[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

yeah sounds like bs. Sounds like complex mess, not what rumors are suggesting that sony is going for more simple off the shelf parts machine. this sounds like some over enginered mess that will cost a lot of money to make.
Sounds like Sony then!

I kid. I kid... that is unless is suddenly 2005/2006 again!

Sounds horrible, but thanks for sharing. Just to be clear in case you don't know. Lying about this things will give you a ban
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I've waited quite a long time :D And thanks for the the ban tip. Like I said I'm not saying this is fact, just going by what I've been told by someone who has told me things in the past about Sony that have come true. But I won't relay many things anymore, especially if it's completely opposite of what everyone else is saying. I can see how that can be total BS.

He said a Super Companion Chip is: Cell's peripheral LSI, which houses audo and image interfaces supporting high-speed data transfer capability. The chip also supports a group of interfaces for various systems (video, audio input/output, digital AV interface, IEEE1394, digital tuner interface) and a group of interfaces that make it easier to connect standard input/output devices (standard bus interface, high speed network interface and storage device interface.) It's made by Toshiba.

Also the leaks I showed him weren't the DF one, it was the VG247 leak from the other day.

i'm calling it now (again).

Xbox720 will give players the possibility of setting up their own channel and show themselves playing games.

Still doesn't justify reserving that ridiculous amount of ram and cores. I understand capturing and encoding streams can be tasking but i'm sure that figure (assuming it's real) is just for devkits

What the hell has happened to this thread... Members are debating the merits of Sony's first party studios, arguing over last gen's technical achievements, and beating each other senselessly with PC hardware comparisons. Please drop this veiled fanboyism, both systems have merits worth applauding, but you will get yourself no where if you keep insisting on playing a veiled Gamefaqs carousel.

that would be out of control crazy ...it would be like Microsoft own version of twitch.tv (which would be incredible)

There are a couple of guys on this forum that know a lot but are not saying anything. which leads me to believe most of rumors could be misleading us from real facts. Or there is a bit of true in all of them.
Well if they're under NDA and have their job on the line, it's pretty normal they won't say anything, regardless of how true are the rumors.
Being in contact with industry insiders working on Durango, i have some infos, but they're not very accurate, and concerns only the devkits. Anyway, what I heard of is in line with the latest rumors anyway.

I think it's more likely it will reserve a fraction of the power of 1 core for that, meaning all 8 cores will be available for games.
How does one Jaguar compare to Cell's PPE for general performance ?
I assume it's at least equal ?
If so, yeah maybe doesn't need an entire CPU to itself as long as the OS is lightweight and not trying to do too much. It seems like it could afford to spare 1 though, with all of the co-processors it seems to have onboard.

Hey folks. Just got approved and this is my first post!

I hate to be that "guy" that brings more "insider information" to the table(especially since it's my first post and nobody knows if I'm trustworthy), but I will be for right now. I have a friend who is very, very close with Sony. I won't say what he does or who he is, but I can relay what he has told me.

I haven't kept up on this page completely so hopefully I'm bringing some new information. I showed him the rumored leaks from yesterday and he said the only thing they really got right was the RAM. According to him(I don't know tech talk very well so you might understand this better than I) the APU has 4 steamroller cores in it, bandwidth to the GDDR5 is high. Cell runs the show(OS, security, IO, etc.) and also acts as a satellite/accelerator processor for the steamroller cores. APU has access to the XDR in a similar way that RSX does. There is an SCC(Super Companion Chip) inside as well.

The ram is only 3.5gb and is in 3 pools. 2GB GDDR5 for the APU(which is not an A10), 1GB DDR3 for the SCC, and 512mb XDR(for Cell). He said the APU has 256GB/s to the GDDR5, devkits though. There is no cell in the devkit yet, maybe 1st party ones, cell integration needs final silicon.

It will be backwards compatible with PS3 AND PS2. As far as the new controller rumor, he doesn't know much as far as design goes but did say that there is no screen on the controller, however, you can use another device to have that. I assume he's hinting at the vita?

Anyways, that's the info I received. No need to believe it and I'm not saying it is 100% accurate, just going by what I've been told.
Dude your "friend" is pulling your leg. No way there are 3 types of RAM in the PS4.

WTF is this shit. Do you understand economies of scale? The very idea that Sony is sourcing three vendors for three types of RAM would make this probably the most ill-engineered worthless POS. You need new friends.

Each of these cores only have 1 hardware thread, correct? If what you say is the case, they would have to rely on the game developers to leave some CPU time for OS functions. The PS3 currently reserves an SPE for the OS, I don't see why they would change that for the PS4.

i'm calling it now (again).

Xbox720 will give players the possibility of setting up their own channel and show themselves playing games.
Well i don't really see how that would be appealing to the general audience.
That would be cool of course, but i don't think it's really worth it marketing wise. I'm no Microsoft though.

Honestly, I'm of the opinion that at this point if your info is like 1 year or almost 1 year old, it probably will only give you some accurate info.

We need people that know what's the situation as of last month, or this month. Problem is, it's coming to a point where we have a bunch of old info and speculation being thrown together and being taken as something that is 90% there, when it probably isn't.

New people coming out of the woodwork that have inside info just....turns things into a blurry mess after awhile.

So I didn't see you mention anything about the 1.84TF GPU? Did your source have anything to say about that?

This sort of fits with those design patents Sony filed, which shows a dualshock which 'snaps in half' then suddenly gets a screen in between.

Fuck.

I agree, except for the without focus part. I think it will be focused, and these dedicated ram and cpu cores to OS rumors paint a pretty obvious picture of their continued focus on Kinect, apps, casual, media and ads ads ads. Kinect 2.0 is coming with EVERY 720, I will bet all kinds of money on it and thats part of where the ram and cpu is going with whatever new shit they are doing with it. I have a couple friends that are going to be all kinds of excited for it but it turns me right off. If I do jump into next gen my only hope is PS4 doesn't go that route and keeps their OS clean, tight and useful like XMB or even Vita bubbles (which may be a possibility since we haven't seen the PS4 controller yet).
I think the big question is if they will manage to find the right focus on their target audiences. Will the hardcores eat it up the same way they did with the 360? Will the casuals be interested in the new Kinect or is the old one enough?

Fun times ahead.

B E L I E V E

in backwards compatibility.

No he didn't mention anything about the GPU at all.

I'm going to cool down on what he's been telling me, hahahah. Like I said, I'm no techie and I have no understanding of what he's telling me. Maybe he is pulling my leg. I don't want to get banned after wanting to be on here for so long. So for the time being I'll stick to what I know :)

Didn't mean to stir things up so much! Forgive me!

I will do this one more time-

THIS DOCUMENT IS REAL. I can vouch for it myself.

http://www.vgleaks.com/world-exclusive-ps4-in-deep-first-specs/

It was made in early 2012. These were Sony's target specs at that time. Digital Foundry has newer information, and I highly doubt they would risk their credibility to spread bullshit rumors from the internet.

Anyone who says any thing different is full of shit.
>DirectX 11.5

Yeah okay.

>DirectX 11.5

Yeah okay.
You don't need to believe me, but the moment I found it was real, I changed my entire posting habits. Aurhur outed the RAM numbers, I was the person who revealed the speed of Durango's RAM, so I'm sure you will love to pretend I know nothing. Have some faith in me GAF -_-, I have been parroting the specs in the OP for a while now.

BLAH BLAH BLAH <insert some nonsense> BLAH BLAH BLAH

Anyways, that's the info I received. No need to believe it and I'm not saying it is 100% accurate, just going by what I've been told.
Sorry sir, but that's just not believable. In fact it's downright absurd.

Well, if you just came out and posted what your source told you instead of cherry picking parts, then you would have your hat thrown in the ring and pretty soon we would see if you were right.

I can understand the doubts.

Actually, it kinda makes sense in a strange kind of way.

It's the first time we've heard of BC.

And the 2gb thing is what Devs have been complaining about for a while now.

edit: Also the first time we're hearing about security.

But aren't theses info over a year old according to the article? If so, there is room for changes i think.

To be fair the original PS3 had 3 types of RAM. There is a precedence for it.

Not saying its likely though ;-)

Giggzy, as weird as your info sounds, it might be the only way Sony can get PS3 backwards compatibility.

I rather have a great hardware than Sony gimping the console to get backwards compatibility, so I hope your info is false. Waste of money, time and resource.

Doubt all you want. I stand by the specs in the OP with a few alterations. I also stand by 1.23 TF for Durango, with 8 GB of RAM DDR3 + 32 mb ES RAM.

Even a DX 11.5 equivalent GPU is a hard thing to sell. I don't think many people have much confidence in what you have to say seeing as you changed your whole teraflop argument recently. I'm not calling you a fraud, as we WILL be seeing if you are indeed correct soon, so don't act so shocked when someone challenges what you've said.

Is it ironic that VG leaks, VG247, and Digital Foundry all have essentially the same information? However, some junior member with zero credibility posts a diatribe about the most convoluted, expensive, and complex architecture - we suddenly take it seriously?

I understand, but you also could say what's wrong/right about the O.P. And tell us the rest, like what's the difference between Durango's GPU and Orbis GPU aside from the TFLOP numbers? What's the "special sauce" in both of them?

Is the info about OS reserves on both machines new or old info?

Playing cat and mouse is only fun when it's made by the people who apparently know everything but never put out much information at all. Because they probably have something to lose by doing it?

You stand by the ESRAM and the TFLOPS and RAM, I get it. Why not spill the rest then?
