I love this soundtrack dearly, but you can tell Shimomura's talents were stretched pretty thin. They should have went the Xenoblade route with a number of different composers.

Such a great soundtrack overall - but I couldn't help but feel the town themes were a weak link. They kinda gave me a "salsa/venice MIDI keyboard preset" vibe..

Soundtrack is easily the best part of that game. Yoko clearly nailed it but Suzuki made some really good tracks and my favorite one: Hellfire.

I still think Somnus Ultima is still my favorite with Dawn and Dewdrops at Dawn coming in close. Hellfire is up there, though. Along with Magna Insomnia.

Yoshitaka Suzuki is my new favorite FF composer/arranger coz of Ravus Aeterna and Hellfire.

Rather than that I actually feel Shimomura may have done most of her compositions years ago (in Versus times?) and others were brought in late to do arrangements (like Shota Nakama) and finish it up for the rushed release. It's very telling that Shimomura only did 5 tracks on her own from start to end whereas with other games that's her normal modus operandi.

Yeah that's probably what it means. It's an arrangement of both the Niflheim Empire theme and Song of the Stars, but Suzuki was the one responsible for arranging them together into one song like this.

I didn't even realize Niflheim Empire was in this too! Guess I hadn't paid much attention to that track before.

Finally we have this info! Thanks OP!

Although I "knew" it all along that the town songs were not composed by Shimomura. And those are the songs that the player will mostly be listening to! And I'm not saying they were horrible songs, but maybe just too generic.

Wow, Shota from the Videogame Orchestra helped arrange a lot of these. Good for him, I remember watching VGO perform around the Boston con circuit back in 2010-11.

After Mobius FF's consistently great soundtrack, I really want Mitsuto Suzuki to play a larger role in the next mainline game's music. His contributions to games like The 3rd Birthday and the XIII trilogy were generally quite good, but as well as having notably strong individual tracks, Mobius' score as a whole is notably stylistically diverse and consistent in quality. A shame about that one regrettable vocal piece...

Since Shimmomura got her chance for XV.

I think it's time they give the chance to Mitsuda.

Okabe and Soken are also good composers. Pretty confident that if they give him the chance, Soken can nail it.

Mitsuda would be great but SE hasn't worked with him in well over a decade. If I were to guess, I'd say they'll offer Hamauzu the job for XVI. They've stuck with freelancers as lead composers since XII in non-MMO FFs.

(Assuming that Soken stays busy with XIV and that's likely.)

Without going into details, I think I can safely say (without mentioning anything I shouldn't, as opposed to factually safely, haha) that the game had a pretty mad sprint towards the finish line, as evidenced by a few other things others have noted (some music being updated from on-disc to day 1 patch, for example) so by the time all the 'complete' information was collected, vetted and submitted for posterity, e.g. soundtrack printings may have already been ongoing, etc.

Ah okay. Well that makes sense. I guess they didn't want to get it wrong when things were changing last minute. Some of the composed/arranged credits probably needed to be worked though as well. It's good to get a final list now and and see who did what. Thanks for the insight

There still are some errors in this listing - Sachiko Miyano very obviously arranged Magna Insomnia (you can basically tell it's her work), and there are some other tracks which you probably could tell someone's arrangement or production involvement. Information on who wrote each set of Latin lyrics would be cool.

But already it's a far better look than the physical release. :)

Soken will probably be busy with FFXIV. Not sure if they will offer it to Hamauzu. It seems like it will depend on which team will work on the next FF.

Toriyama - Hamauzu

Itou - not sure but maybe Uematsu

Matsuno - Sakimoto (don't think this will happen)

Tabata - Ishimoto, I think FFXV he went with Shimmomura cause she was hired for it before he was director and it might cause some sort of blacklash from the community.

Nomura- Shimmomura.

Wait so the music was also mad sprinted? I got the impression a lot of the music was done around 2014-2015 since the game was officially announced on 2013.

What's missing especially is the orchestration credits. Sachiko Miyano orchestrated Luna's theme for example. Really not so sure about Magna Insomnia though.

nope, not quite :V

Also technically, Shota orchestrated the stuff he's credited as arranger on, but Miyano did Magna Insomnia.

edit: on closer inspection, I think several, albeit not all, of the inconsistencies also stem from when the tracks also showed up on Kingsglaive soundtrack, which isn't quite accurate either. That's far more usual in the film world though.

I usually assume that arrangers are doing the orchestrating as well, especially in this age of live instrumentation for video games.
