Falcom is recruiting new game designers, programmers, graphic designers, sound designers, etc. They're looking for talented people and want to allow them to make "whatever they desire". In particular they tweeted using Tokyo Xanadu as an example, looking for people who "want to make Smartphone games", or "want to make Browser games", or even "want to make MMORPGS".

Take that as you will.

Isn't Xanadu coming out this year? I don't think this recruit tweet is related to the game..
Well we'll see about that.

Edit: Wow three mods in a row.

I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about this.

I love Falcom, so hopefully whatever they end up doing ends up being great, be it on mobile or whatever.

They're not recruiting for this game, but they're using it as an example of those kinds of games. It's very strange, although I suppose it's possible that they plan to make something "like" Tokyo Xanadu that's a smartphone/browser/MMO game, or a companion game, or something.

Yeah I'm sure the tweet which clearly says "Tokyo Xanadu" and attaches a picture of it, has nothing to do with Tokyo Xanadu. Yup.

Ummmm maybe Tokyo Xanadu is a Card Game? =D

Or maybe Tokyo Xanadu is a template they want to use for future smartphone and browser games.

All of GAF's most hated platforms in one. The only way this could get more delicious is if Falcom had straight-up said "want to make cheap mobage card game garbage".

Well, wasn't Tokyo Xanadu supposed to be at least on some Playstation platform since it was in Dengeki? At least it's not exclusively on mobile.

Sad

I dont hate mobile games but their is still a serious gap and lack of effort in the space....

Not to mention a lot of games are falling into standards and norms created by other popular games

It just sucks when I try yet another game and only to have it be completely predictable and transparent mechanically

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

I'm glad all I care about from Falcom are Ys and Trails.

It's fine if they make Tokyo Xanadu a freemium DLC action RPG for PC and mobile phones... Or even Sorcerian Next for mobile phones that's f2p.

Assuming we take this at face value, it is not implausible that if they're trying to launch a sort of MMORPG in the current climate of Japanese gaming, that it would try to be platform agnostic, especially for a smaller developer which wouldn't be able to support individual platforms differently. If it is developed as something which can run on browsers and smartphones, it wouldn't be a stretch to see it also running on Vita/PS3/PS4 (where the Falcon fanbase is), or even WiiU/3DS if they want to.

Then again, Level5 had this idea with Wonderflick, and it... never took off. Lol.

Was Wonderflick even good?

Well, I liked the Nolan Batman movies, and that ended up with Man of Steel.

I liked Martin Campbell's work on Goldeneye and Casino Royale, and we ended up with Green Lantern.

Oh dear!

I was under the impression that Wonderflick was a decent game and was supposed to be localized

Tanked hard huh?

It's not abnormal for Japanese devs to make mobile games. They are very lucrative in Japan.

Well at least Ys is still on consoles :(

I'm not entirely against mobile games but I'm, understandably, a lot more weary to get excited about one versus a console title.

Who knows, maybe it will be an interesting mobile mmo.

Companies do what they have to in order to survive, I suppose.

So much skeptism.

Falcom is about one of the few devs that I trust their 'attempts' in mobile to not be a nickel-dime F2P 'we want the PazuruDora audience', but rather something that is good despite being a mobile game.

I look forward to the next Vlambeer game for the same reason, regardless of platform.

Isn't that better than...99.99% of apps? Possibly a couple extra 9s?
Yeah, but generally with mobile you tend to aim pretty high.

Like most companies focus on getting into the top 100 at least for things they feel are good contributors to their overall financials.

It's probably still profitable where it is, but it's not really a gamechanger or a big banner project in the same way as the types of mobile games you see publishers trumpeting about.

Falcom's in good shape to transition if the console collapse in Japan truly becomes major/terminal. They've maintained profitability and aren't bloated.

The fact that they were a PC house gives me hope they won't be stupid.

I'm not even a "oh no, F2P is instantly bad", we've had multiple games where the microtransactions are perfectly well, even on mobile.

My problem is that being mobile means that I will probably never play it (don't have nor plan to have a smartphone) and I have no idea how likely that game is to come over here.

Oh wow, they recently removed Saki Momiyama's interview :(. Gotta save that before it disappears from the Internet!

As for that tweet, I believe it's related to this: http://www.esterior.net/2013/02/falcom-launches-innovation-unit-for-smartphone-tablet-and-pc-game-development/. That's said, I think it's too early to jump to conclusions, considering how people is already jumping the gun in this thread. The "MMO" they are referring to is probably Akatsuki no Kiseki (though IIRC that's being developed by a seperate company).

I'm glad all I care about from Falcom are Ys and Trails.
See, this is why Falcom isn't deviating from Ys and Kiseki games anytime soon, which is a shame because Falcom made some really great games that were in neither series. :(
