EA: HD Remakes Happen ‘When You’ve Run Out of Ideas’

Electronic Arts has little interest in re-releasing its old games, so don’t expect that Mass Effect Trilogy remake to release any time soon. When publishers release old games on new platforms, EA COO Peter Moore told IGN, “It feels like pushing stuff out because you’ve run out of ideas.”

Moore explained why EA isn’t into this approach to releasing games. “Remakes, because of who we are, and this broad portfolio of intellectual property...you add all that together, I don’t know where we find the time to do remakes,” Moore said. “We’re a company that just likes to push forward.”

Remake this thread if old.

That's why it's more profitable to make brand new games that look like better versions of their predecessors but play exactly the same.

That's not true at all. Nothing stops you from making both.

And you know, they're not exactly in the right position to say that when Fifa or Madden exist.

What about when your audience wants them because the originals are locked away on old hardware?

Why don't you make both? Why does EA consider games disposable instead of appreciated and beloved media?

HD remakes are about as 'unnecessary' as re-releasing old movies on Bluray after retransferring them from the 35mm film. Preservation of classic titles is something the game industry needs to get a hold of, and to stop treating games like disposable products.

I don't agree. There's no reason you can't have a second studio remastering things when another develops a new game.

I also think that HD remakes are a great way to get a game out there faster at a lower cost. Without the Uncharted collection, there is no action/adventure game this fall (that I can think of) for PS4. It also helps bridge the gap for the 80% of PS4 owners who never played an Uncharted.

What are they releasing in the next year that isn't a sequel?

Probably something Star Wars for sure.

Nothing wrong with keeping old classics relevant for a new generation. It's only bad if you put a main studio on it and it detracts from new projects.

Shame they didn't run out of whatever ideas they have because I don't give a shit about big majority of their current output (thank god for Star Wars) but would love to catch up on Mass Effect Trilogy on the PS4.

Oh well, no biggie, there are a lot of games to play, just not EA ones.

HD remakes of old-ass games are fine. It's HD remakes of games that game out 2-3 years ago that are dumb.

And don't talk about "running out of ideas" and "pushing forward" EA. We all remember how you guys treat sports games on handhelds.

I think I agree with EA *umph*. It tends to either be out of ideas or needing cash for a next game. Only Nintendo puts lots of efforts into their remasters.

Uncharted Collection is to fund UC4 we know.

343 was working on Halo 5 while making MCC. Naughty Dog helped out on NDC while working on U4.

Calling bullshit here. If he left it at "we just want to make new games" that'd be respectable, but, to imply these studios otherwise have no ideas and are just sitting around doing nothing is shitty.

I think they are mostly right but not exclusively. If they put actual care into a ME Trilogy remaster for example that was 1080p, 60fps, and included all DLC it would do great. Especially if they touched up some of the mechanics.

If a remaster gets actual love put into it then its ok. Whats bad is when no effort is put in like with the Prototype games
