Fable Hasn't Even Hired a Lead Writer or Game Designer Yet

Fable doesn't seem poised to launch on Xbox Series X or PC any time soon based on current openings at Playground Games.
At long last, Microsoft revealed a few weeks back that the reboot of the Fable franchise is officially in the works at Playground Games. While the project has been rumored for years at this point, this was the first revelation directly from the publisher that fans would soon be able to return to the world of Albion. However, if you had any inclination that the forthcoming Fable game would be arriving soon, you might want to dash those hopes.

If you take a cursory glance over at Playground’s careers page on the studio’s official website, you’ll see that the developer still looks to be staffing up quite a bit. And not only are there a lot of active positions to be filled on Playground’s Fable team, but the roles that are currently being hired for look to be quite important.

Of the vital jobs that are currently open, Playground is still looking to add a Lead Audio Engineer, Lead AI Engineer, Lead Game Designer, Animation Director, and a Lead Scriptwriter to the team. These positions are just a few of the nearly 40 that are currently available at Playground right this moment.

Well at least it hasn't been delayed or cancelled yet, right?
We should all totally get an XSX this year and subscribe up to gamepass on the off-chance this sees the light of day in the next 5 years. Isn't that the line the xbox astro-turfers are supposed to push?
Now where's my money Redmond?

says GAF is a racist board but still wants to be a part of it...
I think this is going to be the case for many first party games - Microsoft or Sony - so I wouldn't even expect many Next Gen first party titles in 2021. For example, I doubt Horizon 2 is coming out next year.

seems at a similar point to Avowed, State of Decay 3 and that Rare game. can't believe after all those purchases how far away everything is.

still, the rumour about this game being in development has been going on well over a year already, at least it feels that way. would have thought they would have these positions sorted already

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
It wasn't the only MS game tha wasn't ready for primetime yet. Rare was still wondering what the gameplay loop in their new game should be. And that Obsidian game also looked like all had so far was the name.

Aside from the fact that yes, the game is likely not coming soon (but no one said it would), this kind of speculation from career opportunity ads is super-shaky and potentially very misleading.

Contrary to popular belief, this kind of position being hired DURING development is very common, and in big teams having multiple leads for the same discipline is not uncommon.

While this article tries to make it look like development has just started, is in early production, or hasn't started yet, that's simply clickbait. Nothing in those career ads actually indicates that in any solid way.

A lot of these ads have been there for over a year if not close to two (as per webarchive). They simply added the name Fable, which is normal since now the game has been revealed. Big dev studios hire for this kind of position all the way through development.

The Last Guardian says hello. Delays happen, development takes time. You think Naughty Dog has PS5 game just sitting on the back burner ready to come out next year?

They didn't even show any PS5 game teaser yet. TLoU2 Factions is going to be cross-gen though (and possibly cross-platform with PC).

Note the source. Dualshockers. It’s borderline FUD, and unfortunately people are buying it.

This is a whole bunch of nothing. If you think this is bad news, you can't know much about how games are made.

So they featured a game during their spotlight that DOESN’T HAVE ANYONE WORKING ON IT YET?

Joke post, right? Or do you believe all those people they've publicly communicated hiring for this very team over the past couple of years are just sitting on the floor twiddling their thumbs while they wait for a few lead positions to be filled?

It’s a narrative based RPG... and it doesn’t have a lead writer yet.

You picked polar opposite examples. From the time The Last Guardian was announced until it was released, Naughty Dog announced and RELEASED Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, Left Behind and Uncharted 4.

Well, while you're explaining to us how games are made, maybe you should explain it to Microsoft too. They could use your help.

No. I’m not. Nothing could have been done on this game yet.

How can any work have been done on a narrative RPG when all of these positions are yet to be filled?

What about the plethora of people already employed? Have they spend two years doing nothing?

go troll somewhere else.

Whew, Insomniac is in trouble. No lead level designer.

Oh my god. Just take a breath, and go look at the job advertisements. All of them state how early this game is in development. Nothing much could have been done on it.

I’m not posting here again, because it’s a hiding to nothing, but the adverts speak for themselves. This game has had nothing done on it yet. It’s YEARS away.
