Week of May 4th to the 10th, 2015.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well. If you are looking to see what events are coming up past this week, check out the FGC Event Calendar that our own Malice215 put together.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Last year, GAFer Shouta helped organize donations from various FGC-GAF members to send fellow member QisTopTier to EVO. Q suffers from Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, but has always wanted to go to EVO and we're looking to double up this year and send him to EVO again!

If you want to help out, you can check out the details and pledge on this spreadsheet.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at super dragonballjoseph!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Under Night in Birth. One of the most fun fighters to come out in recent years. The mechanics and battle system is great. The only thing really holding this game back for me is the tiers. The top tier are pretty crazy in that game. I mash my face against my stick to play Ultra from time to time still.

My favorite fighting games are Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Soul Calibur 2/V. I just really enjoyed the mechanics in those games. I'd play long sessions of TvC with a friend of mine back in college. I played Tekkaman Blade/Chun. In SCII, I played Talim, and in SCV I played Viola.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I like GRID from Under Night. It's a system that essentially makes you earn the ability to cancel specials and stuff. So it adds another dynamic to the game. Least favorite feature is being able to FADC out of blocked specials in SF4. It just promotes dumb play.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I didn't really "get into" fighting games until SF4. The only reason I got SF4 was because I wanted some achievements, and the game was on sale for 20 bucks, so I picked it up. As far as other games I play, I mostly do platformers (I speedrun a couple), JRPGs, and play bad card games (Hearthstone).
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Lili from Tekken. I just think she's a cutie pie.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I'm a very calculated player. By that, I mean I am able to understand someone playstyle relatively quickly. This helps me decide when I want to hold up forward on my opponent.
I'm in a Ph.D program now, so I don't really go out much to play (and not many people around me), so I play online.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is that I don't let my opponent train me. My biggest weakness is that I don't care if I win, I just want to make my opponent fall asleep while I do infinites on them.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment was when I got top 8 at a major because people didn't know how to anti air. No worst moments since I've never been a competitive player.
What do you want from future fighting games?
Better online. That's about it. Also a sequel to UNIEL would be nice.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Satyamdas
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

Nemo is the only rolento player that makes me wanna play the character. Then I get frustrated when I can't do the ex knives into air raid combo. Probably one of the harder combos in the game

Explanation for the spotlight, since it's been especially shaky recently: Intelliheath declined because he was busy last week however and DBJ didn't PM me back yet, and I don't know if he will, but if he does I'll edit it in. Since I usually get most of the spotlights within the last hour of the week, it is difficult to coordinate to say the least.

I also added Bifu's weekly to OP because why not. I think the weeklies are due for another cleaning. So much stuff that has been on hiatus like forever.

Thanks Enzo :D
If you have stream links, let me know.

Fitting that "GAF actually plays games?!" week ended with a bunch of us actually playing games. Time to go back to not doing that! D:

ggs you guys. Akatsuki's harem lobby.
It looked more like an S&M club with all of the abuse Akatsuki was getting. -_-

Ggs to everyone. Thanks for letting me fraud it up with you guys.

I gotta stop relying on charged j.c so much lol. Definitely not a safe move to throw out there. Was fun playing living people again after so long. I appreciate the boost Hilda gets in all matchups online.
Hilda is way dumber to fight online -- the fact that 5[C] and 2C is a legit mixup online is just stupid. Not that I'm completely innocent (I swear, nearly every 6B that I did hit, and fake sync cutter into anything doesn't work offline unless the opponent is half-asleep). Online stratssssssss

I can't shield anything against Eltnum on the ground. And if I shield anything in the air, it's too late and it's a green shield. >:[

Has anybody in her caught Hamad's rant about sf4 yesterday on his bday stream. He said nobody knows how to play and it's getting on his nerves. He was attacking the game for not having a true training mode. And how some people just yolo online and off line. What do you guys think bout that?

I think he should show everyone how to play the game, then.
