Now that the Top 20 of 2021 has overtaken the Top 20 of 2020, I will begin to include New Horizon into the comparison
  • Momotaro is heading towards 900K to 1 million result this Quarter, much stronger than Smash Ultimate the top performing evergreen in Q1 on the Switch, which managed 638.769 during Q1 2019
  • Ring Fit will be close to doubling it's result compared to last year when it had severe shortages
  • New Horizon should end up at around 400K for the Quarter
  • The new release this week Bowser's Fury performed worse than I anticipated but will have no problems surpassing 600K this Quarter
  • Bunch of evergreens will see YoY growth
  • Sakuna continues to hold very well it's already Marvelous Best selling title in Japan with digital, but it won't hold the title long as Olive Town launches very soon and will break all previous records

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Yearly:
2017 - 1.103.744
2018 - 450.206
2019 - 628.712
2020 - 798.174
2021 - 215.311 (45 weeks to go)
  • Can this year Top Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's launch year? If the current growth trajectory is maintained... yes it can - which is absolutely insane. Game will surpass 4.5 million physical this year without breaking a sweat.

Olive Town, Bravely Default 2 and Monster Hunter Rise as the big hitters left to launch this Quarter, this has the potential to be the best Q1 of all time in Japan surpassing DS previous record of 1.9 million hardware sales. Personally I won't be surprised if the Monster Hunter Rise launch brings hardware sales of around 300K, the main question is can the other 5 weeks maintain an average of around 130K?

Crazy how much more sales third-parties are making this year compared to Q1 last year; with 6 weeks left to go we are already over 300K more sales with Olive Town, Bravely Default 2 and MONSTER HUNTER RISE launching by the end of the Quarter... Probably around 4 million software sales by 3rd Parties in Q1

Compare that to the Top 20 for 3rd Parties in 2020... the difference is massive - Monster Hunter Rise alone is likely to surpass the combined sales of the Top 20 3rd Party sellers of 2020.

Could we expect Mario at the Olympics to make a comeback this year? The event being delayed surely hurt it's sales.

I kinda hate DLC. With these numbers how could you blame Nintendo for not trying more Mario kart 8 dlc?

I think the buyers must be the US Army families stationed in Japan.
There isn’t any stock available.
Demand is of course lower in JP, but the XSX isn’t readily available either. After checking out some stores they were sold out. Amazon JP only has third party sellers with prices starting at 80,000 yen. The normal retail price is 49,980 yen (about 55,000 including tax).
The lowest price I’ve seen on auction sites for a used XSX is 65,000 yen.

The other interesting 3rd Party game this week is Little Nightmares 2, seems that Bandai Namco also shipped a small amount for the launch and the game is going to have stock problems on the Switch. I'm thinking that the Switch version's stock is only around 20-25K at best, more likely it's actually 15K. Kinda sad for Bandai that this is their biggest game announced for Q1, no wonder there is internal restructuring.

[NSW] Little Nightmares: Complete Edition (2018) - 10.401
[PS4] Little Nightmares: Complete Edition (2018) - 8.488

[NSW] Little Nightmares II (Bandai Namco) - 24.470 / NEW <80-100%>
[PS4] Little Nightmares II (Bandai Namco) - 11.163 / NEW <80-100%>

Great result for Little Nightmares 2,
The actual stock for the Switch version was at the upper limit I anticipated likely shy of 30K, seems Bandai Namco was able to restock the game for it's second week;
Overall I can see it surpassing 100K on the Switch considering it's low price and lack of competition. No Bandai Namco games revealed at the direct, so it's increasingly likely that they won't have any other games launch in Q1.

I believe that the only Switch game we know of right now is Digimon Survive which doesn't have a launch date, otherwise they are working on mainly PS4/PS5 exclusives like Scarlet Nexus, Elden Ring & Tails of Arise

I've spoken before about this but they are not in a good position and their market size has contracted by a pretty huge amount from 2019 to 2020.

Bandai Namco Top 10 2020:
  1. [PS4/NSW] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 - 280.183
  2. [NSW] Fishing Spirits - 207.472
  3. [PS4] Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. MaxiBoost On - 168.710
  4. [PS4] Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot - 163.029
  5. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! - 133.978
  6. [PS4] Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris - 94.681
  7. [NSW] Disney Tsum Tsum Festival - 60.492
  8. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythmic Adventure Pack - 52.621
  9. [NSW/PS4] My Hero Academia: One's Justice 2 - 44.105
  10. [NSW] Jump Force: Deluxe Edition - 41.411
TOTAL: 1.246.682

Bandai Namco Top 10 2019:
  1. [NSW] Fishing Spirits - 336.995
  2. [PS4] Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown - 220.195
  3. [PS4/NSW] Super Robot Wars T - 159.513
  4. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! - 150.167
  5. [PS4/NSW] SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays - 146.912
  6. [NSW] Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission - 145.720
  7. [PS4] Jump Force - 130.293
  8. [NSW] Disney Tsum Tsum Festival - 125.498
  9. [NSW] Doraemon Story of Seasons - 112.104
  10. [PS4/NSW] Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition - 109.464
TOTAL: 1.636.861

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4
which combined across the PS4/NSW was their top selling game, their other anime games My Hero Academia 2/Captain Tsubasa that we multi-plat under-performed. Everything else was a bunch of PS4 exclusives last year that under performed, one late port that did about as well as a late port should, a 3DS Taiko port, and their best selling SKU ended up being Fishing Spirits which was also their best selling game in 2019.

Now if you were to add a Switch SKU at launch for the likes of DBZ: Kakarot, MSG: Extreme vs MaiBoost or SAO: Alicization Lycoris I'm pretty sure they would have maintained their position from 2019 or even seen some growth. Maybe there would be late ports of DBZ: Kakarot, MSG: Extreme vs MaiBoost or SAO: Alicization Lycoris for Q1/Golden Week but they will perform similarly to Jump Force did last year.

So far with what we know about in 2021, they will see further decline. Their Top 10 games are unlikely to surpass 1 million especially if they are banking on PS4/PS5 "AAA" exclusives

The Direct pretty much cemented what we already know about Japanese third parties when it comes to Switch.

Konami, Koei Tecmo, Capcom and Square Enix are on board. Sega and Bandai Namco are not (yet).
