Final Fantasy V is now playable on North American Vitas

No, it's not any better than what is was on PSone. I don't even own the PSN release, and I feel safe in saying that. But hey, at least eventually you can have the first ten Final Fantasy games on one device.

Now we just need FFXII HD and it's the best handheld ever.

Ok, it's not, but it would be fucking awesome.

Just a heads up. Lock if old.

Can't find it on the store though, so that means you still have to buy it on your PC or PS3 and then look for it on your Download List on your Vita.

All credit to Shinriji from the Vita thread who found out about this.

What's the general consensus on V? Everyone blows their load over VI but I don't hear much about V

You must have missed the yearly Final Fantasy V 4 Job Fiesta on NeoGAF then. The game is absolutely great, lesser emphasis on the story, more on the job system. It's my favorite out of the SNES ones.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

This has been a huge thorn in my side because of my OCD. I own all the digital versions of FF on PSN, 1 through 9, but it was SO annoying that I couldn't get all of them on one page on the Vita.

V isn't story driven, doesn't have any aesthetics or style to speak of and has the greatest job system the series has ever seen.

It's definitely worth playing but the GBA version would be preferable to this one.

Not sure about the general consensus (many on GAF go apeshit over FFV, IX, & XII), but my opinion is:

+ Great gameplay/innovative JOB system/Gilgamesh
- Lazy story/forgettable characters

I'm convinced if FFV would have been released as FFIII on the SNES in '93 I probably would have been disappointed with it as a follow-up to FFII/FFIV considering how much I loved that game as a kid.
It's also one of my least favorite Uematsu FF OSTs.

So, the PSOne version... Anything I should know?

Horrendous load times when changing screens or before every battle?
A sub-par translation that gets improved in a later re-release?
Extra FMV scenes or remastered music?

Answers in the quote.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
is this the game i want if i want to mindlessly grind battles and dick around in a jrpg?

i like that the story is useless, so i dont have to get too involved

one of the few FF i haven't played

Ten bucks for it is pretty crazy, but it's a great game, so it balances out. If I didn't have the gba cartridge, I'd probably pick it up.

yeah, if you don't care to get involved in the story you should have a good time with it.

Yes to all except for "remastered music." If I remember right, the PSX version actually has inferior music compared to the Super Famicom version.

GBA version is the definitive version of the game, even with somewhat downgraded audio.

The best Final Fantasy. I also disagree that the story is awful or lazy. It's just a lot more straight out fun than other Final Fantasys and way less angsty. I always said, if any Final Fantasy were made into a movie, this one would be the best. It would make a great blockbuster a la the Pirates movies.

Plus, it has Gilgamesh. At his first and best.

Ok wait, the early FF numbering always confuses me...IV was 2 here and VI was 3 right..? so V never came here back then right....and why do people say to play it on the GBA if you can...?

No. GBA version has ugly music, cluttered screen and very small FoV.
Not sure which version you played, but the GBA was a fantastic port all-around.

The PS1 version comparatively had load times, worse sound, and a terrible translation (Faris' pirate speak was really dumb), Oh, and the in-game clock was slower than it should be.

Final Fantasy was released here.
Final Fantasy II and III weren't.
Final Fantasy IV was released here as Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy V wasn't released here
Final Fantasy VI was released here as Final Fantasy III

They finally started releasing them under the same number when VII was released, and they've all eventually been released.

The script for the GBA version of FFV is hilarious.

EDIT: Does this version have the GBA script or the PS1 script?
