Rating: CERO D

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa (雛見沢?) (based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu, a World Heritage Site), which has a population of approximately 2,000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjou. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

Arkham city is a bustling hub of commerce and industry, however Arkham is also a center of eldrich lore: home to Miskatonic University, an institution of higher learning with one of the most complete libraries of arcane literature in the world. In the span of two generations the town was built up to the status of prestige it now commands, an expansion helmed by the Hadou Group, an industrial complex and family dynasty currently run by the young Hadou Ruri. She pursues the peace and prosperity of Arkham diligently, against the forces of darkness threatening to plunge the city, and the world, back into a second dark age. Among the most sinister threats to Arkham City is the evil Black Lodge syndicate. Led by the charismatic Master Therion, his nihilistic outlook shapes the group's destructive goals: with a circle of powerful sorcerers at his command, the potential for sowing chaos in the city is unmatched.

Former Miskatonic University Magic Academy student Daijuuji Kurou knows little of grimoires, but what he does know terrifies him - enough that he left his university life behind, and now practices a failing detective business in the shelter of an orphanage in a quiet corner of Arkham. But just when he thought his Academy past was buried, it catches up with him and pulls him back into the dark shadows of the occult: Hadou Ruri herself appears at his door with an offer he can't refuse. The only way to combat the Black Lodge's growing magical power is to find, and retrieve, a grimoire with the power to activate the mightiest Machina of all: Demonbane. This story takes place in an alternative future of Shanghai where money and power rules the city. Mafia groups hire Kung Fu masters and dominate the society.

There are two types of Kung Fu masters, those who mastered their internal qi, and those who mastered their physical skills. The qi masters are able to output a stronger energy coming from their life itself, but it took a long time to master it. It was easier to just train their physical skills, but there was a limit to how strong a human body can be. So there were a balance of many average physical skill masters and few strong qi masters. However that balance broke when cybernetics came into play. Kung Fu masters would replace their body with robotic parts and attain a strength that a normal human can never achieve. That's how no one tried to become qi masters anymore when they can easily become powerful by using cybernetics, and qi masters decreased in numbers.

The main character of the story Kong Taoluo, a qi master, used to be the top assassin of the leading mafia group. He was betrayed and killed, or at least he was supposed to be, but now he returns to city of Shanghai for revenge and for his sister...

I really enjoy the idea of visual novels, but its a shame that most of the ones in the OP outside of 999 and Ever17 seem to revolve around various antics with anime girls. I hope one day we can get some more interactive experiences that really are novel quality.

Hm...I like the sound of Umineko no Naku Koro ni though. Its being fan translated, I wonder how much I can track it down for...

Well the thread isn't done yet there are tons of titles to put up still although that'd likely take a lot longer to put together. Although you shouldn't discount something because of a predominately female cast there is some genuinely interesting things amongst what looks to be more of the same.

You can get Umineko 1-4 for less than a current gen game! Let me find it for you.

There is a very extensive list on vndb, not linking there cause im sure it breaks the rules of GAF somehow.

Oh my god, it's my favorite genre in the world!

I played Tsukihime (and Kagetsu Tohya) long before there was even a hint of a translation patch, and my Japanese isn't actually good enough to read them. The method I used for playing was, looking back on it now, retarded. I'm very glad for translations, even if they're still relatively few and far between :p

I'll have to look into more of the officially translated ones that I've not played already.

Oh yeah, the anime girl thing isn't so much a comment on quality so much as that I've never really felt engaged with "anime lifestyle storylines" about students going to school and living moderately wacky lives.

I notice also that a lot of visual novels that aren't of that style use the "group of people trapped/confined to one area" setup for the story, which gets me speculating about how doing so allows them to map out the players possible choices with any degree of practicality. It helps with the suspension of disbelief at the necessarily limited options for movement.

Isn't Phoenix Wright really more of an adventure game? I mean, you go around, look at stuff, pick up items, etc.

What really separates an adventure game from a visual novel? Just coming from Japan?

I'd say PW is borderline. Phoenix Wright has, by my estimation, a lot more dialogue then something like Monkey Island or Sam & Max, and 999 has waaay more then even that.

Yeah, you're probably I meant to put ADV in the thread title as well but I guess I forgot. xD;

Can a mod change it to "English Translated Japanese Visual Novel/ADV Thread"?

AA is actually very western in that aspect, I don't recall another japanese graphic adventure game since 2000 that has more investigation/puzzle solving than AA (besides 999, but that's other genre I guess?) Still, AA has a lot of reading than the average western graphic adventure.

The main difference between Visual Novels and Graphic Adventures games, IMO, is how much puzzle solving is around the storyline.

I actually totally agree with you, but the lines are pretty well blurred by games like 999. AA games don't have the long length story and dialogue scenes that 999 does, which is where I really draw the line.

What a lovely thread! This genre needs all the English love it can get. I assume you'll list it eventually, but you'll want to list Narcissu as the most prominent freeware VN. Also, it'd be a good idea to list older fan-translated console games, like Portopia Serial Murder Case (NES), Radical Dreamers (SNES), and Policenauts (PSX). There aren't too many of those, but a couple are of really good quality.

The line between visual novels and Japanese adventure games is blurry for us in the West because even the more interactive ADVs like Phoenix Wright are much more talky than Western adventure games. If you want to be technical, visual novels are solely narrative-focused games with no gameplay outside branching narratives (Ever17, Clannad) while ADVs have some other form of gameplay (the courtrooms in Phoenix Wright or the puzzle rooms in 999). There's no need to get technical though.

Great thread!

I'm with PataHikari. So far I've played the most typical trio, Ace Attorney, 999, and Ghost Trick (last one's debatable)

Good thread, I've read a bit of Fate/Stay Night (about 9 hours worth) and Umineko (2 hours at least). I really need to get around to finishing them.

I have finished 999 and all the Phoenix wright games though!

My japanese graphic adventure recommendations would be both Hideo Kojima's Snatcher and Policenauts. While both games have a lot of movies pastiches, the game themselves have enough puzzling/story-driven aspects that are fun. Both games have great characters, top-notch localizations and voice acting, as well.

Policenauts' research and justification is VERY impressive considering the age where it was conceived, too. This game in particular is definitely one of the best Kojima's games.

Good thread. I've heard of most of those already, but more info about them's always cool.

This has always been one of those genres that I've been really interested in and I've been telling myself I'll get into, but I've never got around to it. Hopefully when I have more time this summer.

Alright guys saved the titles you've recommended to add! If you'd like to recommend anymore though send a PM so it doesn't clutter the thread so off to compiling logos, screens, and game information!

Oooh great thread. Yeah VNDB is a really great site for visual novels and it lists all the current ones available in English.

I'm still playing through Fate/Stay Night UBW. I've been playing it for around a year now 0_o

I just find it hard to get motivation to play it.

EDIT: I'd recommend Clannad or Planetarian. Good stories that aren't full of H. Also Fate/Stay Night I guess but is there a patch to remove the H scenes? If so use it. Terrible terrible scenes.

Great thread! Making my way through Ever17 now. After that, whatever catches my interest. Need to find more disturbing stuff like Saya no Uta.

Are you playing Ever17 in English? If you are, where'd you manage to find a copy? Last time I went looking for it, the only second-hand copies I was turning up were listed for like, $200! That's a tad out of my price range! By, like, four times the max.

Good question. I want to play Ever 17 as well, but $200 seems cruel and unusual.

Wow, you're right it is $200, holy hell. The Japanese version is really cheap in comparison, totally worth learning Japanese for lol.

Oh yes. Although the pedestrians had they share of Policenauts before in MGS when Otacon starts talking about anime. :p

Man, both Policenauts and Snatcher had great soundtracks, by the way.

Borrowed it from a college friend. The guy was actually complaining about 999 being a watered down Ever17.

But
according to TVtropes and a number of other sources the story won't make sense without the sex scenes

Higurashi (the anime) impressed me. Only watched the first season, should try the VN sometime.

The anime was decent, but the VN is much better and more effective, despite the haphazard translation from MangaGamer. I highly recommend it.

And Umineko no Naku Koro ni - anyone who has not played this yet needs to try it. Right. Now.
