Losing first only makes his gauntlet that much better.

Valmaster will stop him for sure

I hope

Man the casual reaction to sfv is strangely negative...all I seen about it is how it looks like sfiv or console war bullshit. Not a lot of genuine interest or excitement seemingly.

Hope this doesn't turn into a 3s scenario where the General public doesn't give a shit anymore.

Don't worry, GAF reaction doesn't represent the casual reaction.
If you go by GAF taste most games should all be about loli anime 2d girls.

It's pretty clear that both SFIV and Marvel 3 artstyle were extremely popular with the casual audience. SFV will sell well as long as it has a meaty single player content, that's the most important thing for the casual audience.

No but it does represent the "hardcore" majority, or however you want to classify video game enthusiasts.

I think it represents an echo-chambered subset of the hardcore, but FAR from the hardcore majority. I think the hardcore majority hates/would hate GAF on principle.

Yup. GG guard bar serves the same purpose with more interesting results. The pressure felt by the defender becomes very real once they see that bar flashing violently, and the longer they're under those conditions, the more likely they'll try to escape pressure doing something stupid - ID out of a corner, 2P/2K etc. Once they finally get opened up, you're essentially rewarded with a training mode combo. It feels so effing good. Compare that landing Ultra because you got beat up for half a round or mashing X-Factor out of block string and running through an entire team. You can't.

That said, I've always LOVED the guard break mechanics of Soulcalibur 2. I'd like to see a 2D fighter go that route. I know Mr. Karate has some form of dedicated Guard Break move, correct me if I'm wrong, but typically, GBs in 2D fighters are tied to something more universal, yet are less prevalent.

Oldschool gameplay is so much more rewarding. Please let SFV help bring it back. We don't need it to "reintroduce" casuals to fighters again.

I like KOF13 guard break - it happens pretty quickly, but not too quick. Enough that you get a sense that you "wear out" the defender until they just can't take more. It feels ok in part because KOF has a bunch of ways to get out of the corner and has guard cancels - you just have to pick your spot wisely and fast before you get tired.

And yes, Karate has a dedicated guard break move - his EX palm/fireball. It's sadly a pretty impractical thing, but ex palm combos are therefore really swag (props to Salim, a French Iori/Karate/Kim player who keeps finding ways to land EX Palm, Neomax in high level matches). IIRC Ryo's Neomax also deals enough guard damage to always break the opponent's guard - it serves no actual purpose because it happens in the middle of the hit animation but really drives home that you got hit HARD. There's a reason he yells "Ichigeki - Hissatsu!" while doing it :D

The top 4 GOTY picks from last year are the same between GAF and enthusiast review/press. Starts to deviate a bit further down. This forum isn't some special snowflake. Once your sample size covers enough of the forum userbase the results become pretty damn average.

Except the gaming media has morphed into this weird extension of the internet noise-chamber that GAF leads, and is itself not a voice for the larger gaming core anymore. We're a niche inside the core, and if we weren't, Platinum games would sell and Assassin's Creed games would not.

To put this another way: Don't you have friends who learn of all the new games and announcements from you? Gamers who don't participate in any internet enthusiast stuff, but buy consoles and play games anyway? They make up the larger consumer base.

It really doesn't.

It's just a big echo-chamber where people bitch and moan about every game and publisher and make drive-by snarky posts.

The people who post on GOTY threads are not the folks who post regularly, most of them are lurkers.
The biggest example: Metal Gear Solid 4. MGS4 gets shitted on every freaking time it's nominated, it's basically one of the worst game ever according to this board, yet it won two times the GAF GOTY.

Would you not say that is the casual audience?

It really doesn't.

So it doesn't except when it does? Ok, a bit arbitrary for my tastes though.

That's the normal reaction.

That said, I do think SFV isn't going to expand the pie- this game needs to be about hooking folks who got into FGs with SFIV as FGC folks, and that means fixing SFIV's mistakes and adding something new without screwing it up. Not an easy task.

Why are you completely ignoring my example?

Your example is that the opinion of the user base is invalidated by the opinion of the user base. I honestly don't know how to answer that other than possibly reconsider how you chose to interpret the observations.

I don't understand why you are trying to be an ass, so let me explain it again since English is not my first language and maybe I'm missing something.
You say that GAF represents the "hardcore" majority, I answer that that's not true, then you post the list of the 2013 GOTY saying that it's similar to the critics GOTY.
My answer is that the people who vote on GOTY threads are not the regulars who post everyday, ex. MGS4, if you open a topic about MGS4 most of the posts will be "worst MGS ever", "ruined the series", "there's not a MGS4". This is a game that won the GAF GOTY not once, but twice. Another extremely hated game here is Tomb Raider 2013, yet it made the Top 10. This should tell us that those who post regularly in this board don't even represent the GAF majority, so how can they represent the "hardcore" majority?

Alright so regarding that video :

- Time / Weather effects in stages
- Release date : 2016, before the end of the fiscal year.
- Unreal Engine 4
- The new mechanic is named V-Trigger : You can change your stance.
- 16 characters
- No Super Street Fighter 2X + EX (Updates kinda like League of Legends / Killer Instinct)
- The story mode will be way much better, they know they fucked up with sf4.
- The PC version is here mostly because they want to bring the game to Latin America, South Asia, Africa...

They understand the struggle

Also, I'm cool with 16 characters, and if they will follow the LoL model we'll have more in the future

Then I want you to prove that those people don't post regularly or that they are not involved in the discussions that happen on this forum.

I understand what you are trying to say but I don't agree with it. I hate the "silent majority" argument but there is merit to it. People can complain about MGS4, can criticise it because there are parts of it they don't like, maybe they liked previous entries in the series more. This does not prevent them from putting it on their GOTY list. People who are satisfied with the game don't have any incentive to voice their satisfaction, there might not be value in arguing against the detractors.

I'll go with the same anecdotal example as you did.

There above is the same contradiction. People who complain are also the participating in the thing they complain about. In part this is people who are trolling, in part there are genuinely dissatisfied fans who still engage with their favourite franchise. You can't take things at face value, you can't believe people when they voice their opinion. Nobody is entirely honest. They might not be lying intentionally or on purpose but you need to scrutinize what they are saying, how they say it and how it fits in with the larger picture.

Is MT Framework dead? And stances? O=

So that won't be time/gauge based? How many stances will Gen have?

I have the feeling they will go crazy with the characters, not as crazy as SFIII but similar. Like, 6 classic characters + 4 oddballs + 6 new characters

Wait, what video?

And 16 characters sounds about right. That's close to what SF4 launched with right?

Edit: oh nm, its right there

This would be a good mix.
I'd prefer not to see mostly classic SF2 characters at release. Mix it up a bit with some unexpected picks and new characters.

Gaffers don't even play games, only talk about them. So I don't know why anyone needs their opinion validated by them.

Yup, but with Gouken and Akuma as secret time-locked characters in the arcade version which brought the number to 18. And Seth, maybe?

Wow, a lot of Japanese studios seem to be utilizing Unreal 4 rather than their own in-house engines. I wonder if Panta Rhei is really that unreliable :/

16 characters is a great number to start assuming they are balanced well. Hope it's half returning half new.

Fixed and added >:)

SF and GG are the kind of games where matchups can be very "heavy", and in those games a smaller cast is ideal IMO. The 40+ SF4 and TTT2 have is nightmarish.
