Market Share

System 2008 (2007)

NDS - 37.3% (52%)
Wii - 26.6% (12.1%)
PSP - 13.9% (10.3%)
PS2 - 12.3% (19.4%)
PS3 - 7.4% (3.5%)
360 - 2.2% (1.5%)
ETC - 0.2% (1.3%)

Key Points

- Nintendo Long Sellers: Some Nintendo games in the top 30 for 2008 are from as far back as 2005 (MKDS and ACWW), and quite a few are from 2006 (Wii Sports, Wii Play, NSMB).

- Monster Hunter PSP: Monster Hunter is quite a hit on the PSP, and 2nd G's opening week of 823,265 outdid the original version's opening week of 746,313.

- Wii Ware To Establish New Distribution?: Wii Ware, launched on March 25 with a few titles, can become a big factor in the game market industry and may increase as time goes by. The PS3 and 360 also have their download services that can contribute to this download market.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

something about a psp which regularly plays wii fit and something about monsters and stuff.
I know about Monster Hunter. But the PSP has been on the heels of the DS for quite a while now, no way one game can turn a whole platform around. Or else you'd think the PS3 could spar with the Wii in the future.

Changing tastes?

Sony must be so confused.

PSP: Yay!
PS3: What the hell did we do?
:lol Well to be fair, the PSP wasn't doing that hot in comparison to the DS in the beginning at all either.

At its current price, perhaps. Still not a single price drop since launch tho...
I was being sarcastic. It sold a million and Nintendo has taken their teams off DS to make Wii games. There's bound to be a transition period before third parties pick up the gauntlet.

Sorry - I just see that kind of comment so often in MC threads (along with other apparently serious ones about PSP "challenging" the DS) that I took it on face value :D

What ... happened to make PSP jump so high?

PSP Slim was released. The PSP has, for a long time now, not been selling primarily as a video gaming machine. Therefore the current consistently high sales have very little to do with any particular piece of UMD software.

DS has reached saturation point..

I know you're being sarcastic, but in case anyone is reading and thinks this:
The DS is selling better "at its saturation point" than the PS2 ever did at any point in Japan. So if the DS is saturated, the PS2 must have been saturated its whole lifespan.

To be fair most households need only one PS2, where as some requires multiple DS.

Thanks. Crazy to see MKDS and ACWW on there.

PSP: cheap, small, recently redesigned
PS3: none of the above (yet)
PS3 to become portable confirmed.

I don't think that's the reason it's selling better than PS2 though.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them release PS3 Slim sooner rather than later

Sure, me neither. It won't ever get as small as a PSP though. That was my point: You can't compare the portable market to the home console market like it was done here.

While the number of softwares on offer are not as high in quantity, PSP has been getting some good softwares consistently. It builds up over time and gets to the point where it is now.

Of course not, but I think PS3's size is a big turn-off for the Japanese market. Making it slimmer would provide a good boost

Sure, it won't give it a boost comparable to PSPS&L though. Home console size may be important in Japan but not as important as portability of a portable console.

the ps3 will probably end up like the psp. a rough two years and then a huge pickup.
PSP never had it as rough as PS3 is having it.

Pretty much lol. Drop the price and the size, and the Japanese will flock to it! :D

FFXIII, MGS4 and GT5 wouldn't hurt either!
