It was almost assuredly an air burst from a comet or asteroid explosion. Many scientists are in agreement on that. But you never know for sure with crazy ass Russia and their obsession with nukes.

I have one you probably haven't heard of unless you're Swedish: the Olof Palme assassination. On the evening of February 28'th 1986, Sweden's world famous prime minister goes to the cinema in central Stockholm with his wife. On their way home they pass a store and a guy steps out and shoots him in the back. Palme is dead before he hits the street. The murderer takes a shot at his wife but misses, the bullet grazing her back. Despite nearly 30 witnesses nobody gets a good look at the guy. He runs off down an alley and disappears forever leaving no traces whatsoever.
The investigation is the largest and most expensive in the world. It's still ongoing. There's like a dozen main theories about who did it and why. Some of them silly, some plausible, and a few with far reaching implications.

I've seen a few theorists trying to debunk it as a simple avalanche, but there's so much weirdness that that doesnt explain that I just don't buy it.

Yeah I remember that being one of the main explanations but it only fits for some of the situation and a couple of the victims and not at all for the others. That's what's so weird about it is the variety of weirdness altogether. I think the only thing they know for sure is they left in a hurry, like fled the camp as some were naked/barely clothed and I think one group cut themselves out of the back of a tent or something. And it was freezing out so they wouldn't leave without clothes.

The body of Elisa Lam, also known by her Cantonese name, Lam Ho Yi (藍可兒; April 30, 1991[1] – February 2013), a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was recovered from a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles on February 19, 2013.[2] She had been reported missing at the beginning of the month. Maintenance workers at the hotel discovered the body when investigating guest complaints of problems with the water supply.
Her disappearance had been widely reported; interest had increased five days prior to her body's discovery when the Los Angeles Police Department released video of the last time she was known to have been seen, on the day of her disappearance, by an elevator security camera. In the footage, Lam is seen exiting and re-entering the elevator, talking and gesturing in the hallway outside, and sometimes seeming to hide within the elevator, which itself appears to be malfunctioning. The video went viral on the Internet, with many viewers reporting that they found it unsettling. Explanations ranged from claims of paranormal involvement to bipolar disorder from which Lam suffered; it has also been argued that the video was altered prior to release.[3]
The circumstances of Lam's death, once she was found, also raised questions, especially in light of the Cecil's history in relation to other notable deaths and murders. Her body was naked[4] with most of her clothes and personal effects floating in the water near her.[4] It took the Los Angeles County Coroner's office four months, after repeated delays, to release the autopsy report, which reports no evidence of physical trauma and states that the manner of death was accidental.[5] Guests at the Cecil, now re-branded as Stay on Main, sued the hotel over the incident, and Lam's parents filed a separate suit later that year; the latter was dismissed in 2015. Some of the early Internet interest noted what were considered to be unusual similarities between Lam's death and the 2005 horror film Dark Water.[2] The case has since been referenced in international popular culture.

Strange things began to occur in and around Hinterkaifeck sometime shortly before the attack. Six months before the attack, the family maid quit, claiming she heard strange sounds and that she believed the house to be haunted.[3] Andreas Gruber found a strange newspaper from Munich on the property in March 1922. The perpetrator moved into the living quarters, where - with the same murder weapon - he killed Baumgartner in her bedchamber. Mittank was vacationing in Golden Sands where he was involved in a fight, and was unable to fly home with his friends for health reasons. Mittank was witnessed acting strangely while alone in Bulgaria, and days later disappeared into the forest around Varna Airport for unknown reasons.[2]

Mittank stayed in Bulgaria without his friends and checked into a cheap hotel.[3] However, a day after his friends left, Mittank began to act oddly, and his erratic behavior was recorded by the hotel's security cameras.[4] He spent only one night in the hotel but he was paranoid and frightened. Mittank sent a text message to his mother stating that he did not feel safe, that she should cancel his credit card and that he was hiding from four men who were supposedly following him and asked him where some pills were. Once outside the airport, he was seen climbing a fence, running into a meadow and disappearing into the woods. I really enjoyed this one, too. SYSK did a good podcast on it. Definitely some weird shit, but it can all be explained. Hypothermia as to being why they removed their clothes, animals being why some organs were missing etc..)

And that's just in our brief window into our little street in the universe. The mystery is immense and endlessly captivating. Wouldn't it be boring to know too much.

Scared the living fuck out of me when I was younger. I was born in 1980 and lived around the area he was abducting kids. It was a surreal and scary time to be alive in that area. I've subsequently spoken to my father about that time and even he said it was quite a frightening time living around there. There are theories on who he is...
