Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

ho-lee crap

Is this an example of someone's criticism/opinion not getting validated immediately and that person then making dumb mistakes in their self-inflicted fluster? How do you not realise what you're typing when you type it. I mean, the guy has defended the party he organised and denied the accusations. Is that not enough to accept until more information comes up? She says he's shitting on people's observations; surely it's equally shitty to press the issue on him after he's given his side of the story (assuming he's being honest)?

She then goes on to say that she's right. And hey, for bonus points, here come the trolls! (I was going to link to a second troll, but Twitter suspended 'em)

So at this point it's literally people upset Notch had attractive (unpaid) women at his party?

It's annoying shit like this distracts from actual problems in the industry like what Meagan Marie (and other women like her) go through in professional situations.

If you are okay with all those hostess almost everywhere at gaming events, you shouldn't be against hostess at parties also. Just saying.

I was at the notch party last night. The party was originally secret but then leaked to promoters weeks ahead of time. I would say 50% of the people there were industry while the other half were typical rave/club types.

I was the 20th or so on line so when I got in there weren't a lot of people there. However several dozen girls( wearing sexy clothing) had come in through the VIP entrance and were getting a pep talk from one of the event people as if they worked there.

Events like these are sexually driven affairs. The problem is that these are also quasi game industry events and clubs/raves contribute to the objectification of women.

Some people need to get out more!

And yes, there were models at these parties. Didn't go to the GDC one, but I went to their Pax PRIME one, and there were around 200 or so individuals in the VIP area with bracelets a different color, indicating they were from an agency (men and women). but it wasn't vulgar or anything, which is why I find this awkward. They were good looking, well dressed, nice people. It wasn't like people walking around in bikinis, it was nothing more than you'd normally see at a club. In fact, may bbe better, since most of the models where actually pretty friendly and down to earth.

edit:
this is also not news worthy, it's like people never go to events in any industry. A lot of times too, the models come from the venue itself... you throw a party, rent out a space, and the venue provides talent. It's no different in other industries. I suppose you can opt out of that, but it's fairly standard.
agreed. Christ, it's nice and all that people are now very interested in talking about a subject that has deep rooted concerns and all that, but it seems like now people are hyper-sensitive to the issue and are jumping at literally every possible sniff of evidence that tomfoolery might be taking place to put an exclamation point on their stance in the argument.

I guess my problem with this is how Minecraft only gets barebone updates every couple of months - if we're lucky, and yet they're paying strippers 300/hr. to pretend to be interested in their conversations?

What about all the things that the devs have promised would be integrated into MC that've been pushed back and pushed back and put on indefinite hold?

And then Notch moves onto Scrolls and his Space Sim Programming game 0x000 or something like that?

I'm starting to get the feeling that Notch got really lucky and became a millionaire on just the Alpha version of Minecraft, so now he's going to just keep starting projects, gathering money for them, and then "moving on" and dumping a B or C team in as soon as they hit a bare minimum of playability.

This is by far the funniest post in this thread.

Wow. Um nothing to see I think. So what if they paid chicks to be there and dance and be entertaining? It's not like they're doing anything illegal if that is the case. Now had they been paying women to sleep with people at the party then that would be a scandal. lol

i've never been a fan of booth babes (or booth bros, yes they exist)/parties with half naked dancers of any gender, but good lordy... have these people been to a party like this before? if your not used to seeing this type of thing, it can be a lot to take in.

my best friend works as a party doll while attending college in SF. she makes great money and loves it. it's not for everyone and i've heard of the occasional man who will try to cross a line but overall little comes of it. im sure some of the women are treated disrespectfully at times given the atmosphere (you can be a women attending a party for that to happen easily) but most parties of any credibility aren't going to allow patrons to treat a hired dancer like a prostitute.

honestly, i've seen male dancers get way more roughed up at parties versus a female. most people, especially with impaired thinking, seem to execute a general idea that its still not OK to touch a female (red flags, molestation and police flash in mind), a shirtless male in tight pants/shorts is fair game. He should like it or take it as horseplay.

next, gamers will become offended by scantly clad, hip gyrating cos players. oh, thats OK because they happen to be role playing. sega always did a good job of towing that line.

when nintendo throws a party with a female pole dancer dressed as peach, page me. at least that would be something worthy of an actual conversation.

If this story is true, they were making MAD BUCK from it. Do you think they gave a shit they were being "objectified"? It's a job

This particular incident aside, the general practice of hiring attractive women to stand around so that men can gaup at them might reinforce the idea that women's only use in society is to look attractive for men. So even if the women being hired are happy with the situation, it can potentially be damaging to the perception of women in society more generally. Does that make sense?

in gamer party, they are not being objectified, they are being glorified.
maybe that was the problem?

:)

You don't seem to understand what the word objectified means in this context.

This isn't remotely true. The people that believe things like this need to stop treating the actions of individuals like they're supposed to represent an entire group of people. Its completely idiotic.

Dancers.. at a party..

Sounds about right? I'm really not understanding why this is an issue. Not willing to get banned over some nonsense in this thread so I'll abstain from further participating, but since when did hiring dancers for a party become taboo?

Why do you think some conventions like PAX prohibit booth babes entirely?

That was the complaint a lot of attendees had about the MineCon party. It was filled with random Vegas clubbers while some of the paid attendees couldn't get in.

Why the fuck is Hooters still in business? What about every damn casino ever that has "hot" hostesses prancing around serving free alcohol?

If that's the case, yeah I'd be pissed about that.

I don't really see what outrage is happening that others are so...outraged about. As far as I can tell, the only person who seems to be making a thing about it is that woman on twitter who made the initial allegation, and she's clearly not making a strong case.

The most I see in this thread are some going "Uh, that's kind of weird, and it's not the most progressive thing to do, but whatevs."

So uh, why the outrage over the outrage?

There's probably a bunch of other people on twitter that are tweeting about it

How do you know it isn't remotely true? Could you elaborate?

I'm also not sure how the section I've bolded is relevant to my post.

I just find it hilarious that a person with a twitter handle called "winners use drugs" is complaining about professionalism. I see that it's supposedly used facetiously, but I still find it hilarious.

Well most winners use drugs, its true. Winners try to get an advantage over others anyway they can, even if it break the normal regulations. Cheating and Luck is a big part of being #1. The first guy who cheated was the guy who used a stick instead of fists to beat somebody up.

There is some evidence to say that Mojang weren't involved in what happened. To that end, I apologize for spreading misinformation. But I still find people's reaction to this weird.

Username and avatar quote are just too perfect.

For good or bad, knee-jerk reactions over twitter are becoming more and more commonplace.

Yeah, we all know where the joke stems from, but the majority of people outside of the gaming industry would probably not get the joke, and just think she is some troll internet user. Not that she is someone who is trying to run a gaming site/journalist/blog/vlog/whatever they call people these days who put their opinions on the internet thinking people actually care about their opinion.

I think your issue is with evolution.

with all the unemployment and layoffs happening in this economy, can we really afford to deny some willing dancers a chance to get paid $300/hr?
