fanboygirl-GAF: Have you ever bought a console for one specific game?

I've always found something I liked at a console launch. I've had all consoles around their launches except the NES and JAGUAR.

NES - Super Mario Bros.
SNES - Super Mario World
JAGUAR - AVP
PLAYSTATION - Ridge Racer
SATURN - Virtua Fighter 2
N64 - Super Mario 64
PS2 - Tekken Tag Tournament
GAMECUBE - Rogue Squadron
XBOX - Halo
XBOX 360 - Call of Duty 2
PS3 - Resistance: Fall of Man
Wii - Zelda (My wii is broken as of Jan 2008, won't get another.)

psp - gran turismo mobile! I didn't own a game for the system for half a year. well i got untold legends from a friend and felt ripped off for 10 dollars. I just used the system for it's media features and emulating my old console games. Now I have a good stack of games though.

ps3 - I just got it because i had the money at the time. Multiple coming soon games were what attracted me to it and GT:HD was what made it good enough to go get at the time.

PS2 - might have been just for gran turismo. it was the only game i remember owning for awhile. It doesn't count though because I knew there were billions of games, just not which I wanted. It was also the only real option at the time so this wasn't dumb at all.

final fantasy x.

that turned out to be a mistake.

thank god for mgs3, dmc, shinobi 2 and ico.
haha, I like how long some of that wait is for the thank gods if you got it when ffx was new :)

I bought a PSP on launch day just to play Disgaea on it when that game got released. It was cancelled 1 day later and left me a bitter bitter PSP owner for over two years. I didn't even use my PSP that whole time. Disgaea was picked back up again and has since been released. I'm happy about that and FFT, but otherwise I've been disappointed by my PSP.

I do not buy systems until I have at least 3 games I can't live without for it. I broke that rule two times. Once for the PSP and I got burned badly. The other time is the PS3. I've only wanted to play Ratchet & Clank so far, but I consider the purchase still a win with Blu-Ray and the upcoming Disgaea 3.

Xbox 360 - first bought it for Dead Rising, finished that and sold the 360t then brought an elite for Bioshock. I have also owned gears, crackdown and assassins creed on the 360.

Got a PS1 for final fantasy 8
PS2 for metal gear solid 2
going to get a PS3 for metal 4
got a 360 for bioshock/halo3
got a WII for Zelda
got a snes for trigger
well get my 4th psp for Crisis core!

I bought a SNES for Super Mario World, a PS2 for Gran Turismo 3, and a Gamecube for Wind Waker. Lots of folks buy a console to play a particular game, but I mean I bought these consoles for those games in a strong sense: I would not have been disappointed if those were the only games ever made for the system. (Though in all three cases I went on to buy other excellent games, in fact ones even better than the initial impetus to purchase.)

Doesn't everyone buy a system for one specific game in the beginning?

For me as far as I can remember,

NES - Super Mario Bros. 2
GB - Super Mario Land
SNES - Super Mario World
GEN - Sonic the Hedgehog
3DO - Samurai Shodown
Sega CD - Sonic CD
N64 - Super Mario 64
PSX - Alien Trilogy
SAT - Nights
TG16 - Blazing Lazers (LTTP)
DC - Power Stone
PS2 - Metal Gear Solid 2
GBA - Castlevania: COTM
GC - Super Monkey Ball
Xbox - Panzer Dragoon Orta
DS - Feel the Magic :lol
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy

Pending Systems*

360 - Dead Rising*
PSP - Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicle*
PS3 - Team ICO Project*

All the damn time

Phoenix Wright - DS
Crisis Core - PSP
Soul Calibur - Dreamcast
Final Fantasy X - PS2
Phantasy Star 2 - Genesis

Super Smash Bros - N64
Super Smash Bros Melee - Gamecube
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops - PSP (bought game before system)
Halo 2 - Xbox (bought game before system)
Metal Gear Solid 4 - PS3 (hey, its not out yet, but that's the only reason I got a PS3 to begin with)
Halo 3 LE (I actually haven't picked up my 360 yet XD how sad is that :( )

and I think that's it.

playstation for THPS. played the demo at a friends house and was hooked. already had a N64 too. traded my gameboy color? in towards the price too.

like a dumbass kid I traded in my snes with ton o games + 2 nes with over 50 games for an N64. worst gaming mistake ever. I played Wayne Gretzky 3D hockey at my friends house and had to have it.

PS3 for SOCOM Confrontation, when thee f is it coming out? pissin me off.

Xbox - Splinter Cell
PS2 - MGS2 (but GTA3 was the game that really blew me away, MGS2 was meh)
PS3 - Uncharted (and many future releases)

Bought a 360 for Gears of War.
GameCube for Metroid.

Will probably buy a Wii for Mario Galaxy... (maybe when it drops to $200) :D

This gen, certain games have made me want to get each particular console strongly for that game, but I knew of games that were coming that I wanted to own anyway.

Got a DS just for Pokemon-before Diamond and Pearl had been officially announced, even! Fortunately, I found plenty of worthy software in the meantime too.: D

SNES: Mario World
N64: Super Mario 64
GCN: Smash Brothers Melee and Rogue Leader
Nintendo DS: Mario Kart DS
Wii: Twilight Princess, SMG and SSBB.

PSX: Twisted Metal and Crash Bandicoot.
Dreamcast: Power Stone (shit we need a sequel)
Xbox 360: Fight Night and Oblivion.

I bought a Wii just to play Super Mario Galaxy. After I beat it, I sold both of them on ebay and got my money back. I'll have to get another Wii to play Smash Brawl, I might actually keep my Wii this time depending on how much I like Brawl.

(ironically) the DS for Advance Wars. though it has to do with how much money i have too. i'll certainly get more games down the line, but right now, my DS is pretty much my AW machine.

Xbox 360 - Gears of War
Gamecube - REmake
Wii - RE UC (Already sold the second hand after finish the game :P)
PS3 - Uncharted Drake Fortune

I bought my Gamecube specifically for Zelda after seeing the first "Celda" trailer (where Toon Link swings form the chandelier). Wind Waker really disappointed me though, but the Cube itself was alright.

I bought my GBA speficially for Pokemon Sapphire. Sapphire and Leaf Green remain my only GBA games!

I was undecided on which new gen console I wanted this time around, but Twilight Princess (and the inevitable Smash Bros) sold me on the Wii.

Slightly different... I remember playing the Space Channel 5 demo at Best Buy and _really_ wanting a Dreamcast afterwards. A few years, I picked up a Dreamcast and a used copy of SC5 just to play that again. :lol I also picked up Phantasy Star and a few others. I really wish I (and more people) supported that console back in the day.

PS2 > As soon as Meal Gear Solid 2 was released.
GC > When Zelda Twilight Princess was supposed to come out (before the one year delay).

Genesis: Sonic 2
N64: Goldeneye
Ps2: Gran Turismo3
Gamecube: RE4
Xbox: Halo

I guess these aren't so much "I bought the system for the game" as they are "The games that pushed me over the edge to buy the system.

Xbox for Kotor, I wanted this game so much that when it came for deciding between a ps2 and an Xbox, I went with the latter. I still think it was somewhat worth it

I bought Panzer Dragoon Orta as soon as it was released in Europe and had to wait one month to get an Xbox to play it.

Can you imagine the pain?
