Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

I don't, that's a false characterization of what I'm saying. I was just responding to someone who asked why a person would want to do that, and you're arguing that shows an unreasonable work ethic or something along those lines.
Thats not what I was saying, either. My point was that there would probably be plenty of people that weren't there to just talk about work, in which case the presence of some paid socialites wouldn't hurt a thing.

Because you don't even know what you're arguing, and I'm trying to tie the ends together to show how silly the divergent arguments are.
I know what I'm arguing, but maybe got the wrong impression of what you were trying to say/do(which I'm still not 100% on)? You seemed to be taking the 'girls shouldn't be there, its a work-focused event' stance.

I apologize if I've gotten that wrong somehow.

You do know LOTS of clubs will hire girls to come in if they feel the balance is skewed too far into the man territory right? It's not lame and it's only embarrassing if you're feeling that way due to your own insecurities.

Wow, some of you act like you've never been to a rave/party or heard of clubs padding their dance floors with dancers to liven up the place, raise the energy level a bit.

I'm not saying this is uncommon, and that has nothing to do with me not liking these methods.
Hire dancers to dance at your club because no one is coming? Yeah I can't see how that is not lame.
And I'm even a party guy, just not a club guy(concerts, bar, festivals).

And i'm very comfortable in my relations with women, thanks.

I guess my problem with this is how Minecraft only gets barebone updates every couple of months - if we're lucky, and yet they're paying strippers 300/hr. to pretend to be interested in their conversations?

What about all the things that the devs have promised would be integrated into MC that've been pushed back and pushed back and put on indefinite hold?

And then Notch moves onto Scrolls and his Space Sim Programming game 0x000 or something like that?

I'm starting to get the feeling that Notch got really lucky and became a millionaire on just the Alpha version of Minecraft, so now he's going to just keep starting projects, gathering money for them, and then "moving on" and dumping a B or C team in as soon as they hit a bare minimum of playability.

Who said they were strippers? Ever hear of a go-go dancer?

To the rest of the thread.

Seriously some of you are overly sensitive about stupidest shit.

It seems like people are getting pre-emptively outraged at the outrage they expect to happen due to drawing a false equivalence to the IGDA thing.

Did the twitter poster bfod ever come out and explain what exactly he didn't like about the gender situation? I'm trying to dig through it now but not seeing anything currently.

edit: A retweet by bfod showed that someone else mentioned it was "creepy." However, it's unclear if the girls themselves were creepy, creepy that girls were paid for, or just being around girls in general.

It seems the abundance of articles and outlets running stories/information about the plight of women in the gaming industry (which is very serious mind you) has led to a unwarranted correlation here. It seems like some people's outrage is misdirected because this is, coincidentally, being put on by people that are related to gaming.

It's a shame, my bros band opened for Justice at the party, and the news coming out was about this instead of them :p

But yeah, People being outraged that paid females were at a super party like this are ridiculous. THis was a party run by a guy to please himself. He shouldn't have to worry about pleasing the PC police at his own party

Yeah! We paid 20 bucks for a game and this guy has the nerve to go to a party? He is getting laid and we're sitting here waiting for our updates. Makes me so mad...

Wait wait wait....so Notch had some lady dancers at a party? That's it?

What's....the problem here?

Really, all I think it boils down to is a misguided attempt to extrapolate from the IGDA event that the problem there was "Paid female dancers + Party = Bad," when the reality was that there was more contextually going on in that example than here that isn't automatically applicable in this example.

Not pure anymore!
If I was a (straight) man working in a female dominated industry, and I went to party where there were male hosts being paid to dance and socialise with the women, I would probably start questioning whether this industry was really 'for me'.

I don't think this is at all about the women or men being hired and dancing or whatever. I don't think I think it's about the messaging sent to people working in an industry with a minority gender.

You know, its sad that you said it a bunch of times on the first page of this topic, still people aren't "getting" it. Granted the whole thing was a rumour but still I'm surprised that people aren't getting why some, especially women, would find it to be in bad taste.

@Babylonian @chadsalty so we had a room full of girls on phones back stage, or we paid girls to party in the VIP area? 100% false, dog.

https://twitter.com/KyleMcCarthy/status/317676544338300928

@Babylonian you're not listening - we didn't pay girls.

https://twitter.com/KyleMcCarthy/status/317679619274854400

@Babylonian we had servers roaming for drinks, hosts pointing out bathrooms and coat check, we had runners showing people in and out via VIP

Follow the convo for the rest.

Wait, you're serious? Awesome! I'm a big fan of Metropolis Part 2 (although Part 1 was great too), Ghosts in the Machine especially.

If the party was meant for females, then, maybe i'd feel uncomfortable and leave, but there's no reason to make a hubbub over it. It's not my party that im attending, it's the other persons party, and they can do whatever they like.

Notch sharing his success with the women. And people complain that this industry is anti-women.
Not entirely serious.

Considering that it basically was a nightclub that just happened to be paid for by Notch, we're going to have to drive into the topic of sexism in electronic dance music. No point isolating just this because a game developer paid for it.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Some people need to get out more!

And yes, there were models at these parties. Didn't go to the GDC one, but I went to their Pax PRIME one, and there were around 200 or so individuals in the VIP area with bracelets a different color, indicating they were from an agency (men and women). but it wasn't vulgar or anything, which is why I find this awkward. They were good looking, well dressed, nice people. It wasn't like people walking around in bikinis, it was nothing more than you'd normally see at a club. In fact, may bbe better, since most of the models where actually pretty friendly and down to earth.

edit:
this is also not news worthy, it's like people never go to events in any industry. A lot of times too, the models come from the venue itself... you throw a party, rent out a space, and the venue provides talent. It's no different in other industries. I suppose you can opt out of that, but it's fairly standard.

Nothing wrong with hiring strippers for a party. I wouldn't do it myself, but whatever.

I think it just largely depends on how inclusive you're trying to be with attendees. If you're trying to invite a large number of people where diversity is encouraged, I think it behooves the host to consider complaints that attendees might have. Obviously, though, not every party needs to be this way. There's also nothing wrong with having a party where the specifics are clearly one of being an "it is what it is" situation where the underlying message is "if that doesn't sound like a good time to you, then by all means don't come."

Mind you, I'm not saying that this party was necessarily supposed to be either of those things. Actual complaints from party goers right now seem sparse and limited to men, and the accusations themselves aren't even solidified. For all we know, everyone in attendance (save for the people in the OP) had a great time, and Notch didn't even pay women to be there in the first place.

I don't blame them at all, I'm questioning the indifference some express to the fact these kind of job exists.

Been in a few VG conferences and that's just plain embarrassing. It makes me ashamed to be a part of this community. This is just so lame on every level, and both for the girls and the attendees.

Trust me, the girls don't care. The only people who care are white knights and girls who don't do the job.

Even if this was as "bad" as people are making it out to be (by all accounts it seems it wasn't), I don't believe every game company should act like an ambassador for the gaming industry. Perhaps that changes a bit when their party is open to a bunch of random people, but I still think they should be able to host their party in any legal manner they like.

People bringing up the IGDA thing, well, that's a completely different situation entirely. Romero was right to react the way she did.

Well it's sounding like these rumors are 100% bullshit anyway based on twitter comments. Probably people who've never been to a club before coupled with the sexism problem in the games media again recently caused them to start blathering things falsely.

And "not being ok with the gender thing" tweet could very well be that the dude wasn't happy that the hired staff (waitresses, bartenders) at the club were all outgoing women (yikes!) working for a tip.

Edit: post below, who knows. This is all so stupid over a VIP club party.

No of course, but being hired only to be "appreciated" by lame guys too socially awkward to meet actual girls, that's pretty much objectification in my book.
I don't think it is appropriate to hire dancers at a party. You know, if your party don't suck people will dance for themselves.

Part of the explanation cited for women being hired by the club at last year's event was that the real crux of the issue was that males greatly outnumbered females in attendance. Guys -- at the very least heterosexual ones -- aren't generally going to get out on the floor and dance with other guys. In that regard -- though I'm not advocating for hiring dancers -- I can at least understand the objective without deriding it as inherently sexist.

I probably wouldn't hire dancers for my party, but that's mainly because this isn't my scene. My ideal night out involves something more along the lines of pool/shuffleboard/darts and music that doesn't drown out conversation. A nice outdoor patio is also a plus. Loud club music and flashy lights? Eh...

We are ankle deep only, this can't be the end!

That's not how it works (assuming you are not talking about escorts).

They pay the rate for a person to stay at the party (for 2 hours usually), to do what they would do for free... party. Why? Because attractive people and a perceptually "fun" party attracts more customers. They are not obliged to entertain or "endure" the patrons. They are party fodder. Of course, there are some calls for more specific purposes too, like when there is a "celebrity" in a vip area, so they "embelish" it to please the individual. But still, no "enduring".

If you are talking about escorts (or prostitutes), then you'd have a Cable Guy situation there. ;P
And they don't have to endure you either.
Ah, I see. So not much different when they let girls into a club for free.

Look, the reality is this line of work isn't going to help your last 30's/early 40's. Then what are these people supposed to do with their lives? Just marry a rich man and perpetuate another stereotype about women? We should be helping women get better jobs and have better lives.

Maybe women don't want/need your patronizing help. You even called what these women did "slutty" in a previous post. Your avatar should be in the dictionary next to the definition of white-knight.

It's incredible that there are a few people outraged by this.

Is this an example of someone's criticism/opinion not getting validated immediately and that person then making dumb mistakes in their self-inflicted fluster? How do you not realise what you're typing when you type it. I mean, the guy has defended the party he organised and denied the accusations. Is that not enough to accept until more information comes up? She says he's shitting on people's observations; surely it's equally shitty to press the issue on him after he's given his side of the story (assuming he's being honest)?

If this was a private party I don't see how anyone can expect some kind of restrictions to be in place.

I also don't understand why this is on Gaming side.

Even if Notch or his party organizers hired women at a private party, why is this being discussed on here? Individually you could think hiring dancers/escorts/strippers is scummy. But that is completely irrelevant when it's a private event and has nothing to do with the industry.

Why are we discussing someones personal life and what they do away from the industry? That i find weird.
