Durante Presents: FFXIII resolution unlocking (GeDoSaTo plugin) released - pre-alpha

I tweeted SquareEnix about their abject failure and said that I wouldn't buy the next two of the trilogy unless they fix the port and that they should be ashamed of themselves. I also made sure to note that it is worse than the Dark Souls port, and in fact the worst port I've seen since Devil May Cry 3.

I encourage everyone to raise a stink. This is just straight up disrespectful of them.

Just curious, is it realistically within your ability to fix the weird framerate stuff?
I can't say that for sure yet, but probably not.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should also mention that I'm like the anti-dark10x when it comes to variable framerates -- I don't notice or mind them much. So I'm always far more motivated to work on IQ issues than framerate issues. Also, for me, so far, the game has performed very well.

The person you'd want for that is Nwks ;)

I disagree.

Nothing against "raising a stink" as you put it, but you should always remain factual.
Well Dark Souls at least had consistent performance for me unfixed. It was 720p 30fps but there were no stuttering issues any time a scene change or battle happened.

Other than the random slowdowns, downsampling from 5120*2880 gives me little hiccups on my 2500k/6970. Seems to run a good 60fps, by the looks of it I've even got a little more to squeeze too.

That's too bad. Thanks for everything you're doing, though! You are literally the best Gaffer.

Yeah, I'm honestly pretty impressed by the actual rendering performance of the game at insane resolutions (e.g. 5120x2880 is 16x the PS3 resolution, and at twice the framerate. So 32x the pixels)

It's amazing how one fan managed to do in a day what a huge multi billion dollar international company couldn't for four years since the game came out on consoles to PC. Kudos.

I wouldn't even call it a variable framerate. Well, it does vary but it seems to be switching between 30 and 60 FPS caps. So basically there's thing in the game that seem to be dropping it gradually down to 30, then it'll go gradually back up to 60. It's such a weeeeiiiird issue. Never seen anything like it before.

your new tag is glorious!

also thanks for doing this for us.

Oh you described it perfectly, it's exactly what I have.

I just downloaded GeDoSaTo for the first time.

It sounds fun to be able to play things and new resolutions. But I'm a little bit confused.
Sorry... I'm new to this..

Will the new GeDoSaTo work with Final Fantasy XIII, or do I need to download something extra? And it sounds like I need to edit an .ini file to do things...

I'm going to have to read tutorials to figure this out...

Yup, it's doing the same for me in the most random places.

I mean how does this even work? Do they compile the port and just check for bugs? Is there any effort whatsoever during the conversion?

I'm legitimely asking! I know Durante's skill level is well above a lot of people that work in the same field (he defended his PhD recently if I'm not mistaken). But did they just turn this over to some BSc. level dude out of college to take care of?

The framerate hitches aren't too bad for me. Stays at 60 like 90% of the time. Just disable any framerate counters and you probably won't notice the drops too much.

Thanks Durante for the amazingly quick work on fixing the resolution issue, pretty happy to replay this game in glorious high res (even if I wasn't much of a fan of the game). I'll probably try to donate something through paypal over the weekend

Yeah, it goes 60, maybe short hesitation at 45 on the way down then 30 and back. It doesn't even seem tied to things happening or particular things displayed, it's just in constant flux as you run/look around.

Meanwhile the CPU/GPU are like "Wake me when you have something to do. *Zzzzzzzzzz*"

So weird. By all means it should be as amazing as MT Framework games.

Good day Durante.
Wanted to know what we can expect in the next update for your fix? Based on what I'm reading, would this work on a laptop?

Was getting awful stuttering and framerate fluctuations. So I capped it at 30fps and thought "This is ok, I guess" and then the damn thing started stuttering anyway. Even as it maintained a perfect 30fps it still stuttered like crazy. It'll start stuttering and then I'll have to minimize it for a minute or two and then the stuttering is gone only for it to return in about 5-10 minutes.

WTF...

It's probably less that they couldn't but they didn't want to.

Quick cash grab so why would you bother ... right ?

Thanks for the hard work Durante :D

Um... where is a tutorial that will teach me how to use GeDoSaTo?

The site has me confused..

Just download it and run the .exe.
Then you just run the tool from the folder (default is c:\gedosato)
Then you can minimize the tool and just run the game.

Default is 4K but pretty much any modern PC with a half decent GPU will handle it with ease.

So... I don't have to edit anything?

Oh, and thank you for helping.

Yeah, i have bad stuttering too but it seems thats a problem many have.

You would think so, but this isn't true in practice. 4k brings my fairly high end computer well below 60fps even without the GPU usage being anywhere near 100%.

There's issues with the framerate but they don't seem related to actual rendering performance but more as a result of some strange issue which I'd guess is something to do with some effects and animations. See the above posts.

Sorry for the noob question guys/Girls

I've downloaded the application and opened it it says it's activated so is there anything I need to do here? :S

EDIT: Figured it out :)

EDIT: 2 everything was good upto the in game scene it was all blurry except for one big chunk in the corner it was clear but the rest of the screen was really blurred out

I think a couple other people had this issue too. Not sure if they fixed it.

A great start, but looking at your pull request it might be too indiscriminate.
Yes it was indeed.
It took me a bit to get it up and running since I basically installed VS2013 and dled all the dependencies when you said you'd go and I noticed the menu issues.

Since this seems to be AMD issue I'll see if I can do something about it...

My solution to large unexplained framerate drops when not using 99%~ GPU load is usually add more resolution! Though this sounds more like framepacing issues or something up with the VSYNC implementation. Anyone fancy running a benchmark in FRAPS and use FRAPS Bench Viewer to post their frametimes? If not I'll do it when I get home. If it's snapping between 16ms and 33ms it will be obvious.

Also, this may just be I/O issue, with HDD not being able to stream the data quick enough.
Anyone here tried to move the sys folder to an SSD?

Ah that;s the issue i'm having :) AMD card swell.

The FPS seems inconsistent swell opening cutscene at first for me was 40FPS then when I restarted it was at 55 :S

Have to give one kudo's to Square for the easy mode, playing just for story and cba with all that grinding again

For some reason at 8K, the game maximises vram usage during cutscenes at 1.6gb. It's the highest I see it. I also get wierd framerate drops during cutscenes to 20fps lol.

Probably going to wait for some more fixes to appear. The menu one and box on upper right is a bit of a pain.

Not sure if this will provide any insight:

(That's me starting the benchmark in the field, getting into a battle, and getting back to the field, by the way)

I guess I assumed SE, of all publishers, to actually port their games to PC in a better state.

I'm definitely in a wait and see attitude when it comes to the next two games.

SEEurope (ex Eidos) provides top-notch PC ports.
But this is a SEJapan job. And we all know Japan totally understands PCs. Totally.

Those stutters that possibly are linked to HID devices autodetection/validation endless timers were seen years ago only in IO-Interactive games like Mini Ninjas or Kane & Lynch.

Very curious that IO-Interactive is a company owned by Square Enix since 2009. That's the year of FFXIII release.

Well one thing is for certain that's not an even delivery of frames! Reading the Steam Community forums there's some funky 'fixes' floating around which seem more placebo than anything else. Cheers for posting though.

Funnily someone posted in the OT about plugging a controller in and stuttering disappearing. I can't remember having any issues with Mini Ninja's or Kane & Lynch but Prototype had a similar issue that any HID device that was installed on your system but not enabled/connected would do the same thing. Disabling all devices not in use cleared that up.

Though that's a very funny coincidence with SE acquiring IO at around the same time.

I had regular dips to 53 fps every two seconds the firt time I started the game. Both in cinematics and real time.

Second time I used GeDoSaTo and not only that fix the 720p cap, but the dips too.

I don't understand why these games are locked to 720p? Like if one guy can change it so that's not the case what is the reason SE did that? The "lazy" excuse is way too simple, they have hundreds of people there and it presumably took this guy less than a day to do this. Is it because they thought unlocking it would create errors in other areas? I'm interested in a reason that's something other than "they're lazy" or "they're dumb".
