Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

This seems like basically a problem with Twitter more than anything else. I recall similar things happening before. All it takes is for one person to make a claim on Twitter, and a couple people to believe them and retweet it or comment about it. Then everyone sees multiple tweets about something happening and assume it's true and start talking about it. I think I remember reading an article about this phenomenon after someone was tweeting fake information when Hurricane Sandy hit New York.

OMFG what a joke.

Yeah, seems that a lot of these industry people never went to a presumed classy party with people throwing some money at it. Everybody always looks hot there and they don't need your 300 bucks for that. Boom! Generalization up in this, but true most of the time.

Also Twitter and Reddit feel like the sewer of the regular internet for me nowadays.

It's like a 140 character Jbaird story ;)

Male feminists are hilarious.
Uh.. You obviously don't even know what feminism is, so your post is the laughable one here.

Wanting equality is hilarious? I guess me wanting gays to have the same rights as I do is also hilarious, since I'm not gay?

Wow. That's more than a handful of self-righteousness.
Notice how she's using the word "paid companionship" when she really wants to use the word prostitution. She has a problem with women being paid for specifically being women, that's what it all comes down to.

Real shitty that someone would make up a story. Just takes away from real issues that do need to be addresses. Thanks for using twitter irresponsibly to start controversy where none should have existed. I hate the Internet somedays.

Looks like simping to me.

He's always overtly nice to females (or vaginal companions, as he likes to put it).

So is what actually happened that a couple of people saw some attractive girls and started yelling about social injustice on twitter and reddit because they thought something must be up?

I'm confused about this. I'll give Notch props for trying to reach out and find out what happened, but I don't really see how this conversation is going to develop beyond "Did you hire women to stand around?" "Nope" "Okay then."

Plus, I feel like she would not be the person to talk to about it, since she wasn't even there. If Notch wanted to find out about the event he should talk to the people who first made the claim, not the person who fiercely defended it.

Can anyone list all the journo's and industry peeps who jumped on the bandwagon to lambast Notch over this without the facts? I'd like a mental list so I know who to disregard in future.

She's still insisting something happened. Doesn't know when to give up. Now she's blaming the club. WTF are the people who were actually there, why does Holly think it's her cause to fight?

So can someone Lionel Mandrake this thread for people who haven't read all the pages?

If I'm to get this right:

1. Someone tweets about 'hired' women who were put in VIP section to entertain 'lonely, anti-social' developers/fans?
2. These anti social guys were being sexist, saying and doing stupid shit to them?
3. Notch says this is untrue, and then...

Is this basically it? If this is all untrue then who made it up and why? And why would people get faux outraged over something they hadn't confirmed?

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
i don't get why i'm supposed to care

seems like a couple of people trying to create an issue where there is none. just embarrassing all around.

I guess my problem with this is how Minecraft only gets barebone updates every couple of months - if we're lucky, and yet they're paying strippers 300/hr. to pretend to be interested in their conversations?

What about all the things that the devs have promised would be integrated into MC that've been pushed back and pushed back and put on indefinite hold?

And then Notch moves onto Scrolls and his Space Sim Programming game 0x000 or something like that?

I'm starting to get the feeling that Notch got really lucky and became a millionaire on just the Alpha version of Minecraft, so now he's going to just keep starting projects, gathering money for them, and then "moving on" and dumping a B or C team in as soon as they hit a bare minimum of playability.

this post is the most laughable "entitled gamer" thing i've ever read

must be "paid companions"
Notch says no

here we are

Not making this shit up:

A personal acquaintance of mine is a former editor at Gameranx and he told me that the site's EIC usually hires women (or gives women preference if there is a vacated position on the site).

Welcome to the twitter-tumblr-reddit age folks, where joining the bandwagon of tears, pain, and pointed fingers for social justice is more important than the truth. It's taking the internet by storm and its infection of the gaming industry wasn't the beginning, nor will it be the end.

Nice to see people starting to notice. Pop culture and entertainment are such easy targets.

That's a great way to get the best staff for the job, indiscriminately hiring based on sex. If a male could ever prove their hiring practices it'd be lawsuit city.

Equality lol

Maybe?

Enough bullshit has already been wrought in this thread due to false and misleading information already. I'm not going to speculate why some people made the assumptions they did until I actually hear their story.

Twitter "news" needs to be banned from GAF. People make up shit, goes on Twitter, someone reports it here - cycle repeats. Guess Notch got the short end of this shit stick.

Somebody tweets something that has no truth, others take that tweet (without confirming it) and twist the logic with some faux outrage. Accusations are made. Kinda like a modern day Chinese whispers. People getting paid keep a party moving along is hardly something to get angry over in the first place.

Making the assumption that a group of pretty women at a party must have been paid to be there is probably the saddest (and most sexist) part of this whole debacle. The stupidity that followed afterwards was to be expected.

To me, that says a whole lot about those who originally jumped to the (false) conclusions in the first place.

Worse, is when Misguided refused to to update his OP, even when asked repeatedly to do so. If you're going to make a thread, at least update the damn thing.

... that they will do anything to jump on the latest trend of whatever news might be popping up in their field of choice because things like twitter give them a voice and a platform and allow attention that shouldn't be afforded to them.

You know that quote "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel?" Well, the "intellectuals" operating in the periphery of the gaming industry that make up the "new games press" have two such refuges. Gender and ludonarrative dissonance.

Another day, another dumb story somehow involving this dude from Polygon.

As someone who spent a year with the job these two media moguls are doing, I'm ashamed of and for them.
