so yeah i thought it was another time for another group play... i wanted to pick a game that was a classic but one that doesn't get enough love... anyone wants to join me?

so basicaly the game starts like every mario game... bowser kidnap princess peach and is up to mario to save him,but he has to encounter many hardship before being able to fight bow...

man that was quick
anyway battles works like paper mario... pressing A when you attack increase the damage you do and pressing while you get attacked reduce the damage you receive, special attack varies depending on the character
fight with bowser is easy and short but mario just get blow out of the castle

can you hear him screaming? "WUHUHUHUHUHU"

no? really? that's news to me

1. Is this on VC?
2. I love that screen with Princess suspended; it reminds me of Wizards & Warriors where they show the princess being cut down. AWESOME.
3. Afraid I won't be joining you cats on this one, but I may follow this thread still.

sadly there is no VC release
but if i remember correctly it was announced as a title for VC when the service was still starting so maybe we are going to get it sooner or later

Great game overall though, Mario awesomeness combined with Squaresoft epicness, how could it fail?

This needs a VC release, stat. I suppose this was officially my first RPG. I really liked the battle mechanics, and the seemingly random nature of in-battle bonuses gave the fights a sort of arcade-style feel, which is odd considering it's an RPG.

I remember feeling cheated when i went out with my folks to buy this game. I was 9 at the time and we all had no idea how to play it. We thought it was going to be a traditional Mario game.

A few years later i finally understood the concept of the game and got really into it. It's a really great game. It was the first RPG i ever beat.

I should definitely replay this. I played it for the first time a few years ago and was very disappointed and stopped about halfway through. But I have to justify blowing a lot of cash on it, so I might as well try it again.

No. And I doubt it'll ever be on there. For some reason Nintendo really, really seems intent on erasing this game's existence. My guess is that there's some seriously fucked up copyright issues with this game.

In a perfect world, SE is going to make Matrix to a remake on the DS.

Can you give some more insight into exactly why you don't like SMRPG? I know you don't care for it, but I can't recall exactly why you don't.

I played through it for the first time about three years or so ago and loved it.

nah i don't think that's the problem or else geno cameo in mario & luigi would have been counterproductive no?
I'm assuming the title means that real Gaffers play Paper Mario instead?
real gaffers play earthbound... i don't want to be a real gaffer :(

The problem with Super Mario RPG is that every single aspect of it is done better in the Paper Mario games.

It's a good game, and I'll buy it when it comes to the VC, but you know WHY it doesn't get too much love? Because people got sick of how much love it got that other games should've had instead. It didn't do anything to warrant love.

What do you mean? Nintendo had to get that character from SE (the end of the credits even mentioned him as a copyright of Square Enix).

i mean that if nintendo found an agreement with squaresoft for using geno so randomly,i think they can also reach an agrement for releasing super mario rpg on virtual console or use mario rpg character in other ways

and so it begins.

i don't really like paper mario either, but that's mostly because of the aweful n64 graphics. I'd probably like the Gamecube version I think.

I can also see a lot of the weaknesses in SMRPG now, and I know that a large part of the reason i like it still is nostalgia.

I'll play. I haven't gone through it in a year or so. :D

One of my favorite games ever. It's as easy and accessible to play today as it was 12 years ago. I love this game to death.

re: thread title change- dear Amir0x, you are a cunt (this is the most true thing I have ever said)

anyway, time has made me like this game far, far less. after playing the Mario and Luigi games, I thought, "man, these are no good compared to SMRPG," but, really, they're just as good. not bad, but kind of boring.

it is maybe worth noting that I have not played the Paper Mario games.

I do really enjoy the Paper Mario games (Super Paper Mario included), but I still hold Super Mario RPG on a MUCH higher plateau of gaming than any of the Paper Mario games.

SMRPG was okay, but Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is still my favorite mario rpg. No other Mario game captured the Mario/Luigi/etc mythos like that game, and the gameplay was great. Never liked any of the paper marios.

The Paper Mario games were better executed examples of a mario RPG but I don't get the hate for this game. Loved it to pieces at the time of it's release.

The only good thing about the game is pretty much the OST (<3 Shimomura) and even then it'll be good irregardless of the game housing it. Add to the fact the OST wasn't really Mario-y in any sense of the term; which falls precisely in line with pretty much every other aspect to the game Mario and friends guest starred in.

Good thing I only paid 15 bucks new for my copy of Generic Square RPG guest starring Mario and friends. But at least the music is good.

Everyone knows that super mario RPG is by far one of the best RPG's of all time. I'm still thinking about the game, and till now I cannot identify a single flaw in its design. It's up there with crono trigger, fallout and the like as being as perfect as an RPG can be.

Easy, shallow and short for starters. Crappy platforming, even for an RPG. Extremely by the books and doesn't really do much to differential itself from other RPGs released around that time (at least Chrono Trigger mixxed it up a bit). And no, pressing buttons while you wait for animations to finish does not count. Oh and also, it's one of the first games to popularize the whole crappy '3 character party' that is used by many future rpgs (at least CT compensated for this with Double and Triple techs).

And this is not even touching the poor handling of the license.

In other words, that's not quality you're feeling for the game, it's nostalgia.

Fantastic music... Yoko Shimomura kicks ass. I enjoyed the game for what its worth but it's arguably very simplistic, probably even more so by today's standards. Did you know this was the best selling RPG ever in the States before FF7.

This reminds me I need to play Paper Mario and the GC Paper Mario, I've only played SMRPG and Super Paper.
