I was looking through my old mags and found this classic.

I still disagree.

EGM went fucking NUTS for Halo. They would not stop talking about how amazing the multiplayer was and they even had a LAN setup. I imagine that was the biggest factor in them picking Xbox.

Shoe especially was a massive Halo fanboy.

Did that guy seriously just call Melee a bad sequel?

Blasphemy.

According to a lot of people at the time, the preview builds for Melee lacked a lot of features that were in the final game, like the trophy unlocks and the more robust single player modes. What they got initially was just basically a prettier version of the original game.

I think EGM even wound up mentioning that in their glowing review of the game the following month.

It's almost as if this magazine predicted the end of that console generation.

Winner is XBox (with the caveat of Resident Evil Exclusive to Gamecube on the cover) ;)

I actually remember this issue, particularly the cover and that corny ass graphic in the final image.

Hsu's comment about Melee still warrants a finger wag. No no, dear, no.

"Waverace and Super Smash Bros melee prove Nintendo sequels aren't always fantastic".

Holy shit. That's a quote that must have haunted him.

My favourite game is Kotor, but I'd still choose the Gamecube. I'd say that was the last generation where it was essential to own all consoles.

Xbox for multiplats, and the Gamecube and PS2 for their incredible exclusives.

I hope someone still has their copy of the following issue, because if I'm not mistaken, Shoe wound up being one of the guys to review Melee and gave it a real high score. I know the game managed to wind up as the GOTM.

That James Mielke knew what was up. GameCube's 2001 holiday lineup was pretty great. It didn't have a Mario 64 or Halo at launch, but I'd take its initial lineup over any other console launch.

Ah, I remember this issue. This just reminds me of how amazing launch lineups were back in the day.

GameCube was for people who wanted to play with monkey balls.

This was my first issue that I received from a sweet two year subscription. I ended up going for the GameCube.

Super Monkey Ball is probably the best under-the-radar launch title ever. No one had any idea what to expect with that game, and it took everyone by surprise.

They actually did a follow up article a year later. I think I still have that EGM. I'll see if I can find it...

That last page was a huge jolt to my memories. I suddenly remembered seeing console "battles" being portrayed like robots with weapons a lot back then. It looks so cheesy now!

anyway, as far as the verdict goes, I can't really agree with it. I can see why people liked the Xbox, but outside a few games (NOT Halo) (mostly Sega games and Ninja Gaiden) there wasn't really much for me at all. And lot of it's other good games were on PC.

On the other hand, the GCN had a lot of games that I loved; Melee, Paper Mario, Wind Waker, RE4, 1080, etc...

Must have meant Mario Sunshine

wasn't a launch game, but I can sure agree with Sunshine being infinitely disappointing.
