The Dengeki article doesn't actually seem to be the full transcript, but it's pretty detailed for the parts it does cover. It explains more about the weapon system too. Tabata says that out of all your equipped weapons, you flag one of them as your "main" weapon. That allows you to use special attacks for that weapon. There's a manual special attack button which is different from the basic attack button.

Okay, this sounds good. The translated video will hopefully be up in a short amount of time so that everyone can see the info for themselves.

Also, I love all the gameplay they showed. There's lots to analyze there.

Alright I'm liking the sound of that. Definitely adds depth to choosing a weapon for the right fight.

Those are probably some of the videos they have prepared for the promotion of FFXV Episode Duscae between now and its release in March 2015.

That's what I'm thinking. they mentioned the next update being in November and they said they will likely be at Jump Festa in December, so we could likely see those videos then.

So far I think Tabata is doing a fantastic job on damage control in this Q&A. He's addressing various question head on and not evading anything. He really has cleared up a lot of concerns for better or for worse.

- He says that the E3 gameplay battle footage was playable, but an earlier version. I believe he said you can still play the game on that level, but it was showing off more advanced moves and so on. I think he said it was a prototype concept that they are working towards in development.

- With regards to the "hold button for awesome" comments, he says that the defensive stance drains MP, so you can't just hold the button forever and be invincible. There are also more technical aspects of evasion which are more advanced. For attacking, you hold the button for basic combos, but there are also advanced action aspects with regards to timing and attacking in certain directions, or influenced by equipment.

- He confirms you can jump in the game. The battle system in FFXV is Active Cross Battle (AXB), and Noctis is the only playable character. You control Noctis because the entire battle system is built around him and how the other party members interact with him.

- He also talks about the the weapon switching too. Instead of active weapon switching during combat, it uses player settings prepared in advance. This is likely part of the gambit-like system he talked about before. The weapon used is automatic based on the conditions, but it sounds like the player has control over how those conditions are determined.

The new video was pretty good too. The game is still pretty far away, but I think he's making serious efforts to address concerns and get people excited for the game. It's really good PR compared to the normal stuff from S-E.

back on the hype train aww yeahhh

I've learned more about this game in the past three weeks than I had with Versus in 8 years. Good on Tabata for actually addressing concerns head on. (And actually being aware of said concerns in the first place) I'm loving the transparency.

Definitely looks like they are set in a path and have the direction they need and are confident in the product they are making.

I just hope for the best. I've been playing Final Fantasy games since I was 5 years old. There is no greater joy in gaming then hitting Play and hearing the Prelude chimes come through the speakers.

So of course for someone like me, seeing drastic changes in the formula to a beloved franchise is going to be met with .... concern. Especially since it hasn't been done very well so far. FFXII and FFXIII had their good and bad points to the combat system, but for me, nothing really compared to the awe inspiring cinematic ATB/Queue systems of FF1-9 and X. Nothing compared to watching your Summon come down and throw a giant meteor at the enemy. I then think about that sort of combat system with todays power potential. Maybe a landscape engine that allows for deformation and destruction. So sending Ifrit down to launch a giant meteor at your enemies would leave a gigantic crater. Maybe that crater unveils a hidden underground cavern that turns into a massive epic dungeon for you to experience.

You know, shit like that runs through my head. I could be wrong and this could be the best FF ever made. I hope so! Also. Make a good story damnit. FXII was downright bad. FFXIII was ... I don't even know how to describe that story. They tried way too hard on it.

Sounds good. I'm guessing each weapon has their unique "signature" combo and you can use them only if they're assigned as main weapon, and these are manual in control rather than pre-set configuration.

What we've learned about the battle system today:

- There's at least an attack button, a defend button, a skill button, and a jump button.
- Holding defend to evade drains MP, doesn't last forever.
- The attack button is used for basic combos, weapons used are context driven based on equipped weapons and context settings the player selects.
- The skill button is used to do special attacks for the main weapon equipped.
- There will be advanced evasion and attack techniques depending on equipment and control input.
- You can use the sword barrier defensively in battle, you can do short warps in the battlefield, you can parry attacks.
- There will be lots of tactical aspects in battle for core games, like elemental weaknesses and so on.
- Noctis is the only playable character, but his unique combat style and how the party interacts with him in battles is what drives the entire battle system.

I'll say that's a pretty great haul of information considering the confusion the interviews left most people post-TGS. They addressed stuff in a really timely manner too. The "casual" backlash definitely seems to have motivated Tabata to come forward and clear things up I think.

The "choose one as your special/main weapon" thing sounds pretty cool, I just hope changing it is REALLY fast. Like, in and out of menus in 2-3 seconds fast.

I wonder if MP is slowly regained through the battle, or if we're rewarded with MP regain when we play a certain way. Also super excited that timing/direction is key.

lol damnit. and this is why i should stop being lazy, literally just missed the stream
thanks for all the info guys. just reading this thread alone drove my hype through the roof
only slight bummer is the no character switching but im not all that fussed. everything else sounds dope, spirit of kh still lives on
plus i did also really enjoy xii so at this point i'd like to know more about how this pseudo gambit system is going to work for the other characters

Someone in the chat asked for a Lightning skin for Noctis lmao.
would've thrown eggs at that person

i want to apply to work on the game

i have years of neogaf experience

S-E hit me up via PM dawgs

i think you'd make a fantastic cheerleader, they should hire you if just for that

EDIT:
The full thing is up on youtube now.

Here's where the gameplay starts.

cheers!

This new bit of information has eased my fret. Though I am a bit sad I won't be able to play as Cor, I trust Tabata that he chose not to for a reason.
The combat system as a whole still sounds very confusing when explained, but I think it will "click" only when you have it in your hands.

Can't wait for next viewing. :)

I played every FF, I know. I wanted to know what you expected in this game as you could see Prompto having a TPS mechanic in the 2011 Versus trailer and I was wondering if people expected 5 different battle mechanics^^
---

Man, Tabata is a great guy. Very open and laid-back, like Yoshida. Seems like he has fun doing his job and is actually confident and proud to show it off, finally.

I know what you meant... :)

I just got caught up thinking about the 3, 4, or 5 character parties in each prior game and wanted to post that list to show that at least we get 4 on screen if not more; which will be nice for a change...

To your point, I didn't expect different play styles during switching, because I didn't want to presume that we'd get to switch necessarily until we knew for sure one way or the other. Now that I know that we won't be able to, my mind can imagine that each other character will be like having a different job class/class mash-up from prior FF's...

...I wonder if "Items" will be used in an automatic way by only one of the characters, or will all characters be able to use items? Will there even be items like potions, or will characters use "healing skills" if they're not adept at magic. I hope that health doesn't auto regenerate for each character if they don't get hit for a while. I still want a system that forces me to be tight-assed with doling out potions only when absolutely necessary... :p

I can already see the commercials of these dudes rolling up to a McDonalds and ordering some fries and a big mac. Then heading off into the distance with these massive creatures on the horizon and a giant Crystal ( astral shard? ) hovering and the prelude music playing lol

Type-0 has characters that play around a battle system, FFXV has a battle system that plays around a character. That's cool.

Can't wait for the translated version, so many stuff to see (I'm also curious about what they said on Type-0).

Official bullshot versions ;)

I'm ok with this, I just want pretty screenshots to look at. At least they didn't lie with the actual videos. We'll know the game's quality when the demo comes out. Let me fool myself with pretty shots until then.
