Since September 2013 Famitsu is estimating digital sales in Japan, based on its own research. I think we need a database with the accomulated total, and that's the purpose of thid thread.

First of all, you need to be aware of:

1. This digital sales are from September 2013. There's no data available before that time.
2. November 2013 sales are missing. That means we have no data for games like God Eater 2, Lightning Returns or Project Mirai 2. Moreover, sales for other games, like Monster Hunter 4, are also missing on that month.
3. This digital sales come from a monthly retail and digital Top 30 Ranking. That means that if the game doesn't chart in that ranking, there's no way to know its digital sales. So, a game can sell decently digital, but if it doesn't reach the 30 position in that ranking, there's no way to know how well or bad is selling digital.
So, we should consider this numbers as the minimum digital sales, instead of a total sales.
4. This thread will be updated every month. Last update is September 2014 (new monthly updates games in bold)

I was one of those mh4 downloads, easily the most value for money on 3ds. Online was incredible. Having the game always on the 3ds instead of having to switch carts is a bonus too.

It's a pretty popular game, and it's ideal to have installed on your system. Since hunts are short, having it on your system at all times is very convenient when you've got some time to kill during a commute. You'd also be playing for many many months, so it's possible other games you'd like to play will come out in this timeframe. You can swap out whatever new game you get, but you still have HM for when you feel the need or you have someone around that wants to play. Digital distribution aren't all that big in Japan, so 280k is a very good number.

It was sold out for a time as well, so buying the eShop version was the only way to hop on the train ASAP.

So does the west - you dont see major sales for digital retail games if they arent part of a bomba/steam sale. In japan they dont tend to often drop the price for digital copies on the mayor releases.

Famitsu counts download cards in their physical sales iirc, these are pure downloads.

Remember that the 3DS has pretty much all of the 'big' Japanese titles, and by far the biggest install base. If you look at these numbers as a percentage of their overall LTDs, the picture looks different.

For example, I release my game and sell 10 copies on the Nintendo Playbox, 4 of which are digital. I also sell 5 copies on the Sony GameCircle, of which 3 are digital. The e-shop version would chart higher, even though I have a higher engagement rate on PSN.

Complicated shit, man.
