8k more, but yes these games seem to have extra poor legs in Japan
Last time it appeared at famitsu top 100 for the first half of the year at 110k. It sold 4k between july and december. I guess it was where people got confused.

Either way, those are awful legs. Still, with digital it might be at 140k, which is not that bad. I don't think this game will have Xenoblade legs.

Fates vs Awakening is even more impressive when you consider that awakening launched prior to the eshop offering digital versions retail 3ds titles, giving it the advantage of 100% retail sales at launch.

Does my heart good to see Fire Emblem Fates do so well. Finally proves the naysayers of the Awakening/Fates formula wrong.

The "formula" actually includes decent marketing so damn straight I'm glad. Best selling one in Japan is still Mystery of the Emblem (the best SNES FE, so good taste there). This isn't including digital numbers if I'm not mistaken, so the revenue numbers are probably quite a bit higher given the business model.

That being said, FE has so many styles and flavors of it's core gameplay, I hope it's something that it continues to change into the future. Better something adventurous than safe.

just to say, Idea Factory published only otome/adventure games on vita and they globally sold more than 125k, best title is around 20-25k

I wonder if SE's PS4 bet will pay off in Japan.

Seems like the final salvo for the PS4 there. Maybe VR too? But Japan is very price sensitive historical, so who knows.

It does not show those who "double dipped" digitally, plus the special edition with 2 versions in one cart counts as one copy only.

wrong, Famitsu counts it as 2 (they are also the only of the 3 trackers to not have the special edition separate, but that's another matter)

Yes, it's not going to be very accurate for the lower-ranked publishers, due to it biasing in favour of a small number of big releases (e.g. Rockstar) over a big number of small releases (e.g. Idea Factory), hence the note at the end. I'd be confident in saying it gives a reasonable idea of the overall picture in terms of platforms, though, and for the top few publishers.

Edit: Didn't see hiska-kun's contribution above. Thanks! Will they be giving out full sales per platform as well?

And, just for fun, the software unit sales in the top 100 per hardware unit sale in 2015:

Code:
PS3	12.7
3DS 6.7
WIU 3.6
PS4 2.2
PSV 2.2
XB1 0.0

It's a pretty pointless metric, though, as (even aside from leaving out games with less than 65,000 sales) it's obviously going to be biased to older platforms with larger install bases.

I didn't know US number, but 70k is quite nice. Hopefully there's another Disgaea in the pipeline.

I love the Disgaea games, but they should try for a new IP that utilizes the same budget as Disgaea 5. The Witch and Hundred Knight was unfortunately just riddled with bugs.

Really poor sales for Xenoblade X. The franchise had no growth even with the acclaim and "success" of XB. Ugh,
I want to know what is it about this planet
:(

655K for MGS V is such a great result. The MGS audience in Japan hasn't faded one bit, right ?

700k+ with digital for MGSV iirc.

The franchise has been pretty constant over the years (note that MGSV project included Ground Zeroes as well, that sold well for being a sort of glorified demo).

  • {03/09/1998} Metal Gear Solid [PS] - 316,833 / 705,736
  • {29/11/2001} Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty [PS2] - 456,747 / 798,185
  • {16/12/2004} Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater [PS2] - 487,156 / 819,807
  • {12/06/2008} Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots [PS3] - 476,334 / 706,461
  • {29/04/2010} Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker [PSP] - 446,133 / 791,577

Bonus:
  • {20/03/2014} Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes [PS3] - 151,300 / 260,852
  • {20/03/2014} Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes [PS4] - 100,278 / 144,798

This list doesn't include budget releases and enhanced / HD versions, though; budget versions, in particular, tend to sell quite well over time, pushing the LTD close to a million:

  • {24/06/1999} Metal Gear Solid: Integral [PS] - 40,032 / 98,537
  • {12/09/2002} Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Mega Hits!) [PS2] - 8,039 / 42,160
  • {19/12/2002} Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance [PS2] - 64,867 / 147,561
  • {21/10/2004} Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Konami Collection) [PS2] - 16,192 / 37,595

  • {28/06/2012} Metal Gear Solid HD Edition [PSV] - 23,586 / 31,525

Is Mario Party 10 the worst selling Mario Party game on consoles?

Probably. I found this in an old thread

Second Week:
06 NGC Mario Party 7 - 30,000 (114,000)

It probably ended up higher than MP10

  • {14/12/1998} Mario Party [N64] - 153,858 / 714,358
  • {17/12/1999} Mario Party 2 [N64] - 131,155 / 884,249
  • {07/12/2000} Mario Party 3 [N64] - 221,240 / 846,453
  • {08/11/2002} Mario Party 4 [GC] - 177,605 / 902,827
  • {28/11/2003} Mario Party 5 [GC] - 100,565 / 697,462
  • {18/11/2004} Mario Party 6 [GC] - 96,707 / 527,132
  • {13/01/2005} Mario Party Advance [GBA] - 73,115 / 255,569
  • {10/11/2005} Mario Party 7 [GC] - 81,626 / 454,261
  • {26/07/2007} Mario Party 8 [Wii] - 282,389 / 1,470,332
  • {08/11/2007} Mario Party DS [DS] - 242,195 / 2,112,218
  • {26/04/2012} Mario Party 9 [Wii] - 163,631 / 700,442
  • {20/03/2014} Mario Party: Island Tour [3DS] - 135,419 / 476,442

Mario Party 10 will definitely be the worst-seller of the franchise, at least on home consoles; it might end up outselling Mario Party Advance when it's all said and done, though. Personally, I was expecting some more legs during 2015, but those didn't happen.

Fates vs Awakening is even more impressive when you consider that awakening launched prior to the eshop offering digital versions retail 3ds titles, giving it the advantage of 100% retail sales at launch.

We know Fire Emblem Fates sold at least 43k units on the eShop:

30. [3DS] Fire Emblem Fates: Black Kingdom / White Kingdom <SLG> (Nintendo) {2015.06.25} – 43.236

I think we don't know how many people purchased the other plotline, or the third one. Overall, the project must have been a huge success for Nintendo. Awakening DLC sold greatly, so there's no reason to think that Fates business model didn't succeed as well.

It's sold around 70k in NA so its doing better here then in Japan which I believe was always its core player base.

Source? creamsugar had Disgaea debuting at 26k units.

just to say, Idea Factory published only otome/adventure games on vita and they globally sold more than 125k, best title is around 20-25k

Releasing a game per month really pays off.

majora's mask did pretty well. zelda's been on the decline in japan, but the remake wound up about 150k short of the original.

Yep.

Agreed. It makes me excited to see what effect NX has in the Japanese market. I wonder if it can revitalize, to some degree, the console market for that region.

Third parties would have to fully support it so lolnope. It's PS4 or death for the console market.

655K for MGS V is such a great result. The MGS audience in Japan hasn't faded one bit, right ?

The lack of legs for Bloodborne is probably the most outrageous thing here. Will be interesting to see how fast Dark Souls III can reach 200K.

Also, we have Yakuza 0 at 240K for PS3 and 140K for PS4. We will see very soon how the situation has turned in favor of PS4 with Yakuza Kiwami release. Not to mention Dragon Quest Heroes II in May.

Dark Souls 2 sold 350k, & Bloodborne released when PS3 software was still doing better than PS4, so DS3 should be back to ~350k.

Is Mario Party 10 the worst selling Mario Party game on consoles?

In Japan? Mario Party Advance sold 241K, so I guess the Wii U game might claw up to outsell that barely. Worldwide I'm doubtful. The game had sales of 290K in its opening month in the US (higher than Mario Party 9 actually), so I'm sure it did much better Worldwide.

  • Data shop lists 70k+ people who've registered on the Disgaea Servers NA on the game. It doesn't include europe or japan. It is basically the internal analytics in the actual game. There is a menu option that shows how many unique IDs have played the game. It was around 50k since launch and now its 70k.

Wouldn't that be PSN accounts though and not necessarily equal to copies sold?

It possibly could but to be honest that disparity would be quite low. Data shop showed first week 50k and you could take away 10k I guess based on multiple users playing on the same system/different account.

well...how much does this data shop list for Japan? I mean you probably can't check it yourself but still

Can you clarify?

That it represents sales. Such digital to retail ratios are unheard of, as the launch number would suggest close to if not exceeding a 1:1 ratio.

The number is itself just a number. I have no reason to doubt its quantity.

Those 26k when it released I believe don't include digital, collectors edition, sales from NIS store. I don't have information on how many of those copies were sold on digital and on their store, but the limited edition selling out, launch day edition selling out, and Disgaea 5 charting higher digitally then Dragon Quest Heroes and Tales of Zestiria might have played a role.

It may not be 70k or 60k but its definitely not 26k anymore according to the Data Shop.

it does not.

Interesting. Well, there's evidence enough for stronger performance and digital adoption than the other two (who's sales have all around appeared poor, with DQH even doing badly on steam). Its just a surprising result in terms of retail (known) to digital, unless the NIS store/collectors edition amount to a very large share of the sales (moreso than I'd expect or is usual, anyway).

Good for them in that case.

Why not PS4 AND NX? Japan clearly loves Nintendo and if the NX console is more enticing to Japanese gamers than Wii U, it could very well help grow the market in Japan, along with PS4. I would also expect Japanese third-parties to be a much easier grab for Nintendo than western developers.
