FF16 is the first true next gen game

I can confidently say this type of gameplay and graphical prowess is not possible on 8th gen. Nothing else exclusive to the system has shown anything like this thus far.

Not to hate on that game or anything, but the timestamp, to me, looks just like a slowed down beat em up?
Game will probably look great and play great too, I just don't see it do anything that sets it apart from other next-gen games we currently have?

I've not invested in next gen yet because I was expecting so much more in terms of game design given all the bluster about power and SSD's on these consoles. All I've seen is the same old same old.....and when I finally see next gen gameplay I'm presented with what looks like an interactive cut scene.......I guess I'll just opt out of this gen altogether then.

Maybe not gameplay wise but at least graphically this is definitely next gen.

But then again the devs said only the PS5 could handle the games combat.

It's basically a Mech Combat game but the mechs involve medieval magic or some such McGuffin. The graphics are impressive, certainly, but the concept has been known for decades now; Armoured Core first released in 1997. There were probably some Mech titles on PC's before that which I'm unaware of. One of my all-time favourite mech combat games is Titanfall 2 and that released in 2016. You even had full PvP, I will always remember my first multiplayer match, enemy players calling in their Titans on top of me, almost soiled my pants.

It can't be a next-gen game when it is powered by PS4-era graphics technology, only allowed to reach these heights due to the power of the PS5. Same with Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart or Horizon: Forbidden West.

The original, pre-downgrade, Project Athia teaser not only looks better but it is also one of the very few things I'd qualify as a true next-gen showcase.

It's so frantic I can't really tell how good the graphcis are to be honest. The gameplay is certainly not for me, in the same way Forspoken didn't appeal. It's too busy trying to impress with effects, but ends up looking a mess IMO.

Nah remember the first trailer, it looked very last gen. A true next gen game can't start from that. On the contrary it just tells you that it probably started as a PS4 game, and that as development went on was upgraded as a current game only (like many others).

It looks way better than those other PS5 games.

Its a travesty what happened to project athia.

And that speaks of the skill and craftmanship of Yoshi-P's team, but the tech powering the game is very reminiscent of the PS4 era, with no fancy PS5-only stuff as it would have been an extensive RT implementation or a Nanite-equivalent for the geometry. It is more of a refinement than revolution in that regard, which is only natural for a game that began development 7 years ago, likely with cross-gen in mind.

I don't even know what next-gen gameplay means. Is it animation? Scale? Fluidity?

The greatest leaps forward in gameplay in the last decade have been Breath of the Wild (running on a shitty cell phone from 2011), Elden Ring, RDR2, and No Man's Sky (all running on a slightly better cell phone from 2011).

Tech keeps changing how the presentation makes us feel about games, and gameplay design innovations will keep happening, but we're not going to have any fundamental changes to what is possible.

We're way past that. These debates are silly.

Quick time events and numbers on the screen , sure didnt do that last gen
The numbers really bother me. All those gold numbers popping up like that makes me feel like im in a casino or on a mobile game. I've played tons of RPG's so its not just about the #'s..but the colors they choose to use just make an otherwise beautiful scene look comical in a sense.

I hope we can change text colors or turn it off, the power bars would be enough for me

I'm still confused at people thinking Ratchet and Clank Rift Appart looks next gen.
I mean wtf, the game, aside from those rift transition, has nothing next gen, especially during gameplay.
Most of the textures of this game are pretty low-mid resolution, and the geometry isn't really detailed.

How is this next gen ? There's plenty of other examples. The game mostly shines in cinematics when zoomed in on characters, but for all the environnements (foliage, geometry and textures) it's really nothing next gen and even pales in comparison of a lot of last gen titles.

Just look at this :

How is this next gen ?

FFXVI is miles away from this in comparison, the textures resolution, geometry, hair of the characters, lighting, everything is much more advanced.

Just look at these environnements :

Best quality in this link but the sequence is not the same :

FFXVI is the first next gen game, and it doesn't rely on heavy fog to hide its flaws like other wide open field game. Horizon is baffling on this matter.
