meltdown as those morons on the other site. Hard to figure why there are no insiders left here at all.

I wasn't aware that shitty-ass Kotaku was the mecca of videogame journalism that so many make out to be in here. Apparently it reaches and influences all videogame publications. Not to mention the dumbasses who comment that Deadspin should stick to sports. Guess what? It never was a sports only website. No sense arguing over it, I'll just let y'all go back to reading Kotaku. Have fun!

The entire industry has been infiltrated and decimated by these “woke” cry babies.
Like the Rimworld review by PC gamer, the reviewer criticised it for being too “heteronormative” and by all accounts hadn’t even played the game, when confronted he/she/it/some other fucking pronoun pretended they were going to kill themselves/herself/himself

What almost every gaming media outlet did to Kingdom Come Deliverance was imoral at best.

"i get a salary and benefits from a company with a business department that sells ads, posts deals, and puts together other revenue streams."

What other revenue streams? Seriously consider that question.
What is another substantial revenue stream for an online games website with no subscription service?

So again... how does clicks (aka web traffic aka what advertisers give a fuck about) not equate to revenue which you derive your paycheck for?

Can Jason explain this all to us like the simple minded fools that don't know the inner workings of journalism cause I smell bullshit by his own words.

And to whom they sell ads and affiliated deals if not to the same ones that they evaluate products for? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

this offends the intelligence of anyone who has already left kindergarten.

but... no... no correlations... lol

How do you not get fired for not doing your job?

I like the fact that some people here try to spin the narrative from 'guy got fired because he talked with his foot in his mouth' to 'Deadspin got tired of Kotaku's SJW/Woke politics and wants to shut them down'. It's obvious that Kotaku staff are trying to rile their fans via twitter into harassing Deadspin to let them be or something, but no matter how this will end, one thing is certain.

The people who comprise Kotaku aren't going anywhere.

You'll see them again. Maybe on Patreon, maybe on YouTube, maybe on their own website, but from the moment they have fans and followers, they won't be gone anytime soon. Unless they do something which will evaporate their goodwill with their fandom, they're safe.

WTF are you talking about? The guy who got fired said he got fired for not sticking to sports. And before the cries started about editorial autonomy, the Kotaku people (some at least) were being all cryptic about the future. Assuming that the owner got sick of the woke crap (stick to sports or get fired), and that Kotaku was facing the same fate (as they are crying for attention about uncertainty in their futures) was not spin. It was nothing more than the common sense reaction to the cries for attention that caused it.

But yeah, power to them if they go open their own thing. Frankly, with all the talk about solidarity, editorial autonomy, and the shit posts on Kotaku about how to bitch at Kotaku's owner, I don't understand why they haven't left yet. Maybe oppression is only bad until you have to support yourself is the real mantra.

But they won’t be united under the brand of Kotaku anymore, making $50k a year for wtiting bs that only gets traffic because the name “Kotaku” used to mean something.

They will have to fend for themselves with their own fanbases under their own merit.

Now I imagine Jason Schreier could easily get by in such an environment, but the others? Not a chance.

That's what they make?

So apparently Kotaku is not dead and their writer are trying to get the Gizmodo Media Group union (GMG Union, a local branch of WGA East) to wrestle some power from management, which they might have grounds to do if any of the actions performed by the owners contradict the CBA (collective bargaining agreement). If that happened, they may have a very good case to take to the National Labor Relations Board.

Sure. They can celebrate their eventual victory in the unemployment line. None of these thrash sites are making money. That's why they're resold for a fraction of what was paid for them 5-10 years ago

Sooooo... what's going on is a case of "You're a games site? Okay, report on games, not politics. Insert politics into it and you're shitcanned. " if that's what it's all about, then I'm okay with it. It might actually get me to visit them again.

I'm celebrating the news that Kotaku is burning to the ground. That's one down, several other liberal propaganda rags to go. Here's hoping Polygon is next. Then PCGamer, Game Informer, and IGN.

Are there any decent websites or publications left?
I stopped buying retro gamer magazine last year after I read an article where the author apologised for enjoying a leisure suit Larry game 20 years ago!
Now I never buy gaming magazines and avoid gaming websites because I’m tired of all the politics and virtue signalling.

Honestly - I get most of what I care to know from GAF - but I heard good things about https://www.oneangrygamer.net/ and there's another site, but I can't quite remember it..

And should be the key takeaway here. Kotaku and its sister sites have lost immense value over time to the point that their current owners don't think it's worth giving them any special treatment. Jason thinks Kotaku is still a reputable gaming site, but G/O Media thinks otherwise and that is what matters most.

So you'd think Kotaku will hunker down and actually try to earn back some credibility? Nope, Jason thinks it's the alt-right and GamerGate's fault. No lessons were learned and history will repeat itself.

For Japanese games, Gematsu and NicheGamer are good sites to go to. Siliconera is another site I go to frequently.

Wow. That's fucked up. Leisure Suit Larry is awesome. I never apologize for liking anything.

Remember that most of them position themselves in the Bay Area or in New York, where making even double that is basically poverty.
Their job can be performed from literally any internet-connected town in the USA. This is why most forms of legacy media are dying, too.

They make a decent wage but it's not "decent enough" because they want to be lifestyle writers, living in the big city and travelling abroad. This puts them at the mercy of the money, because some willing benefactor has to see enough profit in their lifestyle writing to underfund it.

Remember, Kotaku was simply a blog for the longest time. They are lifestyle writers, and they will do anything to protect that lifestyle and the people who enable their lifestyle.

This desire for lifestyle makes them particularly vulnerable to bribery and conflict of interests and ideological subversion. It's the perfect environment for it, actually. Reminds me a bit of the socialist socialites in Ellison's 'Invisible Man'. They were subverted so easily and discarded so easily.

I've been meaning to read Invisible Man. Heard good things about it.

There's one thing about Jason Schreier that has always driven me crazy. He is Kotaku's News Editor, which means that his job isn't just to report news (and I mean actual news, not just sporadic rumors), but also to oversee news reporting enabling and encouraging the rest of the staff to perform news coverage in a timely and extensive manner.

Not only his personal news coverage is extremely, extremely sporadic (as you can see yourself https://kinja.com/jschreier ), but Kotaku is likely the outlet I know with the worst track record in covering gaming news. I'm always baffled by how much relevant gaming news they absolutely fail to cover. Just as an example, today NiOh 2 got a release date and they didn't even take notice, but I could bring a million such examples.

Let's not even go into the fact that they have news posts that are literally 45 words, which is terribly lazy and abysmal in terms of providing details in an even remotely informative way. Driving quality in news reporting both for himself and the rest of the staff should be Schreier's actual job, but over the years I saw absolutely no effort in that direction. Sloppy and sporadic news reporting is Kotaku's standard, and that's done directly under his responsibility.

As a News Editor myself, it baffles me that someone having "News Editor" in his byline would be even remotely satisfied with such a disaster of a news department. I know many, many, sites with a fraction of Kotaku's resources and staff doing an exponentially better job.

Jason Schreier is like Jesus over at Resetera.

When someone tried posting archived links to Patrick Klepek's "Rape time" and casual racism tweets, folks got banned immediately and the posts edited to remove the links. Basically, they use these journalists (sic) as a way of spreading their extreme leftism and puritan moral censorship to the masses, and actively cover-up anything they don't want to hear about them. It's crazy to think you basically get banned just for posting an archived link, an honest, unedited, snapshot of someones twitter feed. How long until you'll get accused of being alt-right for posting a Wikipedia link if they haven't already done that.

Jason Schrier being a little bitch to folks in that Restera thread just goes to show how brazen it is, blowing off steam on the peons they've indoctrinated to never question them because to do so would make you literally a gamergate nazi.

Good riddance! Every time I am looking for a review of a game I want to buy I see these dipshits give the game a negative review over it not going along with their politics. Anybody else remember when they made a big deal over Cuphead using the rubberhose art style saying since it came from the early 1900's and things like Looney Tunes making racist cartoon episodes, the art syle was by default racist.

It’s nothing new. When someone mentioned Kotaku in a negative light on OldGAF, I used to call it the “Press Sneak Fuck Bat Signal” because sure enough, you could bet your balls Jason would be along shortly to defend his website’s honour by ignoring valid criticisms and cherry picking comments to respond to.

Stephen Totilo did it too as did a handful of IGN employees. Justin Davis comes to mind. The one who’s username was Garfep. Brian Altano. All of them would come in an put down their audience whilst ignoring valid criticisms. It was pathetic and made me instantly lose respect for them.
