Nothing too surprising on the Japanese list outside hotshots golf. Also Horse racing, wasn't expecting that.

American list is pretty interesting, forgot how popular Rugrats was in the 90's, and that particular game was actually good (not so much the others.) so that's pretty neat. Also, Crash domination, only beaten by pack-in game Gran Turismo

(US sources are multiple threads on Neogaf/NPD data)(Japanese sales are based on Game Data Library archive.)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I've seen this list a few times, but Frogger in the top 10 always makes me do a double-take.

Selling.

I'm not going to lie, based on my friend circles back in they day I would never have expected Tony Hawk to have been more popular than FFVII not once, but twice. Also Frogger????

The worst Atari era remade game on the PlayStation sold nearly 3 million copies what a world. None of the other ones even charted, where's Defender? Missile Command? Q*Bert? Pac Man?

Wow.

The time when racing games, JRPGs, Tony Hawk and platformer jumpers ruled sales.

How the hell does Frogger hit #5 in the US?

Sales[edit]
Despite the mixed reception, the game was a commercial success. The PlayStation version sold 3.37 million units in North America,[11] resulting in the game being one of the best-selling PlayStation titles of all time and subsequently seeing a re-release on the Sony's Greatest Hits lineup. The PC version was also successful, selling almost one million copies within less than four months.[12] In the United States, Frogger's jewel case version for computers sold 510,000 copies and earned $4.3 million by August 2006, after its release in October 2000. It was the country's 27th best-selling computer game between January 2000 and August 2006.[13]

Wow.

The time when racing games,

If you're referring to Driver, that's not a racing game, just Grand Theft Auto missions before Grand Theft Auto, and you can't leave your car. Only racing game I see is CTR. Twisted Metal isn't a racing game either.

Well I guess technically there's Cool Borders.

Not terribly surprising sales really. I loved ps1. Unfortunately, overall its games have aged worse than any console I still played and I play alot of them.

It’s too bad GT isn’t even a thing anymore...
Still the highest selling racing game out there but yes racing games aren't as popular anymore. Now it's all about the shoot shoot bang bang.

Fucking hell, Metal Gear Solid sold poorly in Japan compared to the US.

You're surprised the semi-military game based on a fake US military run by US colonels and references to US military events and no anime art style didn't sell 1 million copies in japan?

Mario Kart.

Also, you;re one of the issues in the industry that pretend most games are shoot bang and don't buy the games that aren't resulting in more shoot bang. (Also Tomb raider is shoot bang.)

Also if anything the chart doesn't show racing games were that popular than just general driving/vehicle games with the only exceptions being GT which was heavily bundled, and CTR.

Racing games arevery popular not, the last real Sonic racing game sold well, MK sells well, GT sells well, Forza sells well, grid sells well, Dirt sells well, the first Project Cars sold well, tons of indie arcade racers doing well. I'd argue racing games do better now then they did on the PSX.

What were the big racing titles that weren't bundled during that time (US)? CTR, Ridge Racer 1 and???

Fair point about MK but the rest, are you talking out of your ass again. Can you somehow see my library of games to be making such a claim?

Why are CTR and GT the exception, you don't you see 2 more need for speeds on your list even if you were to argue that driver 1 and driver 2, twisted metal is just driving elements?

You want popular racing games from then. OK, you mention MK as racing so I assume Wipeout counts, Toca, Test Drive 4, Colin McRae, V-Rally, Destruction Derby, Rollcage, Formula 1.

In general the genre had more of a share of the market, that does not even mean there were more games or gamers/sales than today for the genre but the genre was more popular back then given the market size and games on the market as is seen by your own list having 2 racing games at the top. The pie could be bigger but racing games are now much less of the pie. Back then the genre had a decent share of the top selling AAA games. MK, Formula 1, FZero X was big on the N64. All but one are meaningless now. Daytona, Sega Rally were big for sega, almost meaningless now compared to other genres. Wipeout, GT, CTR, almost meaningless now. The market grew but the genre not at the same rate as the market. Same may start happening for other genres but you'd be mad to deny that racing games were more influential back then especially while staring at this list.

A bunch of games that were not that popular compared to the standard 500k+ selling game is your best response?

Again, there was a bigger racing game in the 360/ps3 times, heck the PS2/Xbox times as well. Also no it wasn't more popular given the market size, this just wasn't the case, there were few big titles across the board even by country, yet the market was exploding, driving games that weren't racers moves 3x+ as much.

To say a game like F-zero X was big on the N64 is showing your lack of knowledge on this issue, yet you're saying I'm wrong which is hilarious.

F-Zero X sold 56k in Japan and less than 400k in the US. That's not a big racing title given that most(90+%) N64 hardware and software sales were in the US and Japan. F1 (I am assuming you mean world grand prix) sold less than that in US, and 21k in Japan.

On consoles neither Daytona nor Sega Rally were big, even including the initial sales rush and the Saturn doing "moderately decent" in Japan. In Japan Sega Rally (which did better than Daytona slightly) and Daytona did "decent" numbers that died off even with continued bundling. outside of that Saturn software sold like crap when looking at sales outside japan. Even in Arcades Daytona was an initial hype tech demo that didn't do that well outside of Japan despite the hype for it, losing to games like Crusin USA in America for example which came out the same year. But of course we are talking about consoles so like I said.

Like I said before 360 era and even the Xbox/PS2 era the popularity was stronger. 3D racing games were still in a "figuring out" phase dominated by games like CTR, GT, MK, DKR, and the first Ridge Racer (and type 4) with some outliers such as 1080, Wave race etc.

When you look at PS2/Xbox/GC charts it's a much bigger share of the market, with the GC being the weakest link of the 3.

Your story just doesn't add up. You even backtrack and try to throw "influential" in a market argument which doesn't make sense because you don't have to do well to be influential.

Where is the EU Top 50?

I bet Gran Turismo and Wipeout are in the Top 10 of that one.

There was a guy who posted the list, but he went REEEE in 2017 and deleted like all his posts.

There might be some earlier threads on EU PSX sales but I can't seem to find them.

We need people to make a Gamedatalibary equal for every country and not just Japan so we always have access to sales numbers. Or to actually use the sales archive forum on this site for more than just NPD and Media create.

None of what you said makes sense or is even relevant. Racing games had a bigger part of the market during the PSX than they do today . Nobody said it was bigger than the PS2 era. What the fuck is the 'figuring out phase' how is that remotely relevant? Look at the N64 and how many big budget racers it got that gen. Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars episode 1: Racing, FZero, F1: World Grand Prix. Diddy Kong racing was a top ten charting game on the N64.

You have GT on the top two of your list, CTR. Are you honestly trying to say they get more love now compared to shooters?

Addressing and dismantling the posts you made that had false information isn't relevant now?

No they didn't, I don't care how much you say it the racing share was bigger this gen, last gen, and the gen before, because you don't know numbers you think no one else knows numbers and can jsut make it up.

Where's your proof? You already mentioned a bunch of games that didn't do well because you had no idea what you're talking about like say F-zero X among others. You were talking about marketshare now your backpedaling toward big budget.

Issues is half your racing games weren't big budget nor did many of them sell well, F1WGC didn't sell well, F-zero X didn't sell well and it wasn't big budget, DKR is the only "great" selling racing game on the system, a game I listed before.

You're literally all over the place here, DKR, CTR, GT1 and 2, Wave Race, 1080p, STEP1 and Cool Borders are all your big racing games that actually sold really well, the biggest games.

Meanwhile GT3 and 4 are the best selling GT games of the series, NFS sold double to triple in sales on PS2/Xbox (and GC) than what it did on the PSX/N64, Ridge Racer, You had Project Gotham, Forza, Burnouts, Midnight Clubs, CClin Mcrae, MKDD, FZGX, KAR, Rallisport etc.

To say that PSX/N64 gen had a bigger marketshare of racing games relative to the time period, then later, or even today, is nonsense.

In fact let's talk about this gens racing games, Forza Horizon 3 and 4, GTSport, and MK8 Wii U alone is already more than around half the PSX/N64/Sat/3DO list alone. We haven't even gotten to the other big games and the Ridge Racer 1 selling games yet, which there are plenty.

Like I said you're one of those guys that don't pay attention to games on the shelf and thing 95% of games are only shoot bang and COD. That's your ignorance not anyone elses.

Nothing your saying adds up when you look at the numbers. Especially the last two gens. Maybe next gen you'll have a point looking at trends.

Freaking Frogger?! Hahaha

Damn, the times are indeed a changing..

JRPGs, fighters and plataformers..

Better times, if you ask me.

NPD there are only 3 Jrpgs on the list tho. All Final Fantasy.

If anything this dismantles the myth that FFVII open the door to JRPG sales in the west. Just Square games, primarily Final Fantasy.

You are salty as fuck. What false information. I see what this is about. Is it because I called you out for making bullshit claims about xbox revealing sales numbers at E3 when replying to ethomaz a few days ago and this is somehow you trying to do the same? Still waiting for those numbers by the way.

Seems like the only explanation for going off on one about "knowing numbers" from me mentioning that racers aren't as popular a genre today as they were back then on a list where GT is first and second best selling PSX games.

I'm not back pedalling, the big budgets were because of the popularity of the racing genre. It's not a new argument, it's the same one. Just as the shoot shoot bang bang games get big budgets today because of the popularity of the genre.

Look at the list here because I know you go around saying you've got the data but present nothing when asked here is an accessible list. I assume because you think US = world they may not align with yours.

Star wars episode 1 racer near majoras mask. Shit seller, why am I even mentioning it, am I right? Above wave race no less a game you mention. what else do we have on that list F1 like I mentioned and Fzero X, besides that Wave race 64, excitebike 64, cruisin USA. But nope I should have mentioned 1080p snowboarding even though it's below. So that's a racing game too I guess according to you? Ok agreed, does that help or hinder my argument? You don't know what you're saying you're arguing for arguments sake.

Enough of this shit either post some numbers or stop pretending things are as you say they are and quietly disappear and forget about the claims you make.

Gotta love how he started his last post going off topic.

Also let's pretend the psxera sold more racing games because racing games that were heavily bundled took two top spots but ignore that the top 20 of every era after had higher selling shares in the genre.

That's the cocaine addict logic.

Star wars episode 1 racer near majoras mask. Shit seller,

You mean the game I mentioned in my last post you decided not to read because you can't win this argument and have to result to lying and being deceptive?

The rest is you using wikipedia numbers over npd/Mc numbers is beyond stupid.

Wow only 13 million selling racing games for 3DO/PSX/sat/N64 compared to 20 million or so on Xbx/PS2/gc but you think the former had better share?? Lol.

Please show me how Fzero X and f1 sold over 1 million if neither hit a million in Npd and both sold less than 80k in Japan.

This is what happens when you rely on Wikipedia without checking sources without putting effort in real research.

Where's Fzero and F1? No where, and both sold less than 80K in Japan, so how the hell did f1 sell 1.5 mill like your wiki article with the broken ref?

Heck, Fzero sold 383K in Npd, look it up its on this site.

F1 didn't even outsell glover in Npd, didn't even sell over 500k. Less than 50K in Japan. Fzero X another game sold less than 500K npd, under 80k in Japan.

Lol "big games" OK sure.

Poor T Three trying so hard to be right but very wrong.

You're forgetting that Europe, Korea, and others still sold software. They had low hardware sales but they also had few games to play and WGP and FZX would be two of those few games.

Chart from Nintendo investor site-

So yes they both sold 1 million but I wouldn't say they were popular since sales in individual regions were poor, but a lot of games got bumps from Europe and Korea due to being the only games on shelves.

However, it is also true there were more racing games topping the charts 6th gen, and they did way better.

NFS Underground 1 sold 7 million copies by itself.

The sequel NFS Underground 2 sold 8.4 million

That's only two games selling close to 20 million copies. Back when NFS was the biggest racing brand in the industry.

6th gen was the biggest for racers by far. But to be honest this debate isn't productive.

Where did you mention star wars Episode 1 show me. Now show this gens racing games share of the market. Don't forget to exclude Forza too which is literally bundled every year.

Also lay off the cocaine it still makes you think that PS2 era is 'today', or do you enjoy the irrelevant points you keep making?

I don't think I've ever tried a WWE/WWF game or whatever they are called, but people sure seem to like them. Perhaps I've missed something.
