(Reuters) - Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elon Musk's net worth topped $100 billion on Friday, according to the Forbes real-time billionaires list, as the shares of electric-car maker Tesla Inc see a more than five-fold surge in value this year.

A large chunk of his wealth comes from the 21% stake in Tesla, according to Forbes. Tesla shares, which went public at $17 a piece in 2010, rose as much as 3.5% in morning trade to a record high of $2,318.49.

The company became the world's most valuable carmaker by market capitalization on July 1 when it overtook front runner Toyota Motor Corp and has over the last 10 years made many of its retail investors millionaires.

Musk is now part of an elite club of just four others with twelve digit net worth. His nearly $100 billion, however, is just about half the net worth of the world's richest man and Amazon.com Inc CEO Jeff Bezos, according to Forbes.

Musk, who co-founded and sold Internet payments company PayPal Holdings Inc, now leads some of the most futuristic companies in the world.

Besides Tesla, he heads rocket company SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup that is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect the human brain to computers.

He set up the Boring Company to make affordable tunnels below busy city streets to for an all-electric public transportation system to avoid the nasty traffic jams in U.S. cities.

Crazy especially since he was telling that story at e3 of his past where had zero money and was sleeping on a friends couch after blowing all his PayPal money and before the successful launch of space x

The man is doing more for the environment, and mankind than any other. Good to see him being in control of so much capital. His next venture will be another crucial advancement that will benefit all of us.

Edited the first commend for clarity. He made all of that money helping to create PayPal. Blew all of it on Space X. The first couple of rockets were failures and he was saying he had like no money and if the next rocket ship failed he would have to change his career. But then it went well now he has Space X and Tesla and has 100 billion woot woot

Wonderful!
Well-deserved!
Congrats!

To the best of my knowledge, he's reaping the rewards of his work ethic, proving once again that under capitalism the combination of vision, talent, persistence and hard work usually pays off.

Brace yourselves, though, for the usual attempt to vilify billionaires. The "oppressor", Elon, must have waged "oppression" - that forever undefined term - against millions of "oppressed" fellow men, preferably with minority backgrounds, in order to Uncle Scrooge every penny out of their miserable "oppressed" existence.

When asked to finally, at long last, define oppression objectively, watch them blush like a schoolgirl. At least Marxism was monumentally wrong, but serious. I wouldn't harbour the latter expectation with regard to most of the current mainstream left.

Look at this. Just disgusting.

How much do you want to tax him TaySan TaySan ? Tell us how Elon Musk isn't paying his fair share
At least more than the working class.

I don't think anyone should ever have that much wealth and power. Even if he lost 99% of that he would still be better off than just about everybody in the world and still live a comfortable life for the rest of his days.

Exciting to have a billionaire who actually makes things that work. Tesla revolutionizing the electric car industry and spacex doing the same to space. These are massive leaps forward and yet people can’t celebrate because they are filled with jealousy.

There it is.

The man could build rockets to send us to Mars, fund a project that helps people with spinal injury and expand their brain capabilities, do god knows how much good for the world, all the socialists care about is their fucking tax bill. How high is it? Answer: not enough

We have a generation of young liberals that are barely above parasites. 🙄

Oh Def it was amazing the guy is a super genius. He was talking about how he used to make video games and that’s what he would probably be doing if he wasn’t doing this. Thats why I never understand when people say E3’s not awesome anymore. You get to go and see all these great panels and free drinks after lol.

There aren't many people that do enough to really make you feel the difference they are making in the world. Neuralink and SpaceX will probably be the most significant efforts for mankind that we'll witness during our lifetime.

I don't think anyone should ever have that much wealth and power.

Yes, and all of the sudden Life itself must comply with TaySan's fabled wisdom.

People must live according, not to their values, goodness no, that's unthinkable, but to TaySan's. Living according to one's own values while not violating other people's rights?! TaySan can't have that. Please submit willingly, or forcibly, to TaySan's code of conduct, that , in the recent past, has included injunctions to burn down Trump Tower, among other pearls of precious teenage sageness.

Even if he lost 99% of that he would still be better off than just about everybody in the world and still live a comfortable life for the rest of his days.

It's not your wealth. It's his wealth. He's already paid taxes. It's his alone. If he wants to, he can burn it in the chimney, he can smoke it like a joint, give it to charity, spent it on coke and hookers, or build yet another business that propels mankind forward, in an ever so slightly more relevant contribution to the well-being of the world population than that of the cashier at Wendy's with which you're trying to compare him.

Elon puts in the vision and the work, he gets the rewards.
It's simple.

If TaySan thinks he's entitled to manage Elon's wealth, does B-universe get to manage TaySan's wealth as well? But why not?

I just thought this. Half of your income, dear TaySan, will be going to a fund I just set up. I think I'm more qualified to manage that modest fraction of your bank account than you are, just like you think you're more qualified to decide where Elon's dough ought to end up in than Elon himself.

Please PM your details.

Serious question: Do you have any capability of critical thinking whatsoever? Like, do you ever evaluate things, think about them for yourself, or do you only repeat whatever it is you read on Resetera that day?

Believe it or not i do and I don't always agree with Era's consensus on everything. Matter of fact today i had a big disagreement over whether sex workers deserved to be paid for their work and my opinion was the unpopular one.

Careful you'll get punished for disagreeing on Era. The moment you slip up your ban will be 10x the usual due to your refusal to conform.

And don't even think about making another account because they know your location.

This guy would be nothing without the talented engineers/software devs who work at Tesla. He is a suit. Nothing more. A vulture who flies over academic circles looking for the latest talent.

There is nothing wrong with that of course. That's how you make billions but I wish we would hear more about the lead engineers who come up with the ideas instead of this moron.

I got the feeling he's the only dude alive that wants to push humanity forwards instead of moving backwards.

Absolutely 100% earned.

lol shut up. the company would be nothing because he founded it. anytime we hear news about him he is made out like he is Tony Stark designing shit in his basement. You think he gets his hands dirty in designing, manufacting and testing? I know someone who worked at spacex. He oversees the projects and has some technical input but he doesn't actually work in engineering.
