Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

MThanded

I Was There! Official L Receiver 2/12/2016
Recap: in the wake of the IGDA party dancer scandal, unsubstantiated Twitter rumors surface about women being paid to be in the VIP room of a Mojang party, apparently too attractive and numerous to possibly be there of their own volition (sexism much?). Mojang flatly deny claim and the source of the rumors is rooted out, essentially a game of Twitter Telephone, but a delusional feminist extremist crusader decrees that Notch is still at fault for people thinking that they were paid for even if they weren't, and that he should take some sort of action in reparation. Arthur Gies takes her side and promotes her on Twitter.

The OP is permed for going on a witch hunt (in conjunction with insane extremist posts afterwards) and refusing to update his thread after the attempt at scandal fell apart. Libelous, agenda-driven bullshit.

Arthur Gies is officially the most disreputable person in the enthusiast press.
Shit, I just read this. Amazing. EviLore putting the hammer down.

As someone who has been a long time fan of Gies, (especially in relation to rebel fm) I am sad to see his recent exploits. Rebel FM is still one of my go to podcasts. Wish he would just chill. This and the SimCity fiasco were both ridiculous.

Evil laying his foot down. My man.

Agenda driven witch-hunts that created this thread does far more harm to the cause of gender equality in video games than anything else. I hope people realize this.

On a positive note, I hadn't seen Schreier's apology before. That's how these things are supposed to end. All of us are biased towards defending ourselves. Stepping back, finding clarity, explaining yourself, and apologizing is all anybody wants when this stuff happens.
Who is Schreier?

Polygon, you've been unbookmarked. I'll add you back when either:

1 - you distance yourself entirely from Arthur and his idiotic stance
2 - Arthur offers what I consider to be a sincere apology
3 - Arthur no longer works for you. Although if that comes later than sooner, you'll remain unbookmarked.

Integrity. Do you have any?

It's not as if the other big-wigs at Polygon are overflowing with integrity, though. Let's not forget Brian Crecente's bullshit from that Sim City fiasco.

Well, this turned out even more interesting than I thought it would. Glad it's where it is now, even though this has clearly caused more problems than it ever attempted to solve.

Who is Schreier?
Pretty much the only good journalist at Kotaku. He fucked up a couple of times in the past, but admitted to it. He still posts here and writes excellent articles from time to time that are actually worth giving Kotaku hits.
And even though I dislike Kotaku as a site, they deserve props for their rating system and not sucking Metacritic's dick.

Link to Gies twitter post where he does the white knighting?

He still hasn't paid the $10 to djblackice, what the hell. Textbook example of a stubborn person.

Dude, 2013? People have been saying this for years. I think Rebel FM opened a lot of eyes.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't much aware of the dude since I try to avoid video game journos and their websites, but I noticed when he posted here than the guy was full of shit, what did Rebel FM said? Any links? I'd love to read/hear about it.

I'm not really sure what happened here other than Arthur Gies apparently embarrassed himself yet again. Which confirms that we are in fact in a day that ends in Y.

Man, I need to read through this whole thing. I wasn't keeping up with all this.

Totally crazy how this all played out. Wow.

I guess being around attractive people really makes some people deeply uncomfortable.

Read a good deal of the thread and then tabbed over to Twitter and unfollowed Gies. Time for Polygon to hire a PR handler.

Better get three or four, they'll be busy.

While I agree that some of how Holly Green initially wrote about this was problematic, I think that the reaction that she's getting from some of the people in this thread is completely overboard.

It seems as if the initial allegations were unfounded, but the response to Green on twitter (and in this thread) is even more damning evidence on how women are treated in gaming spaces.

Hiring a woman to look attractive at a party doesn't mean you think that's all a woman's purpose in life is. I watch pornography but that doesn't mean I think women should only be having sex for money. This mentality that if you pay a woman for something based on appearence you're devaluing her is absurd.

Pornography is a whole other discussion really and I know that there's a wealth of academic literature on the societal impact of pornography. A friend of mine is actually planning to attend a conference on the topic later in the year!

I've never been hired based on my appearance so I don't know how I would feel about it. Personally, I would try to avoid being an employer/employee in a profession within which that would happen.

You're right, you didn't say any of those things, and I apologize. I actually never intended to say that you had these opinions, I just directed them at you since you were the one that was playing devils advocate and it was simpler then typing "everyone who holds those opinions". Either way, it was bad wording by me, and I apologize.

Thanks. That's big of you and I appreciate it.

Regarding the issue at hand, I agree that it could press upon those stereotypes, but I don't think its as wide spread as you'd think.

And one of my biggest peeves is the idea that the world should be limited for some people just so other people will change the way they act or think. I believe that thinking is completely backwards.

If we spend our time readapting our society to where its just not POSSIBLE for men to think that way as easily instead of leaving it open to interpretation and explaining why men SHOULDNT think that way then we are doing society a disservice. Because if that's the way we act we aren't actually progressing as a society, we are merely trying to limit it so the worst types of people dictate how the world works.

As you've agreed with the problem doesn't lie in the woman being naked, it lies in the man not understanding that the woman isn't
naked just so he can enjoy it.
So why punish the woman who wants to be naked? It doesn't solve anything. The woman should
be able to be naked without worrying about
anything. So the logical thing is to find ways to make sure the man understands that just because some women dont mind being naked or having sex for money it doesn't mean every woman holds those same ideals.

Anything else is just limiting womens lives to make sure men don't think a certain way. Its a whole different form of sexism.

That was a very considered and thought-provoking post.

I think we fundamentally agree, especially on the bolded. One point I would make is that in these situations it's overwhemingly men who are the customers in stripping, prostitution and pornography. I think that sets up an unequal gender dynamic that just doesn't sit right with me. Especially in the broader societal context when women are judged on/by their looks much more often and intensely than men.

Is this Arthur fellow the same guy who GAF gave thousands of dollars to when the 1UP folk got fired to start their own podcast/website?

RebelFM, was it? Did he work for 1UP or was he just some dude who was friends with those guys and just showed up on the podcast?

I just keep hearing his name everywhere on here lately and trying to think of how he became relevant somehow.
