Dusk Golem's List of Every Horror Game Ever (Details, Opinions, Videos, On-Going)

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Awesome thread, subbed.

Which of the PSX horror games has aged best in your opinion for me to play on Vita?

I see the Res Evils are on sale at the moment. I don't remember 1 and 2 very well (I remember Nemesis really well for some reason, maybe because it was a lot shorter) so was thinking of starting with the Directors Cut of 1 but apparently the soundtrack has been changed for the worse.

I wouldn't mind replaying Dino Crisis either though but I'm gonna let you choose a game for me.

edit: No rush of course man, whenever you've finished all your posts.

Looking good so far, thanks for this. Unrelated but you should finish your playthough of White Day because I'll never play it myself :D

I think Silent Hill 3 is my favorite of the series. I just love some of the imagery in that game. When I think about what I love visually about the series, most of the time it's something from that game.

Ye gods. I wish you luck, this is... well, quite an ambitious thread concept. I'm really excited to see what comes of this, though. Horror is a genre that I really appreciate, and this'll be a good way to see what I've missed.

Regarding Silent Hill.

Opinion: A wonderfully oppressive game that also, like the first Resident Evil, has an air of mystery that later entries in the series don't quite capture.

I feel this way as well. The feel of something much larger sleeping under the surface was never really replicated in future titles. Anecdote: In my city,
there's an antique shop in an area that's similar to the location in Silent Hill (at least as far as I remember it). I'm always reminded of the game when I drive past it.
The city in future games didn't really look like the original, either. I've always preferred it.

Good luck with this thread, I hope you realize the undertaking you've assumed! ;-)

Witch's House looks very interesting as a horror game I've not played, I'll be giving that a try so thanks for the recommendation!

Lovely thread. Subscribed.

I am a big wuss when it comes to horror games, but I am able to enjoy them in small dosages.

<3 this thread. Good work.

Looking forward to your piece on Fatal Frame, Siren, Rule of Rose, Clock Tower, Kuon, and REMake.

Regarding Silent Hill, my favorite scary part was the
3rd floor button mysteriously appearing in Alchemilla Hospital.

Shouldn't you start off with really old horror games? Like for the 2600? Haunted House and Ghost Manor come to mind.

You need to add Decay from Xbox Live indies since that is fucking scary and would class as a adventure survvial horror title.

I'm not a fan of horror but will give these titles a play.
One thing though: Shadows of the Damned isn't much of a horror game IMO.

As with your RPG Maker thread, this thread'll doubtlessly become an excellent source of new games for me to check out.

I'm mainly interested in the 2D top-down horror games (The Witch's House, Mad Father etc), particularly if they have a clear Japanese influence, but I'm thinking of branching out into some 3D experiences such as White Day and DreadOut. I enjoyed Fatal Frame 2 in particular, although by "enjoyed" I basically mean "was scared shitless to the point where I stopped playing." This means that White Day will probably stop my heart.

I have to say (again) that the The Witch's House is still my favourite game I've played in 2013. I can't emphasise enough how significant an impact the
true ending
had on my mentality. I did actually make a pseudo |OT| for it, and it got about as much attention as I expected!

Glad you decide to do this sucker sooner rather than later. Can't wait to see the future additions. (Plus it gives me a nice list of stuff to play myself!)

Nanashi no Game (The Nameless Game)
Available For: Nintendo DS
Sub-Genre: First-Person Exploration-Horror/2D RPG-Horror
Video Series: Nanashi no Game (The Nameless Game) English Patch
Description: Rumors have been circulating about a Role-Playing Game for the TS (a game system that looks suspiciously familiar) that's recently grown in popularity; people say that the game has been cursed. The rumor goes that whoever doesn't complete the RPG in a certain number of days will die. You are one of those who have played the game. You didn't put much stock in the rumors at first until you visit your friend Odaka's apartment and find him dead. Suddenly, you realize that the things that happen in the game are happening to you in real life and death is approaching you. As the clock ticks, can you find a way to escape the curse?
Opinion: This is essentially an Asian horror movie in game form. The story is actually pretty interesting, if not cheesy sometimes, but it does a good job at splitting up the two types of gameplay. Half of the game is spent in 3D spaces where you explore and avoid ghost who can instantly kill you (but are slow). The second half is composed of an 8-bit glitchy RPG that usually has symbolism for what is happening in the 3D segments or a clue to what you're supposed to be doing. There aren't proper puzzles really, and the gameplay may be a bit simple, but it does a wonderful job with its handheld platform and creating a tense atmosphere that can get you quite frantic, especially when the special chasing enemies show up...
Who Might Like It: Those who enjoy Asian horror films and would be interested in a game stylized like that, those who enjoy 'meta' games (games about games), those who would like a good and fairly chilling handheld horror game
Favorite Moment:
The train segment as the best friend, looking for your boyfriend by following his voice, which is oddly disfigured, and an RPG game segment involving a maze...

I really wanted to like this one. The concept is nothing short of fascinating and the initial presentation is perfect. Even goes so far as to have a fake DS boot up menu for the 'cursed game'. Controls are just total ass though so I gave up rather quickly.

Awesome thread OP! I love listening to people talk about horror games but as I discovered when I bought Silent Hill on release day, I am too chicken to play them lol.

What exactly fulfils the role of horror? 3D Monster Maze from the *very* early days of the ZX81 is arguably an ur-example of a survival horror game (mindless threat who charges you on sight, no weaponry), but it's extremely primitive and not *very* scary in the light of modern tech (although it's still got a spark to it... HE IS HUNTING FOR YOU). It may not actually scare you, but it might be an interesting thing to look at from a historical standpoint.

Also, what about games with horror imagery where the basic gameplay isn't actually that scary? Another from the Speccy era I'd note is Soft & Cuddly, a fairly standard mazey platformer but with some unusually graphic scenery.

From the big ol' world of text adventures:

Free, conventional:
Anchorhead
Babel
Theatre

Free, YMMV whether they count as horror, but I'd say they do:
Slouching Towards Bedlam
Kaged

(All free adventures other than Anchorhead and Theatre were part of the Interactive Fiction competition, and so are designed to be beatable in around two hours)

Commercial:
The Lurking Horror

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
This thread made me check out Nanashi no Game. I dunno but the controls seem like ass. Is the game hard?

This thread is amazing, so subbing to it.

Your favorite moment in Alone in the Dark is the part where I simply said fuck this noise and quit the game. Hahaha.

Also, I would love to play Saya No Uta, but my PC isn't in the most private spot in my house. I don't want my parents to walk in the room and seeing
loli nudity.
The item in the spoiler may be accurate or false, I believe someone mentioned said item on this forum. Some clarification would be awesome! But yeah, I love VN, and Saya No Uta is on my list.

Also, have you touched Rule of Roses or Siren: Blood Curse?

I think Silent Hill 3 is my favorite of the series. I just love some of the imagery in that game. When I think about what I love visually about the series, most of the time it's something from that game.

I enjoyed Silent Hill 3, but it was way too actiony for my tastes. Two is my favorite of the traditional Silent Hills, but Shattered Memories is my favorite in the overall franchise.

That's my October ritual, to play more horror than I already do. A suitably creepy month for such a set-up, and the list should be fairly lengthy by that point.

This is a brilliant idea. I'll be done with school, so I'll have nothing but time on hand. So, a horror-heavy month for October will be superb. Thanks for the idea!
