So is there anyway in game to see what the requirements for a hidden side mission are? Any hints about where to go on the map, or do you just need to use a guide?

Guide is your best bet. You need to pick up a certain number of healing items while fighting the boss in a specific sector

So I don't follow the Fate series much but why does this waifu gender swapped Nero Cladius look like Arturia only dressed in red?

No real reason. She's just one of the first Saber-faces (depends on how you count Mordred and dunno when Jeanne was designed) and it started a trend.

Excluding alternate versions of Arturia, off the top of my head, there are:

-
Mordred
-Nero
-Jeanne
-d'Eon
-Souji Okita
-Gray (from the Lord El-Melloi II Case Files)

And if you include alternates of Arturia and other Saber-faces, you add:

-
Saber Alter
-Saber Lily
-Master Artoria
-Arturia Lancer
-Arturia Alter Lancer
-Saber Lion
-Mysterious Heroine X
-Mysteirous Heroine X Alter
-Ultra Heroine Z
-Jeanne Alter
-Jeanne Alter Lily
-Devil Saber (aka Okita Alter)

Those are the ones I remember/looked up, anyway. Add them all up, there are 18 Saber-face/clones.

So far I like it. Normal is fine so far and I think I'll aim to get the Platinum. I've been at 39 Plats for nearly 2 years or so now :V
Just a heads up that not only will you have to beat all the stages (main + side missions) on very hard difficulty, but you'll have to get all the mystic codes as well and there isn't really a detailed guide on how to unlock them. There is a Japanese one but when you run it through google translate it ends up making less sense somehow.

Also Jalter is best saberface.

Also speaking of Saber-faces, from a recent interview with Nasu about Fate/Grand Order:

(Quoting someone from twitter who read it)

"Takeuchi draws Artoria during his free time. Then he's like "Bam, _____ Artoria" as if to say please add her to the event or story."

Shocker that Takeuchi draws his waifu all the damn time, haha.

Wait for the Very Hard trophy can't I just do it through Free play? It has to be all main and side missions?

YES.
You're right on that . Free mission do NOT count

Eh in that case I'll skip the Plat. and just get a few more trophies :p
To be fair though with the right Instant Skills I should be able to clear them while leveling up through the stages.

A sequel gives me hopes of getting Robin Hood in the game.

That he didn't show up is a travesty.

Sorry for the bump, but considering this comes out on Switch soon...

I've always liked the sound of the Fate/XXX stuff. What's the best way to get into it? Can I just dive into Fate/EXTRA on psp? Should I start with the Fate/stay night VN (or anime)? Something else?

There's various ways to get into it. The visual novel can take you a while to get through but it is the core of Fate, so it wouldn't be a bad idea. If you'd rather not take all that time, you can watch Fate/Zero (an anime prequel to Fate/Stay Night, originally a light novel written by Gen Urobuchi) and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (series, not movie. Series came out in the past few years). Unlimited Blade Works is one of the three routes that makes up Fate/Stay Night (the routes are Fate, UBW, and Heaven's Feel). Heaven's Feel has a series of movies in the works.

Bear in mind, if you watch FZ first, it does spoil some things you discover in FSN. However, the reverse is true too, as FSN naturally lets you know the general outcome of FZ's grail war.

Fate/Extra you can go into if you don't know much, as I recall. Its an alternate timeline (the Nasuverse (the multiverse of Type-Moon properties) tends to like alternate timelines). Bear in mind that there is a sequel to Extra, Extra CCC, but that did not come over to the west. Extella has a number of connections to CCC I believe, but you can do ok without it.

Fate/Apocrypha is airing right now in Japan, but that is yet another alternate timeline, but if you want to look into it, you can.

There is also Fate/Grand Order, a mobile gacha game that came to the west recently. Another alternate timeline (and also is greatly expanding general Fate, and Nasuverse, lore).

If you want a more in-depth "What to watch/read/play with Fate" guide, try this FAQ from /r/anime.

I am reviewing the Switch version.
Man, if it IS rough. It clearly shows its PSVita (I think?) roots.
Is the PS4 version the same? Very basic-looking?

Yes. The PS4 version isn't a great looker, either.

yep, although it does have decent IQ

thank you
I don't want to downtone a game just for its look/graphic, of course, and I still have to actually/properly play it. I was just surprised by its visual output
Is it safe to say that the main version was the Vita one, and that they ported it to PS4/Switch almost as it was?

Thinking about getting the Switch version since it has all the DLC. Since the game is out in JP already and reviewers presumably have copies, are there any performance differences between Switch and PS4 versions? Stuff like number of enemies on screen, etc.?

XSEED seems pretty disinterested in pushing the new versions of the game, hopefully things ramp up before release on the 25th. If you went on their social media feeds you'd probably think they solely work on Falcom titles.

Marvelous Europe has been doing a much better job by comparison - they took the game to Japan Expo and they've been regularly reminding people about the game on Switch and PC.

thank you

Pretty much. The PS4 version (and Switch it seems) adds cel shaded outlines around character models and a much-needed boost to resolution but there isn't much else other than higher resolution (alpha?) effects and better surfaces in the environments. The framerate also saw a boost on PS4, naturally.

Yup, resolution, polishness and frame rate seems decent.
character models and environments not that much :D

It's very obvious by the low res effects and the emptyness of the maps that it's the case.

This or Splatoon 2?
I've only watched Fate/stay night and played a bit of Fate/Grand Order, but I like the sound of a Musou-like game on the go.
Do I need to play anything else before this one?

You technically don't really need to play anything as they do a good job of explaining what you need to know, and if you want more there's a digital manual available too.
But, uh, it's not a good game, so pick Splatoon 2 instead.

Is it any good as a moo-sow game? I mean, compared to the quality of say, any of the DW Gundams, Hyrule Warriors or even the Kamen Rider Battride War titles, which I quite enjoyed.

It's probably the worst musou I played. Not that it's a mess or anything. Just completely uninteresting.

Depends on what you like them for. If you like the map control bits it is one of the best, if you like the cathartic buttonmashing and beating a thousand dudes it is one of the worst.

I like this one a lot.

How's the movement options for map control? I'm a bit of a fan of what DWG3 did.

Yeah, as mentioned above the game does a good job with territorial control.

it's a shame the maps themselves are rather cookie-cutter by design, you pretty much have to rely on the minimaps to get around. More memorable level layouts would have been beneficial.

Your character is really frakking fast (unless you're Lu Bu, poor guy), maybe like DWG3 with infinite boost? And you sort of automatically super dash between zones. Dash cancels are kinda like that game too.

And you really need that movement to get around, the game expects you to zip all over the map to do damage control and take out people, then quickly leave.

The main penalty for not taking care of things properly is time, as the zones you took over will get taken back etc. If you're playing well a map takes 10 minutes or less but if you're playing poorly it can run 45 minutes or so, lol.

One thing that's different from other musou games is that it's story heavy. There's VERY long cutscenes between stages so if that doesn't sound good to you, stay away. (There is a sort of Free Mode too though, but you only unlock stages/characters for it in the main story mode)

Fate/Extra had absolutely bland dungeons as well, so it's accurate to the source material! :V
