Never knew about this being announced last year because nobody posted about it here (or my memory's failing me), but now it's confirmed to be coming out April 25 (US) for 500 points.

Check out this drawing and animation software for the DS (and soon 3DS):
Trailer

From Nintendo's site:
Inchworm Animation is the only full-featured paint and animation system for Nintendo DSi. Five years in development, Inchworm Animation lets you create mind-blowing digital paintings and animations in the palm of your hand. Use the Nintendo DSi Camera to record video, stop-motion animation and time-lapse photography. Paint with transparency and smooth antialiased brushes. Create images up to 9999x9999 pixels! An easy-to-use pattern editor lets you make cool repeating patterns for use in your artwork. Other tools include onionskin, 6-level zoom, cut/paste/rotate, undo, and shape primitives. Inchworm Animation's sophisticated layer system allows you to create structured animated scenes. Each layer can have its own independent frame loop. You can even draw on your animation as it plays! Comprehensive tutorials will show you the ropes. When you're done, export your masterpieces to the SD card.

Features
• Full-featured handheld paint and animation system
• Shoot video, time-lapse and stop-motion
• Create images up to 9999 x 9999 pixels in size
• Export your masterpieces to the SD card

Holy shit that's some robust animation software right there... For 5 bucks? That's pretty insane.

Whoa, that looks awesome. I loved the idea of Flipnote but found it really confusing to actually use, nothing was particularly clear about what it did or what you were supposed to do with it. Will buy this if I've got enough points!

Are there any limits on the number of frames, etc?

Yeah, that does look pretty awesome. I do wish that there was some sort of youtube like component like what Flipnote has. That really does complete the experience.

Actually looks pretty solid. At first I thought why would you compete with free software, but the video makes a good sell.

Yes you can. The game will also be on the 3DS e-shop like all DSiWare games.

Problem is: the application would still run at DS resolution and not support the 3D camera.
They'd probably need a 3DSWare (or whatever it's called) version to support 3DS features.

Fingers crossed for an updated version supporting 3DS resolution and features.
Yeah there are retail DSi titles that use the external camera, so how does the 3DS handle those currently anyone know? Does it disable one of the cameras?

I expect many existing DSiware applications and games to get re-released when the 3DS eShop opens, iPad-style (but "3D" instead of "HD").

That does look very nice. I loved Flipnote Studio.

Hopefully it will work with the 3DS camera (even if not in 3D...)

Whenever the 3DS uses one camera, it will be the left one. (from the manual.)

Also, I may look into buying this. But I still want that BASIC app (PetitCom) :(

Yeah, at first I was like, no way this is compelling enough to compete with the free Flipnote Studio. But after seeing the trailer, I definitely will want to mess around with this. Day one.

To answer my own question, the official site refers to running out of memory. Will wait to hear a few people's experiences before buying.

Pre-order on hold.
Yeah I forgot to add the official site in OP. Added it now. There are some sample animations (bird one looks cool), short FAQ section, and looks like they're trying to implement being able to upload files to their site.

Yeah, I'm pretty sold on this. I wonder if you can do pixel art. That'd be awesome.

F.Edit: You can do pixel art. This might end up being very useful to me.

I also hope for a 3DS Download release. Not just because of the added benefits, but also due to them likely getting more sales.

Why would you do that? said:

I *presume* that when the shop opens, the 3DS will be able to run everything DSiWare does. Although I guess that's not actually set in stone. It'd be really dumb if it didn't, though, and it's not like Nintendo are ever dumb when it comes to online and downloadable software!

that was fucking awesome! and its only $5 to boot! I seriously cant believe that they were able to put all those stuff in one tiny DSiWare app. This seriously needs a 3DSWare version with 3D!

It will. However, some games won't make it over, allegedly due to licensing issues. And, of course, EA's Sudoku, because of Sudokuhax.

But I would imagine that being one of the few 3DS Download games would give them more sales than being one of the many DSiWare games. Maybe there will be a "top seller" list or "recommended games" list like on the Wii and DSi, so it could still gain some exposure.

Hey, this will probably get lost in the madness that is E3 Gaf, but did this meet expectations? Thinking about getting it for my 3DS.

I'm interested in knowing as well. So.... bump! Back to page one. I'll try and find some media or impressions and link to 'em later, but that would probably be sometime tomorrow.

Just noticed this while I was searching the e-shop.

...So any GAF impressions of this yet??? Was thinking about buying this.

I was wondering if it works well on the 3DS? The 3DS zooms DS/DSi games so unless you shrink the image to the native resolution it might be weird drawing on it? I don't know.

Also any news on the 3DS version?

What's next?
I'm going to try to get the European DSiWare release out there. And people are asking a lot about a 3DS version, and I would love to do a 3DS native version. Last summer, in order to get practical and get this thing out there, I had to strip out a bunch of ambitious stuff that was working, like keyframing, a scrolling timeline, sound-effects and audio recording. Obviously it would be nice to restore those and the wireless features if possible. So we'll see, if I find the time and energy to continue with it I would love to have an "Inchworm 3D" out there.
