I don't see why people automaticly think a FFVII remake will "save" the PS3 in Japan. It can be the rumored Endless Crisis: FFVII, a DQ title or even a new IP.

Guess we'll know soon, tho.

That's because FFVII is so huge that a remake in HD will make the PS3 as a physical entity look tiny in comparison. So small that it will appear as if it would actually fit into Japanese people's houses.

And the price. That'll look smaller too.

metal slug 6 doesn't get the credit it deserves. it's kind of ugly, but it has some amazing battles -- i've never seen anything like the intensity and subtlety of some of the enemy waves it sends at you. once i'd figured out that fight right before the second boss, i knew it was something special.

that sort of thing probably won't work on ds -- even psp struggled with it -- but if it's from the same team as slug 6, it should be good stuff
I fucking hope so.

So right now, PS3 is looking like:

DEC = GT5p
JAN = DMC4/WKS
FEB = maaybe MGS4, or if not March.

It's a good start to push sales for the system, but it sucks that they took this freaking long and that there's absolutely jack shit until Dec (for JPN). Plus they need more titles to fill out from March on.
you totally forgot the first really big RPG for the PS3. WKS

Bullshit. If that was the case, they would have released a good bunch of fighting games already!

CLANNAD's VA version has been out on the PS2 for over a year now, do they really expect people to want this again in HD? It's not even the porn version 3;

Btw is KyoAni doing this autumn Clannad?
Both the movie and the TV Series debut this Fall. So spring is a perfect time after everyone has been exposed to the story to try it out for themselves.

Higher resolution than the PC version, new audience, other improvements, and did someone say pre-order goods? It'll sell.

And plus there's always only been an all-ages version, so nothing new there. The point here is a company has finally taken the first step into next-gen, now it's time to see who will follow.

Exactly, it's already out and on the PS2. I'm just saying, it's not like it's HD hentai or something, does a remake of an old visual novel (non-porn version) with increased resolution really entice an audience into buying a console they seem to loathe as a culture when it's already available on something much more accessible? Wouldn't we be more likely to see a reflux of PS2 and PC version sales after the anime than the 360 version?

Those must be some damn good pre-order goods if it would get people to jump in, and even then I could see some people just buying it for the goods and throwing the disc onto a shelf without ever even owning the console to play it on.

Clannad is a bad example since it was originally designed to be non-porn. I don't remember if Key actually released a version with sex scenes.

They've always struck me as a studio who dealt with the ero portion of ero games only because that was the only way people would buy their stuff.

Why would someone get anything other than the superior version? By the way, I don't expect this to actually sell systems, it's basically another token for the current 360 crowd, which already leans towards such games.

Besides, the same argument can be made for Key's other games. Both AIR and Kanon have been thrice ported (a fourth is coming!), yet they still sell relatively decently. Each system is a new opportunity to sell to an extremely devoted crowd.

And as I've said, it's not just the game that makes this exciting, it's the possibilities that it opens up. If the publishers don't intend to release on the PS2 forever, then they will need to choose their next platform.

Sales are sales, no matter the reason. :D

Hmm, I think your right there, looks like Clannad never had an adult version. But that has nothing to do with the fact that there's virtually no reason for anyone to want this. Even if you do have a 360, the PC and PS2 versions of the game are probably cheaper by now, does having HD in this particular genre (of all genres) really make a difference?

I'll agree with that. Agarest Senki is another one, but it's not so much pure visual novel.

That certainly wouldn't be surprising. It'd be even less surprising if Halo 3 went largely unscathed despite having issues that other games just can't seem to get away, like say not being all that different from the norm.

I'm confused as to what you're saying. Are you saying Halo3 has issues other games do not have? Or are you saying that Halo3 does not have issues that other games have?

Halo set the bar for this generation's FPS games. So saying that Halo is not different from the norm would make sense. The N64's Goldeneye redefined first person shooters for consoles. Then HaloCE came out and raised the bar even more. Right now, I would argue we haven't seen the next game to raise that bar again. But the reason I brought this up is because most first person shooters flop in comparison with Halo. So to say that it isn't different from the norm is spot on. Halo made the norm what it is right now for console first person shooters. The reason you think it is like everything else is because so many other games are trying to build upon the magic in Halo.

Not particularily for anime ;/

Though I was this close to picking up the AIR box set 3;

There's a difference though, a lot of movies and shows and whatnot have heavy visual emphasis, as well as are some game genres. Visual novels are more about the story content/text, with the pictures as primarily just a visual aid for the imagination, like the illustrations in a light novel.

AIR was nice for an upconversion, but the remade OP was the only part that was worth it.

Visual novels/ADVs are like any other genre, they benefit from advanced technology. You can't imagine how stagnant the PC market has become. Almost every company is content with releasing games in 800x600... when played full screen on a higher resolution desktop+monitor, the aliasing and noise are awfully present. For a game that relies on its art and its storytelling, it's an important aspect. Sega's sound novel, Imabikisou is going after the same thing. It's primary medium of entertainment is the reading, but the use of HD movies and CGs contribute greatly to the atmosphere and experience.

Indeed it would be nice, and I can see how it would be appreciated for a new game. But in an old game that's already available in so many more accessible mediums like this one? A significant amount of people (not myself of course) are still arguing that even movies and video games aren't worth it in HD. It's hard enough to convince the world of HD for movies already, going to be even harder to justify it for still-frame CGs.

I for one would love to see higher production values into creating a much higher quality of ADVs out there, but I have a feeling that as that happens they eventually stop being ADVs and just more like other game genres. Which isn't at all a bad thing, but the fact is they exist the way they are for a reason.

The other Key ports were the same way or worse, since they won't be as complete as this one. And it won't be hard to justify at all, not in the market it's playing at.

Some super advanced cel shading and AI is the future of the stagnant ADV genre.
