A woman's life shouldn't have to be about "getting by", it should be about having a DECENT good-paying and satisfying job. Most if not all of the men at that party have jobs like that. I am helping to spread awareness of this mistreatment of a gender by a company of developers that a lot of people hold dear; surely I'm not a white knight, I'm just saying.

After learning this is some Skrillex club thing, strippers or escorts being hired to entertain at the party isn't too strange. I originally thought escorts were lounging around a small area hitting on random designers and occupants.

The problem is not the people who were hired, it's that because there is a large proportion of male guests that organisers feel compelled to balance the gender bias by hiring female eye candy.

This of course isn't going to make female guests feel at all welcome, when you have a large group of makes drooling over and sexualising females.

This is just the latest in a string of misogynistic behaviour by the games industry.

Regardless of whether it happens elsewhere is irrelevant.

same thing happened at seattle for the party there. id say it was a 70/30 split on random raver kids to pax people. sure it is cool that you throw a party, but why even do it at an event (pax, gdc) if you are just going to let random locals in? why not just throw it anytime?

whole thing was silly. ended up going back to the microsoft party and drank their free booze.

i personally could careless about the paid people to attend. that is typical club behavior and promoter type stuff. really that probably isn't mojang paying that first hand. they paid the promoter to book the venue, the event planner probably reached out to places to get 'sexy' people to mingle. typical stuff.

you are complaining about stripping/escorting as a profession, the company of developers isnt "mistreating" shit. They are paying women to do the job they want to do.

Maybe not, maybe it was quite unintentional. Though I'd have to see what kind of party this was and what kind of dancers they were to really say...

I'm not a woman, I'm just saying that I can imagine these sorts of setups might be uncomfortable or send the wrong message to female participants in the industry. The degree of discomfort probably varying with what kind of party and what kind of dancers were involved. I'm guessing different women have different views on that.

News flash: many parties that are non-video game related pay women to attend, have drinks and look pretty. It's called promo or model work, shit happens in Vegas all the fucking time. I hate generalizing, but a sizable portion of people who are into gaming enough to frequent a forum such as this one probably don't know enough about social engagements where this happens and therefore it seems like something completely alien to them and then if their first knowledge of such a thing occurs in a video game industry function I guess with the current Internet climate of sensitivity to sexism I could see how such a person would be shocked at this practice. These women who do this promotional model work are more than happy to take the money and free drinks to just show up to a party. They don't need people white knighting for them. I don't know why a woman should feel less safe at a video game business function than any other one. Straight men are attracted to women and since men are generally more visual than women, they focus on a woman's appearance. This isn't "objectification", its attraction. It's not a bad thing for fuck's sake.

I imagine if you said this to the faces of those women (who may have degrees or be working towards them, who knows - it is not like a college degree will net you a $300/hour job dancing and talking at a party) they would not be too pleased with you. It may even be the cases they do not see themselves as damsels in distress. It is extremely condescending in a humorous way.

That aside, unless I'm understanding this all wrong, I don't really see this as an official videogame industry event which can reflect a business's practices. GDC and other conventions have after-parties for people to socialize outside the context of videogames. Good for them, that's their time to relax. From the sound of it Notch just likes using his fortune to throwing shitty dubstep rave parties, videogames be damned.

Not on this topic, but just a general idea of women dancers and such.

Does everything in life have to be intellectually stimulating? Not everyone likes going to university. They might find it extremely boring and want to do something else that stimulates another part of them . And it's not like they don't do anything. They go to the gyms and keep fit, making sure they stay in top shape. Some are even married and have kids. If they like doing that and it's not illegal, why stop them?

If forced into it, then yeah, I agree it is wrong, but if they want to do that because they enjoy doing it, I certainly don't have the right to stop them and I am happy that I don't, because that's just one step towards throwing your own vision of the world into someone's mind.

Look, the reality is this line of work isn't going to help your last 30's/early 40's. Then what are these people supposed to do with their lives? Just marry a rich man and perpetuate another stereotype about women? We should be helping women get better jobs and have better lives.

Maybe the ratio of women liking it is less than men? Does that still mean it is wrong to do it as a job? I've seen plenty of women go to parties with male strippers.

Just because there is less of it, doesn't mean it's suddenly wrong.


33% of religious people are Christians, so the 7% that go the route of Buddhism, are they suddenly wrong, because there are less of them?

I'm not religious by the way, just using an extreme idea.

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. Unlike the IGDA industry event, Mojang threw a private party where they hired attractive women and hostesses to serve and interact with guests.

There is nothing inherently sexist about this, and I'm shocked people are actually up in arms over this.

Have any of you been to any parties besides house parties or friend gatherings? When I was working at Best Buy, our store was the best in the division. Corporate threw a private party at a hall, where everyone in the store was invited. Attractive women were hired both to dance, serve food, and socialize. Our store was primarily 65% women staff. No one once said they were awkward with the situation.

I actually want an honest debate about this. Have you ever been to clubs downtown? Why should a private party be any different? This wasn't a professional gathering or advocacy group. Even Hollywood and almost every major industry hires hostesses and servers or attractive bartenders for parties.

And if they don't want that? This is the point I am getting at. Not everyone wants to go and study and you can't force them to. Sure, it be nice, but reality is that not everyone wants to study.
