I still don’t understand why Japanese have abandoned consoles or is it they’ve not abandoned consoles but PlayStation.

What is the retail price of the PS4 in Japan? It feels like for some reason Sony is more than fine with never dropping the price of the console and just accepting lower sales. I mean a PS4 Pro is still $400 in the US. The damn PS5 is launching in 2 months with a SKU that is $400 - how does that make any sense at all? The PS4 is $300 - 7 years later a whopping $100 price drop.

Its like Sony got to a consoles sales level and was like "yeah we are good, just keep the price the same and move on."

Good point. However Japan haven’t been enthusiastic about consoles since the PS2. It’s handhelds that seem to be doing very well there.

Makes you wonder why Sony is even trying to stay in the Japanese market. Home consoles are dead there.

Yeah, but am I wrong in thinking that Switch the handheld is selling and not Switch the console.

You're not wrong, though Ring Fit sales do indicate that some are using it at least partially as a home console. Part of me thinks PS5 will do fine there, but I guess it depends on what the Switch Pro really ends up being.

Makes a good case for xCloud gaming seeing how consoles aren't going to be the future there. Perhaps MS can work with a local cell phone company to arrange a deal to get a phone and game pass.

In Japan PlayStation is very reliant on third party support that targets a certain type of gamer and most of the big third party franchises are in decline. Switch is doing well because it has franchises that appeal to a wide range of demographics and gamer types. It helps that the Switch hardware itself is pretty appealing (unlike the Wii U).

Sony is dead on arrival with PS5 unless Dragon Quest and Pokemon are total PS5 exclusives.

You’re probably right, but do you think if Switch was a console and didn’t have a handheld mode it would have the same sales?

I don't know, but I'm not the right person to answer this question because I honestly never understood why people would want to differentiate a home console from a handheld console. They're both gaming specific hardware, they literally exist to serve the same purpose.

Im surprised Sony and MS haven't just launched an "Xbox S" version of their consoles but as a handheld at this point

The MSRP has been largely the same in Japan. I don't think Sony is even trying to sell PS4's over there. Also, part of why console sales are low is due to the work culture and how the Japanese commute very frequently. The Switch provides that happy medium where you can play it as a home console, but you can also play on the go.

Honestly, the PS4 is a missed opportunity. It had a bigger launch than the PS3 in Japan, but then it fell behind launch aligned because there were simply no games on the PS4 that appealed to the Japanese audience. Had Sony actually tried to get more Japanese-centric titles for the PS4 in its first year, it would be doing much better now.

They are living in a different world over there
US chart without Nintendo Digital sales included vs other games with digital sales inclusion
US(The biggest dedicated gaming market)

Germany(3rd biggest dedicated gaming market)

The you have France where Nintendo softwares pretty much occupied all the top spots.

Top 5 biggest dedicated gaming market
1. US- Nintendo Domination
2. Japan - Nintendo ultimate Domination
3. Germany - Nintendo Domination
4. Uk - PlayStation domination
5. France - Nintendo Domination.

1st world countries - Nintendo
Developing and 3rd world countries - PlayStation.

It' s surprising how many xbox one x has sold in comparison to the xbox one s. I would have figured the s console would have destroyed the x.

Never really followed these sales threads, but holy shit at Switch wiping both PS4's in in lifetime sales in such a short time. I genuinely never realised. Always assumed Sony would be leading Japan due to how long the console has been on the market and the number of "Japanese" type games released on the system.

More like Nintendo and PC Land. The PC has been exploding in Japan over the past 5 years, thanks to eSports. According to Famitsu's White Paper from 2018 there were 15 million PC gamers (massive 50% growth over 2017) and 23 million console/handheld gamers, now even the japanese government is pushing for eSport as they plan to boost economy through it.

They're slowly becoming the 2nd South Korea. eSports crazy PC gamers.
Holy shit this is nuts.

PS4 had Persona 5/Royal, DQXI, FFXV, FFVIIR, RE2 remake, Nier Automata, Shadow of Colossus Remake, The Last Guardian, KH3, DMC 5 and probably more that i'm forgetting right now, if these games weren't enough to make the Japanese buy a playstation 4 i don't know what will.
I believe home consoles are dead in Japan.

Japanese apartment size is a real thing LOL I've got a desktop pc, a Switch, a monitor, routers etc and space is tight. I couldn't fit a PS5 anywhere in my place.
