Fabricated Notch/Mojang party escort allegations; Twitter monsters spring into action

You can't ignore the uneven nature of the sexes and the backlash toward them in this industry let alone society. From the fake gamer girl meme, to the top 10 hot babes in tech/science lists, to reddit, to the rape threats and explicit sexism online every day for many women. If things were more balanced you wouldn't see people complaining about a random dongle joke or bro terminology thrown around.

uh... here we go again.

Twitter Monsters is a very apt term. There are many Blog Monsters out there, too. It's like the opposite side of the same "wow, I have a voice on the internet and no one can stop me!" coin that makes people spout racist, sexist and homophobic junk. "Why do I need to be fair or thorough? I'm bitter about some shit and am just gonna send out daggers in every direction."

What, did he play that Burial ripoff stuff? Which is a sound that used to be called... Yeah, you see where this is going.

Well, to my unsophisticated ear it was mainly dance/house, a little hiphop and a solid dose of dubstep towards the end. Skrillex and Diplo were DJing together.

Everybody was having a great time, so it doesn't really matter anyway, right?

Just read about this whole ordeal and cannot believe the BS some people try to pull. I am happy that Notch's name has been cleared and I just hope that all of the people who joined condemned Notch have the dignity to apologise.

It really is a shame that some people have tried to take advantage of serious issues to drive their own agendas.....

If there is no picture, but witnesses giving different versions of the story, I don't know what all this discussion is finally about.

So she was actually a groupie? Which means she was with the band and had absolutely nothing to do with Notch and co. Nick Robinson is just as bad as Holly Green in this story.

EDIT: Now I'm confused. Seems like she's not a groupie but won't confirm or deny Nick's story. She might be a dentist I have NFI.
oh my god that tweet was A) about a totally different party [the Destructoid one] and B) obviously a joke you idiots

like, the timestamp is right there in the picture. look. look at it.

I feel so dumb for defending him in the other thread. What a gong show.

I wonder how it feels to be thought of as being a paid for dancer/hostess when in fact you're just a woman, who happens to be attractive, who's there for the same reasons as everyone else.

Recap: in the wake of the IGDA party dancer scandal, unsubstantiated Twitter rumors surface about women being paid to be in the VIP room of a Mojang party, apparently too attractive and numerous to possibly be there of their own volition (sexism much?). Mojang flatly deny claim and the source of the rumors is rooted out, essentially a game of Twitter Telephone, but a delusional feminist extremist crusader decrees that Notch is still at fault for people thinking that they were paid for even if they weren't, and that he should take some sort of action in reparation. Arthur Gies takes her side and promotes her on Twitter.

The OP is permed for going on a witch hunt (in conjunction with insane extremist posts afterwards) and refusing to update his thread after the attempt at scandal fell apart. Libelous, agenda-driven bullshit.

Arthur Gies is officially the most disreputable person in the enthusiast press.

Man. I was curious to know what the whole story was, and this seemed like a pretty solid recap. I remember when I was a fan of Gies, and when I listened to Rebel FM on a weekly basis during my earlier college years. Not anymore.

Thanks for the summary, Evil.

With someone like you "moderating" NeoGAF, it's a wonder that press/developers post here at all. Pathetic that you feel the need to attack Holly Green.

His words weren't the best, but her actions in the matter created a scenario that didn't need to exist.

If anything he was too kind. Holly Green is a perfect example of why the label "feminist" is shit/a total joke and why neither me or my gf would call ourselves one despite being 100% pro equality.

He did the right thing, the entire story was bullshit. If you're so offended there's plenty of other forums that will happily let you read fabricated stories attempting to discredit and ruin developers.

You don't think she deserves castigation for being a hypocrite and trying to make a non-story into a controversy?

"We didn't hire anyone.", "I don't care if you feel you didn't hire them. It's how people in the VIP area felt"... or whatever variation of that she tweeted.

Yeah when you choose to ignore facts... you deserve all the feedback you are going to get. (I am talking normal civilized responses of course). Pretty easy to call you delusional and extremist if you do that.

If you followed the whole story, you would know that wasn't what she wanted to do at all. She wanted to have a dialog about this serious problem and set the record straight that it was PR's fault, not his, that caused this. Notch was friendly about this, had a discussion, set the record straight, and that was important.

She didn't do anything wrong.

Some people at the party felt uncomfortable because they were sure girls were hired for the event. Notch himself has said that the person arranging the party for him was bad with taking criticism, flat-out denying things that have happened in the past. I don't think she was trying to make something out of nothing.

Or maybe I misunderstood what this meant, which is totally possible and if so, I am sorry. https://twitter.com/notch/status/317694888722452480

Read the tweets, when you choose an explicit deny, shove it to the side as "I don't care what you feel", and continue your crusade.... you are pretty much taking the deliberate risk of making something out of nothing and you shouldn't be a cry baby when you are called out on it.

How is anyone supposed to respond to how uncomfortable other people felt by the presence of people at a party?

It's all very, very odd to me.

If he decides to ban me for saying it, I'm perfectly fine with his decision. I know what I said was mean, and I'm sorry if I hurt his feelings, but I don't appreciate his attempts and marginalizing a human as a nutjob.

"Whether or not you feel you guys did hire women for that purpose, ppl in the VIP area feel you did".

I know how I'd have replied to this and it wouldn't have been polite. What an infuriating 'tweet'.

The more I read it, the further the vein on my forehead pops out.

Dude check the tweets she was tweeting. She was a nutjob. One track mind, nothing could divert her course, she and every woman on earth was wronged, facts don't matter, it had to be truth because it fit my agenda! You provide me with facts, I don't care what you feel are facts. Sorry but you are considered a nutjob in my book.

I hate the use of the word "feel" in the way it's used in the Twitter shot in the OP - It's so passive aggressive. "I'm sorry you feel that way" etc.

Did I miss something or did she do something other than @ reply notch? Something you don't even see unless you .@ or follow both people? Why is he going directly for her and not, for example, Bennett Foddy who tweeted something more pointed about the whole thing? Or the dude who said he walked through a room of them? I understand that the OP has an obligation to update for posting the news, but when the admin posts something like this, why are they not obligated to update when the person they're throwing allegations at is publicly saying "hey, we figured it out, we're cool"?

I generally like Evil, his input and his policies but his post feels like it's written from a place of pushing his own opinion, not stating facts as he takes both the OP and Holly to task for.

She may not be a nutjob, but she exhibited nutjob tendencies.

It's pretty strange that so many of you think that promoters are really trustworthy organizations. "Welp the promoter denied it, case closed." There are enough tweets from people in the industry in that Kotaku article that I'm pretty sure something sketchy happened. It doesn't have to be Notch's fault. With a big name like Skrillex headlining, it's not really that crazy to believe that a promoter might bring in escorts. It's entirely possible that Notch is completely innocent *and* something sketchy happened.

But the "she's just jealous cause the girls are hotter than her" and "7 out of 10 lol" posts are really embarrassing to read.

This again? Really? She said it was a joke. Also, she said it because she appreciated the music video's decision to reverse the typical way society shows females.

Also, it's hilarious that you guys had to dig that deep to find anything to attack her with.

Sure. But if you want to make such allegations you better have solid ground to stand on.

lol @ this. i live in new orleans, and all of the girls i knew in college were shotgirls at least once in their life because you make an absurd amount of money in like 3 hours of work. no, they weren't abused by their parents, or beaten, or did massive amounts of drugs......they just took advantage of the oppurtunity. but clearly, GAF and these idiots on twitter should throw a fucking fit and yell at them and the people who bought shots from them.

From NOLA as well and my gf's best friend is going to do this for the second time this summer. It's hilarious how many people think that the girls at these clubs are like the ones in the movies. They're normal (most of the time) and are taking advantage of male hormones. That is really all it is.

And how much I think Notch is too immature for his age, this isn't a big deal.

Exactly! If most of the people posting here had read her tweets directly after meeting with Notch, they would realize her point. She was never out to shame or castigate Notch. She was trying to stress how PR has gone out of control, and it's not hard to confirm this. Look at the "hot women" Overkill contest for Payday 2. That's just one small example of the torrential downpour of bad ideas concocted by PR on a weekly basis. Look at EA! "Sin to Win", "Your Mom Will Hate Dead Space 2," the brass knuckles shipped to journalists for The Godfather 2...

I came in for an update when I saw the topic title had change, glad to get one. Cheers.

For what it's worth, I don't have an issue with EvilLore's characterization of the people involved in this case. There is something interesting about Holly's tweet looking to talk about PR or whatever has turned into bad PR for her, though.

We didn't have to dig deep. We just used her own words.

Well then here's a funny idea: Don't call him out in a public forum. Plenty of avenues to get in touch with someone that don't involve millions of notch's followers.

Wait. Holly Green? Holly Green of Destructoid? Okay, this makes a hell of a lot more sense now. She did some crazy articles back in the day. Call me skeptical, but I think she saw Notch as an easy target.

In the case of Holly, between the @ tweets she had public non-@tweets saying to the effect "they're denying it, they must be lying". However, so far, all of the evidence involve jumping to a conclusion. To take one of your examples: Person walked through a room (backstage) with a large quantity of women (looking at their mobiles after the show). Conclusion: OMG escorts! Anyone else see the problem with this logic? (And before you ask, the bracketed detail is in a later tweet in that particular conversation) Pretty much all of the accusations could have also concluded "they're staff", and occasionally "they're staff embellishing their job title because Skrillex and Diplo is playing together for AFAIK the first time". As I said, every possible answer of the question "who hired escorts?" have been either given a formal denial or are fairly far-fetched (why would a concert hall book escorts?).

You're reaching so hard to defend her I can hear the stretching from all the way over here.
