Since EGM is no more I've been going through some of my old Buyers Guides which were magazines that EGM put out at the end of each year ie: the 1994 guide came out at the end of 1993 and so forth. If you'd like any of the actual write-up's let me know and I'll add them.

EDIT: Added 1993 thanks to GAFer Coolio McAwesome

Ah, the early 32-bit era was an awkard time.

I think I still have the '94 and '95 buyer's guides laying around here somewhere.

EGM: Twisted Metal 1996 said:
This years battle for the title was a rough one, with a narrow margin between the two contenders: ChronoTrigger and Twisted Metal. When the smoke cleared and the ballots were counted. Twisted Metal came up victorious.

Twisted Metal thrilled nearly everyone in the office. It's a nonstop, action-packed demolition derby created by programmers who were totally bent.

Where else can you control as ice cream truck and run over pedestrians? Each level keeps getting better and better. The editors loved mauling the competition on the roof tops and the small suburban town. The Two-player Mode kept many of us up into the wee hours of the morning, and the thrills never wore off either.

Twisted Metal is simply the best fun we have had in a long time.

EGM: Chrono Trigger 1996 said:
ChronoTrigger won the unanimous vote as he best Super NES game to be released. Square is well known for it's excellent RPG's, and this is its masterpiece. With a gripping plot and terrific graphics, this cart is an adventure of epic porportions.

DKC over Super Metroid is simply sinful

So is Twisted Metal over Chrono Trigger (what the f**k?)

Also, anyone care to enlighten me what besides FF7 and SOTN beat out Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 enough to rank the N64 considerably below the PSX for the full year 1997 (i.e. 1998 buyer's guide)? Was it just the overall lack of games on the N64?

Also, I *think* I have the 92 buyer's guide (for full year 1991) - they rated the Genesis at all 9s, and gave the SNES 7s and 8s - If I remember correctly (big if) - that's a bit flabbergasting - Super Mario World, F-Zero, Super Castlevania 4, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Pilot Wings, SimCity, Final Fight, Gradius III, Super R-Type, Final Fantasy 2, and Actraiser, should have made it more competitive with Genesis.

Also, I think giving the PS2 such high ratings at the end of 2000 (2001 Buyer's Guide) was a joke - there was a total lack of compelling content on the system until many months later. Dreamcast faired far better that year IMHO.

The PS2 has fairly solid launch lineup (SSX, Tekken. TimeSplitters, Madden), but I still fell a bit disappointed with it so far. Maybe it was the incredible hype leading up to October, but for some reason the lack of the really killer must-have titles that follows any system launch seems especially painful for the PS2. It seems like I'm going to have to wait until Metal Gear Solid 2 for a game that does something no other system can come close to. I don't have a DVD player, so just for that reason it's worth it for me (and the backward compatibility is nice), but I'm still waiting for the PS2's Soul Calibur.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 won over Lunar: The Silver Star for RPG of the year in 1993?

That's fucking ridiculous.

That's even worse than Twisted Metal winning over Chrono Trigger! They must have been smoking some serious crack.

EDIT: I think I misunderstood. But even if Secret of Mana won the RPG award over Lunar it's still extremely ridiculous.

I remember buying the 1995 EGM Buyer's Guide from a Bookstar because it had a fuckawesome Mega Man 7 guide in it.

Twisted Metal over Chrono Trigger? Street Fighter II over both Zelda: LTTP AND Secret of Mana in two separate years? Yeah, no thanks.

It's so obvious that EGM just followed whatever the fad was at the time. Look at the scores they gave the SEGA CD in its first year and PS2's rather pathetic first year (don't get me wrong though, it definitely redeemed itself by its second year).

You had to be there.

The first time Twisted Metal came out during the 3D gaming revolution, it was freakin' incredible.

Of course over a decade of 3D later and countless releases and rehashes in the genre would obviously sour something down the line, but the game was rated during the times.

I was there. I remember playing the game for the first time right when it came out in an electronics store, and thinking, "ewww this is one ugly game."

Necrobump anyone?

Seriously though, some of these scores.

Sega CD - 8 / 9 / 8 / 8 in 1992
Amiga CD - 7 / 8 / 8 / 8 in 1993
Sega 32X - 8 / 7 / 8 / 8 in 1994

I feel bad for the kids who were fooled by EGM into buying one of these systems.

Various typos aside, this is certainly a fun read and I like their sense of humour.

Thanks for the bump. Some threads deserve to be seen again.
