Final 3DO (actually Matsushita) M2 control pad

Could someone find as many Next Generation articles on M2 as possible? I know it's a tall order but I (and GAF i think) would sooooooo much appreciate it. I'd so much enjoy realing them again.

Anyway, I found some images of the pre-rendered M2 Car demo

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
this is pretty interesting. learning about unreleased stuff is one of my favorite things about gaming history.

also, it seems like nintendo got a really bad deal with the n64 hardware.

I love learning about unreleased/prototype stuff, it's one of my favorite facets of gaming history as well... really appreciate herzogzwei (one of my favorite posters btw) raising awareness on stuff like this.

Unreleased / prototype console designs are so interesting for some reason. Need to look for similar threads.

I should make a huge post about all the unreleased consoles, or at least the ones that are interesting, but I've got obligations :/

perhaps at a later point when I have more time.

Would really look forward to that if you did. I've always been a history nut, but gaming history is something I never really pursued very much, maybe because I felt like I lived so much of it. Then a couple of months ago my parents found a box full of my SNES games with their manuals, a Rainbow: The Color Computer Monthly Magazine from July 1987, and a barely aged Next Gen magazine from June of 1998 with a fascinating article about the supposed future of gaming.

...hate me...
^ I also love the subject and actually I created a thread about it more than 4 years ago (shit, I'm old!).

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=209512&highlight=

Unfortunately on those kind of threads a lot of pictures lose their hosting over time.

A vastly encompassing thread (or even a wiki) with freshly hosted pics on the subject would be very nice.

Neogaf should totally have wikis.

Despite the dead images, just what I was looking for. Thanks.

Cool! I'm gonna read that thread later tonight over coffee ^__^

Celine, not to be a bug or impatient or anything, but how long until you have that zip ready?

I cannot wait to read those articles again.
Well I went to bed lol.

In the last few years I've read many old mags and took images of unreleased stuff.
I haven't take every info or article on M2 because I wasn't really interested but here is what I have on my HDD:

Also there was a long and interesting interview with Trip Hawkin on an old Edge issue:

Too bad the service went bust.

Lazy8s

The ghost of Dreamcast past
I remember that short Intelligent Gamer article back in the day as being one of the influences that sparked my interest in semiconductor technologies like eDRAM.

Unfortunately, only those less impressive Power Crystal screens could've been real-time. The first two are clearly pre-rendered, though maybe using some game assets.

The amount of subjectivity in news articles of behind-the-scenes video game lore, like the Nintendo-CagEnt story, is amusing. Considering an author will typically have a single industry insider as their primary source to an article of this kind and not have people on all sides of the matter readily available, it's somewhat understandable. However, the writer typically also lacks an adequate understanding of the context for that subject matter, so their interpretation is easily slanted. From reading these kind of reports, a person could easily come away thinking that the M2 or the Cobra Arcade board or the Nuon or whatever was unrivaled technology for its time, when the reality of what some of their competitors had cooking made the situation quite different.

God i wish the M2 and MX had come out. I would've loved that in 1996(M2) and 1998/1999 (MX). While I love this thread, it just makes me very depressed :/

Mr Swine, oh here it is! ^__^

Wasn't this image used on the cover of a GamePro or some other magazine in the mid-90's? Maybe EGM or GameInformer, but I'm leaning towards GamePro. Also, for some reason I thought "Project X" was the name used for the Nuon and always remembered that image being associated with the Nuon, not anything 3DO-related. My memory is failing.

EDIT: Wait, it was Nuon! I missed a part of Herzogzwei's post.

Herzogzwei, your threads are pretty kick ass when it comes to old stuff. I lurk a lot but seeing threads like these is pretty awesome. Please keep bringing them on!

That looks like an aborted N64 controller. :/ The 3DO kind of sucked for all intents and purposes. Tons of porno games, a good NFS title, and...a few other 3DO published titles that were interesting at best. The M2 is an interesting footnote in history considering D2 made its way to the Dreamcast after this console got canned.

The best Road Rash game ever made the system worth it.

Looks like the CG (non real time) from that area. Must've been impressing back then

That old SGI Nintendo story is cool too. Makes the Cell/Microsoft thing look not that bad in comparison

Hey!

That was my joke.

I should've lol'ed.

Anyway, here's EGM's Quartermann's (Steve Harris) take on the MX chipset, I think this was from 1997.

I know you all cannot read that so I've got it typed out for you guys ^__^

The new hardware picture wouldn't be complete without including 3DO, so we'll now shift gears over to the MX. Like the M2 before it, 3DO claim the MX will be its generation's top gun. Our Q-spies report that the M2's successor is already past the design document state and is actually living breathing hardware. At the moment, the MX chipset is physically huge (it can barely fit on a good-sized table) but once 3DO gets all the bugs out, they'll work on reducing the size (common practuce in the hardware biz). By all accounts, the MX is a screamer, with close to 5 million polygons boogying around the screen at once. Not only can the MX produce N64/M2-type graphic effects like Trilinear Mip Mapping and Edge Antialiasing, but it can handle such esoteric realtime graphic functions like Anisotropic filtering, Phong-Lighting and Surface Antialiasing. The secret to the MX's ultra-high performance lies in its radical hardware architecture. Unlike all others before it, the MX's RAM is incorporated into the same chip as the CPU and graphic processor. Set up in this manner, game information can now run at the same clock speed as the CPU (a 110 MHz Power PC 604) or the graphic processor (which is basically a 128-bit ASIC). The MX is less than a year away from completion, but 3DO has already shown the technology to a large Japanese software company who has shown interest in developing for the machine and perhaps even buying the hardware rights outright. The mystery software company is led by a certain Mr. Hironobu Sakaguchi, but you didn't hear it from me.
