Europe =/= UK. Both hardware and software are MUCH lower for the 360 in mainland europe, which accounts for more or less 70% of european sales.

The 3 systems are very close in EU. People always like to pretend they are not based on their local situation in Europe, but the EU is the closest market for all the console makers. In a way it is logical, since we are such a mix of different cultures. Some prefer 360, some Wii, some PC and some PS3.

That's so 2005. Europe became Nintendoland in 2006, and this is basically leveling out again from Nintendo dominance, not Sony dominance.


Except Portugal and Ireland, those never left the Sony ship. But this is UK/GER/FRA/SPA anyway.

Germany+Spain is roughly equivalent to the UK, and bigger than France. Seems about right.

I don't know... something just seemed off on them vs the last time we got those sorts of figures. Was just a feeling rather than something tangible.

i dont think that is true though - they shouldnt make more than 60%-65% of EMEA sales?

The last time we got the figures we were told (revenue based)...

Sweden	 2.67%
Belgium	 2.49%
Portugal 1.25%
Norway   0.49%
Based on that, the top group would account for 81%. There are other countries in Europe obviously, but they make up fractions of a percent.

I don't think we ever got data for full years. Nintendo has published this kind of slide before, but they always stopped at September.

The 360 is much closer than i would have expected. If the numbers are that close then i can't see Europe + Japan even nearly making up the difference if the 360 keeps a similar pace in the US.

I think Nintendo used tto include Italy in their charts. It's a shame they don't anymore. I'm also kind of surprised Italy is a smaller market than Spain. Italy has bigger population and is richer.

Dunno, considering that countries like Belgium or Sweden make up ~2.5% in this case, while Norway only 0.5 (with ~half the population of Belgium and Sweden respectively), makes it hard to guess how important all the other countries are.
If Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and Denmark are all like Sweden/Belgium in terms of per capita videogame sales, than that's pretty much another Italy-like market in terms of size.

I made an estimation of those countries based on their reported revenue / population sizes / average ages / GDP etc (there's a thread on it somewhere around here) and even if you include every single EU country (going as far as ones like Moldova and Georgia), those top four still end up making up around 65% of the total revenue.

Wow. I thought the PS3 had sold quite a bit more than the 360 last year worldwide. I've got nothing concrete to base that assumption on, it was just a feeling.

I think it's the result of people like Redbeard shouting in every thread that PS3 is ouselling 360 in Europe 20:1 despite having any access to hard data.

Or maybe it's the fact that Sony routinely ships more consoles than MS? Through this first 3 quarters of this calendar year, Sony shipped 8.1M PS3s, and MS shipped 5.8M 360s. In the fourth quarter, MS shipped 6.3M 360s. So either Sony had their worst CY4Q since launch, and they're going to miss their forecast by a ton, or they will have outshipped MS this year. Chances are, Sony outshipped MS by a couple of million units.

I have no idea how to explain the discrepancy (Sony has a bigger or deeper channel maybe?), but it definitely exists.

Probably it's because the videogame cuture in Italy is underdeveloped compared to its potential.
Try to name an italian-based developer, chances is that no one that isn't a italian can do it while the same can't be said about UK,France, Germany and even Spain.
