The Tunguska Event

A large explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate, Russia, on the morning of 30 June 1908. The explosion over the sparsely populated Eastern Siberian Taiga flattened 2,000 square kilometres of forest, and caused at least three human casualties.

Theories range from Asteroid air explosion, to UFO weapons of mass destruction.

It was almost assuredly an air burst from a comet or asteroid explosion. Many scientists are in agreement on that. But you never know for sure with crazy ass Russia and their obsession with nukes.

I have one you probably haven't heard of unless you're Swedish: the Olof Palme assassination. On the evening of February 28'th 1986, Sweden's world famous prime minister goes to the cinema in central Stockholm with his wife. On their way home they pass a store and a guy steps out and shoots him in the back. Palme is dead before he hits the street. The murderer takes a shot at his wife but misses, the bullet grazing her back. Despite nearly 30 witnesses nobody gets a good look at the guy. He runs off down an alley and disappears forever leaving no traces whatsoever.

The investigation is the largest and most expensive in the world. It's still ongoing. There's like a dozen main theories about who did it and why. Some of them silly, some plausible, and a few with far reaching implications.

“On the first night of February 1959, nine ski-hikers died mysteriously in the mountains of what is now Russia. The night of the incident, the group had set up camp on a slope, enjoyed dinner, and prepared for sleep—but something went catastrophically wrong because the group never returned.

On February 26, searchers found the hikers’ abandoned tent, which had been ripped open from the inside. Surrounding the area were footprints left by the group, some wearing socks, some wearing a single shoe, some barefoot, all of which continued to the edge of a nearby wood. That’s where the first two bodies were found, shoeless and wearing only underwear. The scene bore marks of death by hypothermia, but as medical examiners inventoried the bodies, as well as the other seven that were discovered over the months that followed, hypothermia no longer made sense. In fact, the evidence made no sense at all. One body had evidence of a blunt force trauma consistent with a brutal assault; another had third-degree burns; one had been vomiting blood; one was missing a tongue, and some of their clothing was found to be radioactive.

Theories floated include KGB-interference, drug overdose, UFO, gravity anomalies, and the Russian version of the Yeti. Recently, a documentary filmmaker presented a theory involving a terrifying but real phenomenon called “infrasound,” in which the wind interacts with the topography to create a barely audible hum that can nevertheless induce powerful feelings of nausea, panic, dread, chills, nervousness, raised heartbeat rate, and breathing difficulties. The only consensus remains that whatever happened involved an overwhelming and possibly “inhuman force.”

The English Sweating Sickness is another one. I mean, it's just another illness, but I want to know if it's something that was organically eradicated or if it's something that still exists today. We still don't know what it is, though scientists have speculated.

What are the true identities of the “rogue team” plaguing the A.I.M.S. team on “Mountain Monsters”.

I came here to post this one. I'm not a fan of stuff like UFO and ghost mysteries because I don't believe in either but this is a real event that happened and super super strange.

Exactly what I was gonna post.

I've seen a few theorists trying to debunk it as a simple avalanche, but there's so much weirdness that that doesnt explain that I just don't buy it.

I've seen this on forensic files as one of the suspects I think it was olaf gunnerson or something was murdered in America by some woman's jealous ex

Yeah I remember that being one of the main explanations but it only fits for some of the situation and a couple of the victims and not at all for the others. That's what's so weird about it is the variety of weirdness altogether. I think the only thing they know for sure is they left in a hurry, like fled the camp as some were naked/barely clothed and I think one group cut themselves out of the back of a tent or something. And it was freezing out so they wouldn't leave without clothes.

The Somerton Man (Tamám Shud case)

The Tamám Shud case, also known as the Mystery of the Somerton Man, is an unsolved case of an unidentified man found dead at 6:30 am, 1 December 1948, on the Somerton Park beach, just south of Adelaide, South Australia. The case is named after the Persian phrase tamám shud, meaning "ended" or "finished," which was printed on a scrap of paper found months later in the fob pocket of the man's trousers. The scrap had been torn from the final page of a copy of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám, authored by 12th-century poet, Omar Khayyám.

Following a public appeal by police, the book from which the page had been torn was located. On the inside back cover, detectives were able to read – in indentations from handwriting – a local telephone number, another unidentified number and a text that resembled an encrypted message. The text has not been deciphered or interpreted in a way that satisfies authorities on the case.

There has been persistent speculation that the dead man was a spy, due to the circumstances and historical context of his death.

Came in to post this.

Death of Elisa Lam

The body of Elisa Lam, also known by her Cantonese name, Lam Ho Yi (; April 30, 1991[1] – February 2013), a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was recovered from a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles on February 19, 2013.[2] She had been reported missing at the beginning of the month. Maintenance workers at the hotel discovered the body when investigating guest complaints of problems with the water supply.

Her disappearance had been widely reported; interest had increased five days prior to her body's discovery when the Los Angeles Police Department released video of the last time she was known to have been seen, on the day of her disappearance, by an elevator security camera. In the footage, Lam is seen exiting and re-entering the elevator, talking and gesturing in the hallway outside, and sometimes seeming to hide within the elevator, which itself appears to be malfunctioning. The video went viral on the Internet, with many viewers reporting that they found it unsettling. Explanations ranged from claims of paranormal involvement to bipolar disorder from which Lam suffered; it has also been argued that the video was altered prior to release.[3]

The circumstances of Lam's death, once she was found, also raised questions, especially in light of the Cecil's history in relation to other notable deaths and murders. Her body was naked[4] with most of her clothes and personal effects floating in the water near her.[4] It took the Los Angeles County Coroner's office four months, after repeated delays, to release the autopsy report, which reports no evidence of physical trauma and states that the manner of death was accidental.[5] Guests at the Cecil, now re-branded as Stay on Main, sued the hotel over the incident, and Lam's parents filed a separate suit later that year; the latter was dismissed in 2015. Some of the early Internet interest noted what were considered to be unusual similarities between Lam's death and the 2005 horror film Dark Water.[2] The case has since been referenced in international popular culture.

Hinterkaifeck murders

Hinterkaifeck was a small farmstead situated between the Bavarian towns of Ingolstadt and Schrobenhausen, approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) north of Munich, that has become infamous as the scene of one of the most gruesome and puzzling unsolved crimes in German history. On the evening of March 31, 1922, the six inhabitants of the farm were killed with a mattock. The six victims were parents Andreas Gruber (63) and Cäzilia Gruber (72); their widowed daughter Viktoria Gabriel (35); Viktoria's children, Cäzilia (7) and Josef (2); and the maid, Maria Baumgartner (44).

Strange things began to occur in and around Hinterkaifeck sometime shortly before the attack. Six months before the attack, the family maid quit, claiming she heard strange sounds and that she believed the house to be haunted.[3] Andreas Gruber found a strange newspaper from Munich on the property in March 1922. He could not remember buying it and thus Gruber initially believed that the postman had lost the newspaper.[3] This was not the case, however, as no one in the vicinity subscribed to the paper.[4] Just days before the murders, Gruber told neighbours he discovered tracks in the fresh snow that led from the forest to a broken door lock in the farm's machine room.[3] While this alone was not unsettling, it was the fact that the tracks did not lead away from the house again that unnerved him. Around the same time, some of the family's house keys went missing.

Later, during the night they heard footsteps in the attic, but Gruber found no one when he searched the building. Although he told several people about these alleged observations, he refused to accept help and the details went unreported to the police.[3] According to a school friend of the seven-year Cäzilia Gabriel, the young girl reported that her mother Viktoria had fled the farm the night before the act after a violent quarrel and only hours later had been found in the forest.[5] The family also repeatedly observed a man with a moustache, standing at the forest's edge and staring toward the house, apparently observing them.

March 31 - April 1, 1922[edit]
On the afternoon of March 31, 1922, a Friday, the new maid, Maria Baumgartner, arrived at the farm. Maria's sister had escorted her there and left the farm after a short stay.[3] She was most likely the last person to see the inhabitants alive. It appears that in the late evening, Viktoria Gabriel, her seven-year-old daughter Cäzilia, and her parents Andreas and Cäzilia, were lured to the family barn through the stable, where they were murdered, one at a time.[3] The perpetrator (or perpetrators) used a mattock belonging to the family farm and killed the family with blows to the head. The perpetrator moved into the living quarters, where - with the same murder weapon - he killed Baumgartner in her bedchamber. Presumably, he killed Josef last, as he slept in his bassinet in his mother's bedroom.[6]

Third time is the charm.

Disappearance of Lars Mittank

Lars Mittank[1] (born February 19, 1986) is a German man who disappeared on July 8, 2014, near Varna Airport in Varna, Bulgaria. Mittank was vacationing in Golden Sands where he was involved in a fight, and was unable to fly home with his friends for health reasons. Mittank was witnessed acting strangely while alone in Bulgaria, and days later disappeared into the forest around Varna Airport for unknown reasons.[2]

Disappearance and mysterious behaviour[edit]
On June 30, 2014, 28-year-old Lars Mittank traveled to the seaside resort of Golden Sands, Bulgaria vacationing with a group of friends.[3] On July 6, 2014, Mittank got into a fight with four other men after a disagreement over football: Mittank, a fan of the football club Werder Bremen, had differences with fans of Bayern Munich.[4] The fight resulted in Mittank suffering from a ruptured ear drum.[5] At the end of his trip, due to the ruptured ear drum, a doctor advised him not to fly[3] and prescribed an antibiotic named Cefuroxime (500 mg)[4] and later referred him to a hospital. His friends wanted to stay with him, but Mittank insisted he was fine on his own.

Mittank stayed in Bulgaria without his friends and checked into a cheap hotel.[3] However, a day after his friends left, Mittank began to act oddly, and his erratic behavior was recorded by the hotel's security cameras.[4] He spent only one night in the hotel but he was paranoid and frightened. Mittank sent a text message to his mother stating that he did not feel safe, that she should cancel his credit card and that he was hiding from four men who were supposedly following him and asked him where some pills were. Mittank was last seen in Varna Airport, the airport that serves Golden Sands in the nearby city of Varna. He was captured by airport security cameras running away. Once outside the airport, he was seen climbing a fence, running into a meadow and disappearing into the woods. He has not been seen since.[5] Bulgarian TV reporter Jill Alexander reported Mittank was just running to find a private area to deal with stomach issues resulting from the antibiotic.

I remember reading about Dyatlov Pass and Emily Lam. Holy shit creep factor is high. And Hollywood hasn’t taped into that yet?

Dyatlov Pass and Tamam Shud are the two that immediately came to mind.

Another one I love is the "Who Put Bella in the Witch Elm?" case. The podcast series Casefile covers it really well.

I really enjoyed this one, too. SYSK did a good podcast on it. Definitely some weird shit, but it can all be explained. Hypothermia as to being why they removed their clothes, animals being why some organs were missing etc..)
Soviets did some weird shit though so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some nuclear tests or something involved as well

I bit of a general thought, but I just love that we live in a universe that is so vast and varied that we have these incredible and inexplicable occurrences. And that's just in our brief window into our little street in the universe. The mystery is immense and endlessly captivating. Wouldn't it be boring to know too much.

Scared the living fuck out of me when I was younger. I was born in 1980 and lived around the area he was abducting kids. It was a surreal and scary time to be alive in that area. I've subsequently spoken to my father about that time and even he said it was quite a frightening time living around there. There are theories on who he is...
