So I ask you, why do you love it?
Like you rightly say, a big aspect is nostalgia. In my opinion it has the best soundtrack by a mile of any FF game. The story isn't amazing but coupled with the soundtrack it becomes special. Also, the atmosphere of the game is up there with the best of any game too, especially the parts in Midgar.

I'm curious, and I don't mean this to sound antagonistic (Im just as excited for the remake as anyone) but why is FF7 so beloved?

I've played the FF series since 1. I've played them all (main line) and beat most of them. I haven't liked a FF since 10.

My favorite being 4 (love dedicated roles, but I'm an old school D&D as well). Next is probably 6 (bigger story but loss of dedicated roles). I waffle on if I liked 7 or 8 more.

What does 7 bring to the party? Aside from it being many "new" gamers first FF and it being the first 3D FF.

Seeing the chatter all I really see repeated is "LOL Cloud in drag" and "Poor Aeris." That's it. What about the overall story? Which lets be fair was a tad of a mess but hey new version is getting a rewrite, so maybe awesome? (FF13 writing horrors aside)

I remember back when this came out and the big love for Sephiroth whom I felt was a tad trope-y but hey long ass katana and bad ass, works for me.

So I ask you, why do you love it?
Some of the best characters in any FF game in my opinion.

I've played them all too, but 7 is my favourite in regards to plot and story progression.

Starting in Midgar was great.

Basically, FF7 killed the Sega Saturn.

Imagine a game able to kill off a console.

And it also was a major Nintendo betrayal from SE.

When people heard about FF7 only on PSX, its sales skyrocketed.

It was the first polygonal FF and made use of the increased capacity of cd-roms.

Needless to say the game itself is the most influental JRPG ever made (Story, gameplay, Tech-wise).

It's what GTA 3 is to GTA1/2 and the mind-blowing revolution it brought with it.

I think it had to do with the amount of excitement leading up to that game. Very few games deliver on that, and we went from a 15 minute demo of the opening boss, included with your purchase of Tobal No. 1 to an absolutely massive world and story. It was the first 3d FF game, and it was just so memorable for people who were ready to play it at the right time. Someone who missed it, and went back 10 years later would get none of the feeling... that excruciating wait for release... that excitement of leaving Midgar and having the whole world open to you (in a linear fashion).

It's hard to explain really. I'm 38 years old, and this game came out when I was 20, so it was just the right game at the right time- the stars aligned. Not much else I can say.

So once again we have polar sided opinions about a game that is extremely hard to bring to us.

One side believes that any changes to its battle system, story, mini games, ect. would ruin the game.

One side believes the game being made at all is enough for them, and any changes that may need to be made are welcome, and probably good for the game.

We really can't have nice things if the trifecta of holy games was laid in our lap and we still find reasons to complain.

I can understand where people wouldn't want change, but I can't agree with it.
This game is almost 20 years old, and in that times new more engaging methods have been realized for story telling.
Combat in FF games has slowly evolved over the years, and many newer iterations are very suited to work for a FF7 remake.
Mini games would have to be COMPLETELY redone in my mind.
Squats?
Come on. We have way more ability today, and could have some pretty complex game mechanics going into these.

Just because FF7 was so awesome 18 years ago doesn't mean its aged well.

Why should they waste time making complex mechanics into a one off minigame?

I don't like the mindset that modern = better. There is definitely an opportunity to change things, and they should, but they shouldn't change them because things are done different now. They should change things as they see fit where it would make for a better experience. This might mean putting a modern spin on certain aspects, sure, but new is not better, complexity is not better than simplicity, and change for change's sake should never be something one desires.

And people keep saying it hasn't aged well, but since it's constantly selling, and has consistently sold well based on digital charts we get, it's obvious that there's still an audience for the game. The battle system itself is still fun. The problem is how easily certain aspects are exploited.

This is Street Fighter 5 situation it seems, so PC is the only other platform it's coming to...
The PC version of SFV was announced during the first reveal of the game.

The game is coming to PC and Xbox One, no doubt for me

Source? Because right now it doesn't look like it's coming to Xbox.
No sources, just my own opinion ^^

If the game was a console exclusive for Sony, trust me, they would have announced it.

Especially if sales of SE's first current-gen JRPG release are hugely in favor of PS4. I suspect the performance of XV will have some impact on whether VIIR gets an XBO release (assuming it isn't already a non-starter due to Sony funding or something similar).

why is there doubt or disbelief in this coming to xbone?
Apparently its being Funded by Sony, That being said The HD port was also Sony exclusive excluding PC.
Which leads me to believe Sony must have some kind of deal regarding FFVII in general on consoles.

Your opinion isn't based in reality.

forgive me for the ignorance, who is that?
so sony funded enough for the devs to pass on a port for xbone, but not enough for PC?

i'm guessing sony isn't helping to fund that port as well?
Sony doesn't see PC as a competitor, they're funding SFV and that is also coming to PC.

If Im not mistaken the only game from the japanese side of SQE announced for XB1 after that pre-launch E3 with FFXV and KH3 has been Type-0 HD to sell a demo.

I don't know if it will come out, but I wouldn't be so sure.

The reality is : the game is " coming FIRST on PS4 ". it's coming later on other platforms. Just be logical.
It could just be PC later, like the original. I'll just wait a see how Sony answers the question when asked, if they dodge it,it's probably coming to the Xb1 too.

Sony is helping fund the game. It MAY come to PC but there's no reason to think it's going anywhere else if they are putting money into it.

This is different than the Tomb Raider situation

Kagari also said the other SE announcements (Star Ocean, NieR being PS4 only) should tell you where their focus is

I am being logical, Kagari said it ain't coming to Xbox. First on Playstation means a PC version is possible, but after the fan reaction Sony is probably going to lock it down as a full exclusive.

The variety of characters with strong stories of redemption for one, and good dialogue, which is definitely a trait of the good FFs. Also the setting was a fantastic creation of cyberpunk, steampunk, and fantasy.

There is a nice mix of gender, and even species, that has at least one character everyone can relate and like. There are also great supporting characters that even get killed off, and no I'm not talking about Aeris..thh.
losing Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse sucked man...also Dyne was cool too, and was essential for Barrett's background.

The music is so good it can get me teary eyed, but maybe that's just because I'm a musician and have a strong passion for it.

The gameplay ranged from ATB, with materia for summons and magic, and my Godcannon the limit breaks, to giving cpr, racing Chocobos, heck even breeding chocobos, Submarine battles, snowboarding, motorcycle fight, rail shooter, battle arena, and even more.

So, I could go on for days but those are main reasons why it's so special to me.

My favorite character is Red XIII, because native American cat-dog-lions are the shit.

and why ? why " other platforms " can't mean Xbox One ?

FFXV is coming to Xbox One, KH III too, there is no reason.
Come on. Kagari said it's not coming to Xbone so for now, it's not. This may or may not change later, but that's the reality of the situation right now.

Quoting myself:
FFXV and KHIII were announced when SE wanted to cover their assess in the next generation hardware race. Rather than make both projects exclusive to either console, they made sure they announced the release on both consoles to cover both bases. I mean really, how does the Xbox One get Kingdom Hearts III when the series has never touched a Microsoft console. Now, with the generation skewing towards PS4 world wide, it's safe to say that Square is more open to the idea of Sony exclusive games.

These games were coming to XBO before S-E saw the performance of some titles on XBO.
Now probably they think the things better, see Star Ocean, see Nier 2.

Reposting these

Sony is helping funding this.
Sony is throwing a lot of money around Japan. Look at Nier 2, Star Ocean 5, Street Fighter 5, Shenmue 3, World of FF, etc etc. They want Japan to stay relevant on consoles.
Yes, it's going to keep happening too so people should get used to it because otherwise these games would not be happening.
SE's other Japanese announcements at E3 this year should have been clear where their direction is heading.

Ok, thanks ! nevermind
No worries. They were posted in a different thread so no doubt many people missed them

It's important to note that even though she has connections this information isn't definitive (and I'm sure she would advise against taking her words as 100% fact), even if it's true right now, things change. But at the moment that's how things look

I agree with most of what you said. People have rosetinted glasses about FF7's battle system but really, it feels dated. The characters themselves are awesome, but there's nothing in the battle system that differentiates them from one another. Somehow Nomura and the team will have to make the characters each feel unique and also implement the materia system, which is no doubt a hard task to do.

But you don't fuck with the squats.

I think SE would have been pretty open about a Xbox One release like they was with FFXV and KH3.
But even in the recent interviews their focus is PS4 regarding anything.
I can see more exclusives coming, it's gonna be like the PSX era again.
