Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

Calling a situation where a message becomes garbled and incomprehensible after passing between people "Chinese whispers" reduces your credibility as an expert on thinking before you speak lest you unjustly slander someone.

... that they will do anything to jump on the latest trend of whatever news might be popping up in their field of choice because things like twitter give them a voice and a platform and allow attention that shouldn't be afforded to them.

Are you talking about the people who jumped on the crusade bandwagon, or the people who were actually at the party that started this stupid Twitter rumor train?

Because I'd rather not accuse random people, some of whom are successful enough not to need the attention, of making things up when there might be a legitimate reason for the misunderstanding.

I'd hope this story would teach us not to make accusations based on shreds of Twitter evidence.

Everyone on Twitter involved in creating this story should be fucking embarrassed. How the fuck do you accuse people of doing shit without having ANY kind of tangible evidence? "Oh well people felt you did." So perception equals reality now apparently.

Apparently if you want to meet Notch all you have to do is accuse him of doing something on Twitter.

This is the problem with feminism (not to be confused with women's rights fight) in general. It's all about "feelings" and perception not the facts.

Uh.. You obviously don't even know what feminism is, so your post is the laughable one here.

What's odd is that you think- actually, it seems that you fervently believe- that feminism is about equality. What gave you that impression? The immense amount of non-passion and non-dedication feminists have for marginalized men and disempowered men?

Probably the fact that it's true. Feminists do, actually, care about *genuinely* marginalized men (gay men of color, transmen, and so on). Much more than idiotic MRAs do.

Out of curiosity, have much passion and dedication have you demonstrated toward any of those causes?

Really? So people rotting in prison, or people who are living in a gang-ridden lower-city environment where they then go to prison, people who are on the receiving end of violence, homeless veterans, homeless men in general, people who are ostracized in society for being autistic, or "creeps", or whatnot- these aren't marginalized people? The fact that you define "genuinely marginalized" as "LGBT issues" is pretty stupid.

As opposed to the strenuous focus on rich white women at the higher levels of society- those are the marginalized?

I mean there is a truly serious amount of double-think you have to swallow to pretend that a movement that specifically and constantly focuses on power- specifically, the taking of it- is about equality. You don't divine the nature of a movement through rhetoric; you divine it through how they act and what they are passionate about.

I'm not a "MRA" I don't even know what that stands for.

Intersectional feminism does address race, economics, et cetera. And the idea that taking power and fighting for equality are incompatible is silly if you look at any historical fight for equality ever.

You know it would be interesting if some rich ballin' game developer just happened to personally hire several women who were in the VIP area. Then someone talks to a couple of them and things snowball from there.

so I didn't make it through all 22 pages..... but as an attendee of this party who snuck his way into the VIP section it blows my mind that people would have time to complain about about anything at all. For me the VIP consisted of free top shelf liquor, mini burgers, and a great view of an extremely impressive stage setup. Highlight of the night was notch up on stage during skrillex and diplo looking hilariously out of place.
Overall 11/10 party... would go get drunk and eat food for free on dat minecraft money any day

Please stop, you're going to turn the focus of this thread away from a celebratory circle-jerk around the corpse of some woman I've never heard of before into some bizarre "men's rights" fanaticism where you show self-righteous ignorance about a topic you know little about.

The ignorance is so funny to see and hear. I don't know much about the club situation in SF but I can tell you about the club life in LA. You will see "escorts" (males and females) at every LA club. They may know the club owners or bouncers or whatever. They just get in somehow. There maybe a totally progress thinking band playing and there will be "escorts" at the show. It's just how it is in LA. Doesn't mean the promoter or band paid them to be there. I'm pretty certain Notch had nothing to do with paying "escorts" to be at his party. While I'm pretty sure there was some "escort" types at his party.

Another day, another dumb story somehow involving this dude from Polygon.

As someone who spent a year with the job these two media moguls are doing, I'm ashamed of and for them.
Yep.

Shaping any scandal into a platform for themselves. Refusing to admit mistakes when you were wrong. Escaping to Twitter and getting unassuming friends to fight battles for them until enough time has passed for most people to forget they were wrong.

They'll never receive any kind of meaningful punishment or criticism for what they do, because that is the future of journalism. People don't care enough about credibility.

They're not incompatible- but they're not the same.

They are different axes. In truth, no large political movement is ever really about equality. It is about equality when it is convenient- that is, when pushing for equality would result in a net gain in power, resources, etc. As soon as it stops being convenient, the push for equality dries up, and it just gets ignored; or it continues only where it continues to bring net gains. (i.e. immense feminist focus on getting higher tier of society redistributed - senators, president, CEOs, etc.- but far, far lower focus or passion for fixing the educational system for young boys and young men; mental illness rates among the same; rates of violence suffered by male youth in dispossessed communities; etc.). What focus exists on these issues is mostly a very secondary effort, and bound by dogma.

Out of curiosity, have much passion and dedication have you demonstrated toward any of those causes?

I do what I can in the circumstances of my life.
http://www.aidindia.org/main/
http://www.nami.org/

particularly these two organizations. AID has regular meetings at JHU which I go to once a month, and review or discuss development projects in India, mostly in rural India. I specifically focused on a tribal aid project called Bhalopahar in WB and spent two months here each summer in 2009 and 2010. I'd worked in education before, so I mostly worked with the school here, which is focused on educating tribal kids. For the purpose of this post, that would include boys and girls both.

While I was more active with NAMI in New Jersey I still go to some meetings and contribute. I deal with significantly impairing OCD/anxiety mental illness personally, while holding a full time job in healthcare IT. I dropped out of part-time law school recently because of the illness and the demands of the job. The main contribution I can give here is financial, so that's what I do.

So that's what I've tried. How about you? Got anything to share?

Someone brought up "a laughable misunderstanding of feminism", so I made a comment on it. It's pretty richly ironic that you would wank off about "fanaticism" and "self-righteous ignorance". It rather demonstrates a complete lack of self-awareness, and a strange idea that a critique of feminism must be "bizarre" and "fanatical", as if the thing was so pure it could not be touched except by the corrupted.

Haha and so it begins!

She's still insisting something happened. Doesn't know when to give up. Now she's blaming the club. WTF are the people who were actually there, why does Holly think it's her cause to fight?

these are her 15 minutes, she's gonna milk em. she's already addressed her hoard of new followers, and simp-master aegeis already high-fived her (phil kollar too, who i actually like).

A focus on getting CEOs, senators, and presidents? Dude, I don't think you've really paid attention to feminists. You may be thinking of crazed Hillary Clinton supporters in 2008 that turned to supporting Sarah Palin, though.

I have no idea what notch was accused of doing, and reading through this thread has become kind of impossible (I might try a 3rd time later), but he's done so much to promote the let's play community, and donated money to all sorts of causes, that I'd probably forgive him anyway. He seems like a really good guy. Maybe that's hypocritical of me.

Could SOMEONE give me a brief description of what happened? Was it true? It seems like it wasn't true, but i can't say for sure. Why are people angry?

notch basically forced everyone to play a ROM hack of Duke Nukem where Gloria Steinem's face was put on all the strippers, then sign NDA's to not cry about it on twitter...but one brave pseudo-journalist heard about the jetpacks being in the shape of dicks from a friend of a friend, so notch has been shamelessly backpedaling since

Arthur Gies has become a barometer for whatever aspects of the games industry are in discussion. Seems as though if you agree with him you're in the wrong camp, disagree with him and you're A-OK.

Thanks Arthur for showing me the way.

On the internet, it's so easy to be flip and clever and so hard to say anything sincere.
Haha, you responded with a dumb tu quoque that suggested I was being fanatical, self-righteously ignorant and completely lacking self-awareness for not wanting you to crap up this thread with mens-rights nonsense or some other red herring ie accusing feminists of not being genuine for daring to want equal representation in board rooms or politics. I'd say you deserve a massive tip of the hat for trying to be flip and clever while completely misfiring with your knee-jerk contentless ad hominems. Bravo!

Wait, why is it not legitimate for feminists to push for more women in positions of power?

I don't think it's not legitimate, I think it's completely legitimate.

It is, however, rather stupid to pretend the whole exercise is about equality. It's the rhetorical pretense I have a problem with, not so much the act. No political movement of this sort is ever really about equality; they are ultimately driven by power, regardless of the wishes of a few among them.

Of course it's about equality. Less than 19% of members of Congress and Senators are women.

It is a fundamental goal of any movement for equality to make society's power structures more representative of that society as a whole.

There aren't enough women in positions of power in this country, period. That has everything to do with equality.

If this turns out to be nothing more than a witch hunt, then I hope the witches get burned.

I think you mean the hunters.

Either way, this made me laugh.
