I've shown PT to a number of friends (always fun with nongamers), but we've never been able to escape the final loop... Until now. The other night, I showed it to someone new, and we finally beat it.
Basically, we just tested different Internet theories until one finally worked. Here's the one that worked for me... I wonder what worked for you?
1) Put on a headset and make sure the mic is not muted.
2) Once you're in the final loop, go straight to the phone.
3) Wait for the clock to strike midnight.
4) Wait for the ghostly sounds to start.
5) Play this into the mic. (No, this is not a joke.)
6) After a minute or so of "Didju rike it," a baby will coo.
7) Take 10 steps, in place (running into the desk) — no more, no less (listen to the thud of your feet).
8) You'll hear the baby laugh a second time. DO NOT TOUCH THE CONTROLLER. Don't even lift it.
9) After a while, the baby will laugh a third time, and the controller will vibrate.
10) Then, the phone will ring. Zoom in on the phone. You'll receive a message and hear a door unlock.
Then you leave the hallway. Then the trailer for Silent Hills (rip) will play.
What a fucking goofy chain of events. Felt ridiculous doing this at 3 in the morning, lol. But that's what made it fun and memorable.
Oh, and be sure to turn off the headset at Step #9 so that your friend can hear the sound coming out of the TV. Another note: You can talk while doing all of the above. Your voice doesn't appear to interrupt the process, so I was telling my friend what I was hearing while doing this, i.e. "I hear rain... Oh my god, it just chimed... The laughter... THE BABY!"
My friend went from hiding behind a couch pillow and asking if we can turn my apartment's lights back on, to cross-referencing guides on the Internet and helping me solve this shit (or cheat through it, as it were... although I figured out all the previous steps, on my own, with other friends). He said that even though he doesn't normally play horror games, he's so intrigued by the story and storytelling that he wants to play the full game. Then I told him the bad news... :-(
So, how did you beat PT? I remember I started a thread here months ago asking the same question, and there was no consensus. Which is why I'm still surprised we found something on the Internet that works.
