Dusk Golem's List of Every Horror Game Ever (Details, Opinions, Videos, On-Going)

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Great thread! Just played Fatal Frame 1 last week and really enjoyed it. Very much like old-school RE in terms of gameplay (with a camera/ghosts instead of guns/zombies, obviously), but much darker and creepier. The game does an excellent job of building suspense and ratcheting up the tension as the game goes along. The scariest part of Fatal Frame is the anticipation of what may or may not happen, on a moment-to-moment basis.

I'm currently playing Fatal Frame II, and am a couple of hours in. Hopefully I can finish it up before the end of October.

Finally bit at that Corpse Party, couldn't pass it at 50% off. Still trying to figure out where I went wrong in Lone Survivor (completely confused as to what I am supposed to do next) and even more recently experienced the amazing Hotline Miami for the first time, well now I'll throw CP in the mix. Feel like I've got a pretty baller Vita game rotation going on right now.

Great thread Dusk Golem!

I am one of those wusses that can only watch let's plays of most horror games (sorry, developers!), but I do have a strong interest in them (and movies as well) when it comes to their spatial design, pacing etc.

What I particularly like is how most of them stimulate and enable a higher awareness of the spaces that the game (or movie) takes place in. Every corner, hallway, door or object is a potential danger or helpful item, so this really leads to a typical pace and higher state of spatial awareness (and often also to a higher emphasis on atmosphere and details in the environment).

When you think about it, players of horror games could in fact be the ideal player for any game designer, i.e. a player that is willing to investigate thoroughly and be fully immersed in the game world. Ideally this would be reflected by using Dark Souls-type environmental storytelling (i.e. incorporating hints in the game world itself that the player can discover and decipher on his/her own in other worlds) instead of being told what the game world is about through letters and such that take you out of the game, but quite often this is not the case.

In general though, as an academic interested in overall human-space/place interaction, the horror genre is fascinating because of its environmental storytelling and spatial design potential. If anyone here can point me to some good articles or books on the use of spatial design, pacing, everyday objects etc. in horror games and movies, please drop me a PM or respond here.

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.
Hey OP I share your interest. I haven't read through the list yet but I will later. I've been following this guy's web site for a number of years now (http://www.dreamdawn.com/sh/), he's a developer with the goal of playing every survival horror game released.

Haven't read the topic yet just saw JaseC post it in Steam thread and I want to ask if anyone here (DUSK?) has played Dead Effect. It's an Early Access first person horror game set in space and I only played the first episode but it's decent..

I'd love to see your thoughts on the old Suda games, like Moonlight Syndrome and The Silver Case. They're quite twisted.

Killer7 has elements of them, but it's Katamari Damacy compared to some of the stuff in Moonlight Syndrome.

Oh my, thank you very much~

I am very interested in these games, like very. I have played Michigan: Report From Hell and Killer7, but not any of the Twilight Syndrome Games or Silver Case yet. But I do own Moonlight Syndrome and should play soon as the only Twilight Syndrome game that's been translated. I wish more games in the series were as its been a series that's always interested me.

Give this a read:

Several of the links are broken, but you can get a lot of data there if you dig enough.

Also, a resource/translation for chapter 1.

Rewatched your RE4 LP a couple of weeks ago and it got me all excited to play that game again.

I play a lot of horror, I get reminded to update every once in a while when it gets bumped up by someone. And every time I've played at least several more horror games since it was last posted, though there's literally hundreds I still need to post about. XD; I've finished over half of the library of horror games for PSX and PS2, finished over 75% of all horror games released on SEGA consoles, been doing some old-school horror games on NES and SNES recently, been a lot of horror games coming out and been sampling the Steam library of them.

Can you recommend me some good/overlooked japanese horror games for PSX?

Just finished fatal frame V and remembered myself on how good this thread is. I also kinda remember on how good Kenji Eno suddenly and would recommend D series and Enemy Zero.

Those three title is also one of my favorite horror games om dreamcast.
