Famitsu Sales: 2010 Top 100

Ok confesssion time, as I was comparing the numbers for spirit tracks between famitsu and mc, it seemed like they didn't agree on the week 28/12/2009, then it hit me that Famitsu has 52 weeks for 2010 and MC has 53 weeks as I remembered the whole ordeal over the PSP/DS hardware situation. God I felt stupid, but I'll be damned if it wasn't fun. It's also weird that Famitsu and MC hardware numbers for Nintendo hardware on that particular week was very different.

Wii 216,933 163,855
DSL 16,493 17,388
DSi 227,379 92,461
DSiLL 0 70,643
PS2 5,111 4,023
PS3 131,523 114,368
PSP 129,438 132,911
PSPGo 4,840 3,903
X360 6,937 6,878

Seriously, 227k and 92k? That's a pretty big discrepancy

It's crazy how different the Western and Eastern tastes in games are.

Out of that top 100, there might be 10 games there that I have any desire to play.

Everything else just looks terrible and uninteresting to me.

Don't think you're speaking for every western person there. I'm from NY, and there'd be even less than 10 games I'd want to play on a Western game top 100 list.

The first two were made by NST, but I can't find any info except "Nintendo" on Mini-Lan Mayhem.

Good catch on Dead Rising 2!

So now we're up to 4 (maybe 5) out of 100.

It was made by NST.

Still I don't think it's useful to consider DKCR and MvsDK4 as "western games". They are Nintendo games to the buying public.

25 of these 31 games belong to either of the following franchises: Mario (6), Monster Hunter (3), Pokemon (5), Dragon Quest (5), Wii ___ [Sports/Fit/Party, etc] (6)

All 31 games were published by either Nintendo, Capcom or Square Enix

And people wonder why nobody new can "crack" japan sales wise. There's nothing to crack. It's about as old-boys-club as a product for the masses is ever going to get.

I kinda disagree. Monster Hunter is considered a new franchise that "cracked" Japan.

Nier and Third Birthday didn't seem to do very well :(

Really surprised to see a MGS game doing so well in Japan.

?
MGS4

Useless fact: Comparing the mid- and full-year Top 100 lists, the number of games in common is... 51.

Keep in mind Third Birthday released December 22, so this is just its first week sales.

Monster Hunter has been around since the PS2 generation though, so it's not super "new"... though Level-5 has been pretty successful in 'cracking' Japan - Inazuma Eleven, Layton, etc.

So....how's that PSP thing-y working out for ya, SEGA?

93. [PS3] Valkyria Chronicles (Sega) 141,589

Hmmm...

VC on the PSP sold 15,000 copies more on the PSP than on the PS3 in Japan. On the other hand, the market for PSP games has gone down the drain in Europe and the VS while a PS3 version of VC2 would have done good business outside of Japan. Great thinking, Sega.

Hmmm...

The development costs are probably dramatically lower, which means higher profits even with less sales. But I agree with the sentiment of wanting the VC franchise back on PS3 (and 360).

And I, for one, welcome the next Metal Gear handheld direction.

I'd personally agree, but with such slim pickings we have to take everything we get to even make it to 5 out of 100. :lol

Western award shows might willfully ignore Japanese titles, but at least the general gaming public seems a bit more open. >_> Or maybe Japanese developers are just better at catering to Western tastes (plus there's that whole "the entire history of console videogames being predominantly Japanese" thing...). :p

But honestly, 5 out of 100, c'mon Japan.
