Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I'm really glad bttb is a full member now :D

Also looks like PH crossed 900k but I doubt it can muster the sales to pass the next milestone.

I think Nintendo needs to start releasing their really old stuff at discounted prices at this point. That's one particular point I never agreed with Nintendo on as a consumer: the resistance of price drops. I think Capcom is a much better company in that regard. Even Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is at a budget price these days.

Will get to putting this stuff in Garaph, but a few hundred things do take a bit more time to process.
180. [WII] Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Nintendo) 74,647
A gain of less than 2K since the middle of the year, so it's not going to catch up to the first Metroid Prime's 78K.
185. [WII] Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen (Nintendo) 73,449
When this dropped out of the Top 30 it was at 63K, so it's gained about 10K. This does seem to make it the best-selling Fatal Frame game, though there's some chance Fatal Frame II sold enough to get past 73K, but not the few extra K to make it on the 2004 Top 500.
417. [WII] Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon (Square Enix) 26,916 / 99,626
Missed it by that much!

Damn this sold more than I had remembered
We haven't seen this one at all since last year's Top 500, and it more than doubled. But what's more shocking? The PS2 NiGHTS remake that released in February 2008 and sold 6.8K its first week doesn't appear to have made the list. So apparently it sold less than 12K through the rest of the year.

I saw NiGHTS for like 980 yen last week :lol

No one should agree with that point as a consumer, unless dick sucking is their livelihood.

No clue why they put the two games on different platforms.

Ehh, I can see where Iwata is coming from. Even years back on GAF I was wondering why companies were starting to add content to their budget rereleases, therefore making waiting around for a $20 release the wiser course of action than buying the initial $50 release.

As a consumer of course paying a lot isn't the greatest, but on the other hand I know I have no reason to hold back on getting a new title, because it's not going to do me any good to wait a year.

Thanks, bttb! :)

From my database,

Prior to the Top 500 update:
PS3 3rd-party sales through 2008 - 5.82m
WII 3rd-party sales through 2008 - 5.23m

After the Top 500 update:
PS3 3rd-party sales through 2008 - 6.03m
WII 3rd-party sales through 2008 - 5.90m

So the platform breakdown has been done. But since I've currently got them ordered by platform and then date, here's an even further one splitting things into year of game release.

Code:
     2004 2005 2006 2007 2008
Wii 4 13 49
GBA 2
DS 1 6 9 55 155
PS2 1 4 17 50
PS3 7 36
PSP 16 51
X360 2 22

To mention some of the real oldies:
*The 2 GBA games are Pokémons.
*DS's 2004 game is SM64DS.
*PS2's 2005 is the Hot Shots Golf 4 best price reprint.

Finally Famitsu has Yoshis Island DS at one million, too :).

260. [NDS] Dramatic Dungeon: Sakura Taisen - Kimi Arugatame (Sega) 50,940

It's gotten to 50,000?? Wow, I thought it was dead at 20! Very nice! ^_^

It's not unusual for there to be games that appear on the Top 500 but didn't appear in a weekly Top 30 or vice-versa; it's a matter of different types of legs among the lesser games. This 500 list has added 53 games to my database, though some probably could've been picked up by paying more attention to the various extra lists that we get from time to time.

What's especially fun is that 9 of these new games are 2007 slooow burners, so we actually also can tell what they'd sold by the end of last year. To pick the tiniest 2007 example, a Best version of MGS3 released in late November 2007 and only sold 3K by the end of the year. Through 2008 it's up to 62K, though, so I take it MGS4 gave it a decent bump.

Here's how my total software numbers were affected. As always these aren't quite comprehensive, but the Top 500s give everything a decent push in that direction. Nothing TOO surprising here; the DS in massive lead, PS2/PSP/Wii fairly close to each other, and PS3 and X360 being further back pretty much fits with the number of titles each had in the list.
Code:
         BEFORE AFTER CHANGE
DS 114,137,003 119,815,855 5,678,852
Wii 27,635,808 28,732,578 1,096,770
PS2 175,522,817 176,849,279 1,326,462
PS3 9,347,687 9,749,581 401,894
PSP 26,822,445 27,934,928 1,112,483
X360 4,429,928 4,540,406 110,478

Just a few other things I noticed, though there's so much one could possibly pick out:

With new data for Best releases on Wii and PS2, the combined Resident Evil 4 SKUs pass a million.
0

Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen had a strong year, but not quite strong enough to hit 3 million. If they can scrape onto even the bottom of next year's Top 500, though, they should. Currently at 2.986 million.

Each Chocobo game seems to do worse than the one before it.

Patapon blew up. As of last week my numbers would tell you that Patapon was at 28K and its sequel at 35K. Thanks to this year's Top 500, though, we see the original at 90K, its budget rerelease at 17K, and Patapon 2 at 62K.

Though Radiant Mythology 2 has since passed it as the best-selling post-PS2 Tales, these new numbers show that Tales of Innocence actually made it quite past that ~200K point a few of them stopped at.

20080525 PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (BEST) - 27,556 (+7K)
<MGS4 released>
20080629 PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (BEST) - 43,529 (+16K)
20080727 PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (BEST) - 50,553 (+7K)

I've realized that there's something really wrong with how M-C or Famitsu tracks Taiko no Tatsujin 2 PSP.

M-C has the game at 42k (108k LTD) in 2007 and 63k (150k LTD) in 2008
312. [PSP] Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2（Bandai Namco） 06/09/07 42,253
208. [PSP] Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2 (Bandai Namco) 63,263 / 150,344

But then, you look at Famitsu 2007/8 TOP 500 and the game is nowhere seen and its last known LTD sales are 59k

11 Electronic Arts 1,028,044 105 1.6%
- Famitsu data provided by NIS.

This specific pairing really amuses me, mainly for the sales/product ratio. Go Layton! Pokémon's even more mind-boggling in that respect, but, well, it's Pokémon.

I had no idea Bully was published by Bethesda in Japan.

Yeah, they have a Japanese branch. IIRC, it has published 50 Cent:BitS and it's going to publish WET.

Thanks for all the work bttb!

Check out "Eiyuu Densetsu Sora no Kiseki FC (Legend of Heroes)" for PSP, too.
