Fighters SEGAmix (A fan theory of the Ultimate SEGA 2D Fighter by Arc System Works)

Hello all!

Another Thread, another set of ideas about SEGA!

I mentioned this elsewhere but I thought it'd be a good idea to make a thread on it.

After playing Groove on Fight for awhile, I wondered why SEGA have never done a 2D Fighter and what it'd be like if they decided to threw absolutely everything at it!!!

So the game premise would be that Arc System Works gets involved and is given a multi-million budget to make the game as diverse as King of Fighters 14 with its vast roster.

The game would have a 3 vs 3 mechanic, (similar to Marvel vs Capcom) with a 4th "Support" character, which can only be tagged in with the Final 3rd Character if they are in a Critical Status (1/10th Health), that can only be activated via a Button Combination. (learning this would make Arcade Mode more bare-able for higher difficulties)

Each Series only gets 3 characters Max per Franchise. However, mix and matching would be a great way to play your favourites.

The Roster would then look like this.

Virtua Fighter

Akira - Easter Egg changing his name to Ryu?
Pai Chan - Can change into her other appareances

Fighting Stages

Puyo Fever (Puyo Puyo)
The Stage takes place at the Magic School, with the Puyos being the floor and Arle & Co Watching on moving in the style of the modern games (Stop Start Animation). Puyo sound effects from the Mega Drive can be heard in the Background, with the occasional stray Puyo flying around.

Atlantis (7th Dragon)
Some Dragons are shown in the background, with Haze being the Dominant Dragon, watching the Fight Unfold. The Crystals in the Stage mean that the floor and background change from Sky Blue to Orange. This also references Sonic & Knuckle's Lava Reef Zone.

Scrap Brain Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog)
The Stage is almost a 1 to 1 replica of the Mega Drive Stage in 16-Bit Style. Only the Floor is done in 3D/HD and Metal Sonic is moving around fixing any broken machinery Sonic destroys (Sonic 1 appearance). Robotnik/Eggman on the stage occasionally comments on Sonic being a nuisance during the fight. Amy on the stage mentions her support for Sonic.

Angel Island Zone (Sonic the Hedgehog 3)
First Round has Angel Island in its original Appearance on the First Act (in 3D rather than in its Mega Drive/Genesis Appearance). The Second Round has the Stage Engulfed in Flames, and in the Mega Drive Appearance. Robotnik/Eggman comments on the joy of destroying things before the second round. Amy will comment on how Angry she is at the destruction if played.

Millenium Tower (Yakuza)
The Stage takes place on the Rooftop where some of the Epic Climax of the games happen in. A Helicopter is whirring in the background with some of the Clans looking on the fight in the middle of the night. Kiyru will comment on needing to end this fight quickly to "Deal with the real Problem" at the start of the Stage. Majima will mock the fighter by saying "I guess I need some practice" before taking his Baseball Bat out, and Ryugi will mention about summoning Tigers if things get difficult for him.

Jungle (Super Monkey Ball)
The Stage is on a Yellow/Green Checkered Tiled Floor, with a Half Pipe Tube running in a corkscrew in the Background. Aiai and the Gang will occassionally roll up and down these pipes during the fight, with a few sound effects as well. The Stage will randomly "tilt" left or right during the fight, making the fighters slide around or jumps feel floatier during the transitions. This can be edited in the Stages Edit Options in the main menu.

Mr X's Mansion (Streets of Rage)

The stage is based on the Final Room in Streets of Rage 2. Mr.X is watching on his Chair with a Wine in one hand, and a Cigar in the other. He will ALWAYS laugh when a Good Character gets Comboed and laugh even harder when they are defeated in Round 1. If there is a mix of Bad and Good Characters in one Team, then he will side with whoever is using a Villain at that moment. Should a Good Character win, he will summon Shiva who is then combo'd automatically by the winner, ending with Mr.X getting up with his Gun (the match will then end, leaving what happens next up to your imagination). If you finish Arcade Mode on this stage, then a Black Screen comes up at the end with the words "You are now the Boss, you are Great! There is NO Accounting for Taste".

Inferno (Bayonetta)

This stage has many Mechanical Demons watching on for the fight. If Metatron wins, then the Demons will bow down, proclaiming the Demon as the King. If Cain wins, then he will comment on these Demons being pawns of Amada Corp. If Bayonetta wins, she will comment on "Cleaning up the Shit in Inferno". If Joker wins, then he will knock every Demon down with his Gun and do the Victory Lap as he does in Persona 5.

Tokyo 1940 (Project Sakura Wars)

The Fight takes place outside of the Flower Division's HQ, with Cherry Blossom Petals falling throughout. Round 1 is peaceful with bystanders watching on and clapping for any Good Character and Jeering to Villains. Round 2 has the Hive of Darkness descend upon the stage, and fighting the Flower Division in the Background. Any Sakura Wars character will comment between the Round that "I will help you soon!" in their respective languages. When the battle ends, you will see the Sakura Wars characters move off screen and come back in their Mecha. If Robotnik wins, he does the same, but will comment on him wanting to dominate the world and to "get rid of these pesky demons".

Mementos (Persona 5)

The Stage takes place on the Railtracks of Mementos. Joker's allies are cheering for the Good characters and will mock any character. With Megatron, they will make comments of the Joker taking care of him to create a new Persona from his defeat. If Megatron wins, he will also do the Joker's Victory Fanfare from Persona 5 but with a darker version of the theme. If Yu wins, he will do a similar Fanfare, but with the Persona 4 Victory Tune instead.

Saari (Fantasy Zone)

Opa Opa cameos in the Background destroying the Bases as the characters fight on. Round 2 has Opa Opa Fighting the first boss as the fight rages on. Multiple sound effects are used including the Shop Theme between Round 1 and 2.

Palm Tree Beach (OutRun)
The Fight takes place on the Beach of the first Stage of Outrun. The Ferrari will be seen as well as the Motorbike Driver from Super Hang On, and on occassion Alex Kidd on his Motorbike as well. The SpikeOut Volleyball Team are also watching on from Round 1 and will play their own match in the background by Round 2. Ryo will comment on how the place "Feels like an Arcade".

Floating Raft (Virtua Fighter 2)

Same style and graphics as the Arcade Virtua Fighter 2. There is a Ring Out as well. Cain will mention being worried of falling in the Water if selected first. Shou will mention taking advantage of this situation if selected first.

Radaxian Palace (Alex Kidd)

Alex Kidd's Dad will be watching on the Throne as well as Janken by his side as you fight on. Between Rounds the characters do the Rock, Paper, Scissors game which includes the thought bubbles and Hands. The loser (if selected in the options), loses 1/4th of their health for the chosen first fighter. Ulala in particular will dance to the RPS Tune and say "Chu Chu Chu!"

Shibuya (Jet Set Radio)

The GGs and other gangs are moving around the Background, going over each other's graffiti as you fight on the stage. The Cops are also seen chasing them as you fight. If Beat is defeated a Cop takes him away quickly before the next fighter is placed on the stage in his place.

Daytona Beginners Circuit (Daytona)

The Fight takes place on the Grass across the Racetrack as the Cars pass by. The Hornet is seen as Dead Last in Round 1, by Round 2 the Hornet is 10th and by the end the Hornet wins the Race by coming first.

Dural's Stage (Virtua Fighter)

The Stage replicates the graphics from Virtua Fighter 1, however Akira/Pai/Sarah will mention how the Stage feels nostalgic before any of them fight. Candy will make a comment on the Stage feeling unoriginal if she wins before changing to Honey the Cat. Dural will use a different Victory Pose if she wins on her own stage.

Curien Mansion (House of the Dead)

The Stage takes place in the Hall, with many of the Bosses watching in amusement. Janet will comment before the Match how she needs to shoot some Zombies to clear the Field. If Jackel wins, The Magican will comment on him joining their Ranks with the Potential to move higher. If Janet wins, she starts shooting at the Bosses, getting in "Justice Shots". If Altered Beast wins, he will transform into a Zombie as a joke.

Velvet Room (Persona)

The Fight takes place in front of Idor and his assistants. If Joker wins, Igor's P5 Assistants mock him of being weak. If Yu wins, then he will be complimented by the P4 assistant. If Metatron wins, Igor will take him as a Card instead.

Death Adder's Lair (Golden Axe)
The Stage takes place on Stage 8 just before the confrontation of Death Adder. If DA is played, then he will comment on going "no further" and place a barrier on the mouth of the Entrance in the background. If Kain wins, then he will deactivate the Barrier to enter, if DA wins, he will laugh at the defeated character for not possessing "Golden Axe". If Blaze Fielding is played against Death Adder, then DA will comment if she is Tyris Flair.

Marmota Interior (Valkyria Chronicles)

Maximillian is in the background with the Valkyrian Technology he uses in the Final Battle. If Selavria is played, then he will tell her to get rid of all Intruders, to which she says "Yes, Sire". Round 1 has the Machinary running at Maximum Capacity. By Round 2, these are destroyed by Lancers from Largo with Welkin shouting the Attack Increase Command. If Selvaria wins, she will go assist Maximillian as a unique Victory Pose. If Robotnik wins, he will comment on helping the Gallians only to "Steal the Marmota". If Rent-A-Hero wins, then he will place a Gallian Badge on himself and move to assist the Gallians.

Cruise Ship Crusade (Dynamite Cop/Streets of Rage) - Stage takes samples from both

Half of the ship displays the Kraken breaking loose, with Mr.X's minions trying to fight it alongside any of the Dynamite Cop heroes. A remix of Stage 5 from Streets of Rage will play. If Wolf wins, then he will take out the Dynamite Cops in one attack, with the Minions running away. If Blaze/Axel/Max win, then they take out the Minions scaring the Kraken. If Sketch wins, then he will use his Super Comic Move to knock out both Minions and the Kraken in the Background.

Comix Zone (Comix Zone) - Takes Stages 1 and 2

The Stage takes place between 3 Comic Strips, with Column Panels getting between the fighters every 10 seconds, which need to be attacked. Only Sketch can bypass these with invincibility frames. Enemies are watching on and cheering for the bad guys. If Sketch loses, then Mortus will mock him for a defeat. If Sketch is defeated in fewer than 10 attacks, then Mortus will revive him with full health and tell him to "do better", no matter who he fights. Speech Bubbles appear a lot for Sketch in this Stage.

Planet Sotana (Ristar)

The stage takes place on the Music planet of Sotana. The Medley only completes on Round 3 (if both opponents take one win each). Ristar is in a Snowball Fight with one of the Aliens on Round 2, referencing the Snow Stage. There are Bobbing Bird Hazards on this Stage in Arcade Mode and can be unlocked for regular play. Ulala can predict them with her rhythm style by "Chu"ing to a bobbing Bird a second before it happens. This Stage will always have a CPU Ulala to predict the Hazards. Any Victory ends with Ristar's "Play With Me?" sound effect.

Morning Land (Billy Hatcher) - Changes to Darkness when Dark Raven plays. Can be unlocked

Morning Land's Stage is Dark Raven's final Platform you fight him on, having Black Gunge on the Floor for a more slippery movement. Dark Raven is immune to this but is nerfed by 5% in attacks. Round 3 is always played in Daylight, indicating that Billy Hatcher has won. Billy is seen with the Giant Egg moving around on occasion.

Soft Musuem (NiGHTS into Dreams)

The Stage has a soft floor, which bends out of shape when the Character moves on them (except Jackel). NiGHTS and Reala are in the Background Fighting. if Jackel wins, he will assist Reala in the fight as a Unique Victory Pose. Fighting on this stage can create A-Life Nightmarians that assist either Good or Bad Character who created them, by regenerating HP slowly, nerfing certain moves, stopping attacks or reversing controls for 5 seconds. Robotnik/Eggman if he wins will stroke one Nightmarians Head akin to a Chao from Sonic Adventure 2, complete with the "Yush" sound.

Basel (Resonance of Fate)

The Fight takes place in an Abandoned Factory with Machines fighting Vash, Zypher and Leanne in the Background. If Sketch wins, he will replicate Vash's "If tha was Wrong, I don't wanna be right" quote. If Bayonetta wins, she will state how ridiculous and out of style the characters look. If Cain wins, he will comment on why they hate Robots so much.

Game no Kanzume Otokuyou World (Game no Kanzume Otokuyou) - Rotates the Stage with different games from Game no Kanzume Otokuyou

The Floor has the colours of the Mega Drive and Master System layout. The Background changes every 7 seconds to different games featured from the collection. If the Otokuyou Girl wins, she will summon each Sprite from the Game around her and change the background to herself. If the Ninja Princess wins, she will change the Background to her own game and Artwork respectively, or on occasion, show herself as Papri and change it to Girls Garden instead

SEGA Logo (SEGA) - Background is the Creepy Sonic Wallpaper from Sonic CD

The Fighters Fight on the SEGA logo with the Creepy Background. The SEGA chant is heard at the end of each round with the Easter Eggs of the Modern SEGA chant and Ringo from Puyo Puyo saying it. If Amy or Robotnik win, they will comment on how creepy Sonic looks on the Background and DEMAND SEGA change this!

PSO Hub (Phantasy Star Online)

The Hub Stage has many MMO players in the Background begging for Trades, Weapons and Missions pulled from PSO2's Servers. The MMO players can come between the fighters but will clip through them, as a sort of "troll" tactic if played online. if Red Ring Ringo wins, she comments on the MMO players being annoying. If Shou wins Round 1, he changes the music to the Burning Rangers theme for PSO. At Christmas Time, the stage changes into a Christmas Themed Hub instead.

Girls Garden (Girls Garden)

The stage takes place on a modern looking Girls Garden game. If Ninja Princess plays, her face changes to Papri instead, and makes noises from the game. If Otokuyou Girl wins, she changes the Palette of the background to her Title Screens instead and laughs.

Aircraft Hangar (After Burner)

The Stage takes place on the Hanger where Jet Fighters are regularly flying off and back onto the platforms in the background. The Fighter Planes have the logos of the Fighters Chosen on the wings.

Columns Garden (Columns)

The Stage background has the Greek Motif of the first game and changes over time to the Title Screens of each game as well as the Modes being played like a Demo. If Dark Prince Wins, he will comment on Puyo Puyo "Not being played this way!" or will comment on how Arley will play this new game.

Yokosuka Harbour (Shenmue)

A Stage based on the last parts of Shenmue. If any Virtua Fighter Team play, then the Stage becomes more Polygonal like the Saturn Shenmue game. If Akira plays and Ryo, then Akira will take on Ryo's original Look, making Ryo comment on copying him. If Ryo wins anyone, he will say "I will have my revenge". If Joe Musashi plays against Ryo, Ryo will comment on Joe "looking familiar".

Alien Infested Lab (Alien Syndrome/Alien Storm)
A stage based on Alien Syndrome, but also has Aliens from Alien Storm. Characters from both games and Quartet are in the background fighting the Aliens with one another. The Floor will occasionally be slimed by an Alien in the background. Epsilon-Eagle if he wins will take out the aliens in one move across the background screen, with the Words "Visualshock! Speedshock! Soundshock! Your Mega Drive Heart is on Fire!"7

The Outrigger Arena

The Stage takes place across the Arena over 2/3 Rounds. The characters from Outrigger spectate and move around the characters during the match.

Space Harrier

The Stage takes place in The "Fantasy Zone", the background moves around in a 3D plane, showing the various Enemies and The Harrier blasting them to protect the fighters. He can accidentally collide into a character if they jump too high.
Just a few ideas from myself if they ever wanted to do the ultimate Fanservice 2D Fighting game for SEGA fans. :)

What do you think? Could you add more to this!?!?

Disclaimer: I have noticed a number of posts saying "X character isn't in, why did you omit X?", "This should be more X than Y". Please remember that this is all for fun (and it took me 3 hours of my free time!) and I like to hear other people's opinions on what they would like if mine isn't quite the dream game. I am very open minded and I am willing to add stuff on the OP for people, but please provide constructive criticism!

The Persona crossover would be absolute killer, velvet room as an arena!? You kidding me!? 🔥

SEGA Fans, where you at!? Your boy just dropped a killer thread. We need a SEGA COMMUNITY OT.

"Sarah Bryant - Easter Egg changing her name to Samus? "
Yeah no. It is bad enough her DOA model gets used for porn AS Samus. :(

They have done 2d fighters and they were awful. Most of them stayed on the arcade, thanks for that (special mention for the 3d one with 2d sprites, one of the wost thing i've seen🥶). Then, they came back with Eternal Champion on MD 😑, and CD 👍... and the SEGA Activator 😂... and Virtua Fighters 2 in 2d! 😱

If there is one thing i'd hope for SEGA is to never create a new 2d figters again by themself. We rather need a new Virtua Fighter for next gen.

While for Atlus is the opposite story (Persona Arena and the Groove on fight serie were fantastic) and i like what you wrote op. 👏

Seriously, that was so comprehensive that it's not so much a thread as a game design document. Unfortunately I was a little too young to get into the whole 2D fighting scene the first time around when SF2 came out, and have never managed to get into it since, so don't have too much to say regarding game mechanics or modes. That said, I would love to play something like this.

Sega's AM2 did actually produce a 2D fighter in 92/93 to cash in on the Street Fighter 2 craze. It was called Burning Rival, and while the animations and backgrounds were pretty good for the time, apparently the gameplay itself was pretty mediocre. The character designs look pretty generic too, with these two being a pretty obvious rip-off of ChunLi and Ryo/Ken (the female character even gives a little coquettish giggle when she wins):

NyLYWqD.jpg

I guess they just gave up on the series once Virtua Fighter became a smash hit.

I would like an elevator stage from Streets of Rage, revealing more and more of the city lights as the stage moves up. A kid Chameleon stage and character could be fun (especially being able to change costumes and abilities). I know some people are down on the game nowadays, but Altered Beast characters (the tiger, dragon and bear monsters) and stages (Ancient Greek) might be a good addition. Another idea might be to group by console generations (Master System, System 16 arcade etc) or internal development teams (AM2, Smilebit etc).

It would be interesting to see what 3D characters would look like in 2D (especially Yakuza characters). seeing as you already included Vanillaware characters, it would be fascinating to see what their artists would make of old Sega characters.

Good thing I put them in!

Wasn't sure how a KC game would work though. I went with Mr.X because it was a suitable stage but yours sounds much better!

I tried for nore Humanoid characters and felt that Sonic gets enough love so tried to opt for Amy/Robotnik here.

Bunko has a reference in Selvaria's moveset because it is mostly a licensed game.

Samus is a cheeky "take that" reference more than anything for people who either laugh at or be triggered by.

Given that Power Instinct is a good 2D fighting game, SEGA can ask ATLUS for references before submitting to ASW.

Alex Kidd would be hard to add movesets to but a reference would be more suitable for this with a Stage.

I will add more franchises when I got time! I tried to get the better known ones first in before I looked into everything else.

Eternal Champions, Outrigger. I will get those in.

With Space Harrier, perhaps it an be added into the Fantasy Zone stage where it changes to the levels of SH as they are directly linked?

Ark System Works ? No thanks. I am Sega player, I play only good games :messenger_winking: :messenger_fire: :messenger_sunglasses: :messenger_ok:

3 on 3 2D fighter ? This is the worst type of gameplay that happened to fighting games in my opinion.

Great thread idea though, I like the selection of characters.

If a Sega All-Stars Fighting game gets released, it needs to be representative of the legacy of Sega in the genre. Which means 3D gameplay close to Virtua Fighter. Arenas with walls (this could be expanded, Virtua Fighter 3 arenas were not flat). And a three buttons gameplay. These are the basics of what defines their fighting games.

It's funny as one poster says that SEGA can't make great 2D fighting games, and you are against the one Developer who makes pretty great looking 2D fighting games! XD

My personal choice would be Vanillaware/ATLUS to be honest, they can make great Art if they had to adapt!

I picked it as King of Fighters is one of the main crossovers you see that works. I think 3 vs 3 is better for a massive crossover vs 1 on 1, but I do like the 3D idea! It'll likely cost more to make them though.

I would say a flat arena is more budget like to get more content in the game, but a 3D Arena would be nice if they can do this for all stages, but perhaps do this on the Saturn/Dreamcast/Modern Console IPs and leave it 2D for the Mega Drive/Master System?

The nichest of the niche would appreciate what is going on here, but it would sell like shit! :(

I am a bit difficult as far as fighting games are concerned anyway. I don't like anything recent and find that the genre did not make any significant progress since the end of the Dreamcast days. 2D & 3D.

The best 2D games out there are still the SNK games for Neo Geo, Capcom on CPS-2 and nothing comes even close to these.
For 3D, my go-to games would be Dead or Alive 5/6 and Virtua Fighter 5 FS. Otherwise, anything recent is not worth it. The genre did not evolve much since the Dreamcast days. Soul Calibur is still the best in the series.

Of course that's only my opinion.

So something like Virtua Fighter 5 FS extended with the fantasy of Fighters Megamix, and more expansive arenas, would work the best for me.

Ah right, fair enough. What do you think of Groove on Fight? I am loving that game so far!!!

I like me some Metal Slug I'll give you that. Although I do like some of these indies giving us some new 2D Artstyles as well

I love SC as well from what I remember of it, but I grew up playing Tekken 3 which is pretty great as well.

You have great taste anyway!

He hates "modern anime" I think.

Ah right. I am not exactly a fan of the newer stuff but I do like some of the stuff like A Silent Voice (relates to a real life scenario I got myself in), and Durarara!

I am pretty Retro though.
