Hey folks, as you might have read in that recent Forbes interview, PopCap has been dropping hints that they'll be releasing a gloriously unlikely tower defense/strategy/card game called Plants Vs. Zombies later this year.

Yesterday I got some further details on just what the hell it would be, but, even better, the fine folks at PC Gamer have given me a nice Offworld scoop today with the first screen that they originally printed in late 2007 (but hadn't yet made it online).

Here's the link to the full screen: http://www.offworld.com/2009/03/frond-of-the-dead-the-first-lo.html

And here's the extra background reading: http://www.offworld.com/2009/03/details-emerge-on-popcaps-towe.html

I think you'll agree it is of the same brand of fantastic madness as everyone's favorite Peggle -- I'm hearing nothing but wicked good things.

Mushrooms are not plants, they are fungus.

Plants Vs. Zombies is apparently the name they had to settle on when they couldn't clear the trademark hoops to call it Lawn of the Dead. :(

As mentioned in that second link, there are some card-like aspects, but not quite to the level of any given CCG:

The extent of CCG influence on this game is that the plants/towers you buy are denoted by little card-like UI widgets at the top of the screen. And there's a splash of 'deckbuilding' as you get to choose 5-8 or so of your plants arsenal to use on any given level.

Has any genre gotten so overpopulated and played-out in such a short period of time as tower defense games?

Peggle Nights just released a new level bonus pack today, including one themed around- what else?- Plants vs. Zombies.

I'd say post-Myst adventure games if you look at it from proportion of shelf space.

Short period of time? TD games have been played out since like 2006. Only now people are paying for the exact same experience flash games (and WC3) have been providing for years.

I wouldn't really call it a genre when it was still nothing but a type of WC3 custom map. It sure exploded pretty quickly when it spread to retail though.

Whoa, wicked find -- I haven't played through the pack yet (though I have finally officially seen actual plants in the game itself). I shall update!
