Ubisoft’s own AC IV is the best single player pirate game ever made, and Sea of Thieves is the best pirate multiplayer game ever made. I don’t know why anyone would choose to play this over those 2 games. Just a game that was always destined to fail.

I grabbed Madden 24 for $10 at best buy instead. I don’t care about having the latest one and you can update the rosters. I try like 1 Madden each generation.

It's crazy to think they made the perfect pirate game with Black Flag all those years ago and simply couldn't keep the mechanics, update the engine and tell a brand new story.. wtf it was all there for the taking, gorgeous setting, enjoyable ship sailing, proper ship boarding mechanics, everything... And then spent 8yrs to make Skull and Bones, there has to be more to it, as someone mentioned there was obviously a tax incentive/subsidy from the Singaporean government which I can only assume was to make a ground up new game and not repurpose an old one

This. The task was just so fucking straightforward:

Take what has been established in Black Flag, remove the assassin stuff. Make a bigger world, more ships. A cool campaign where you can decide whether you want to ally with one of the colonial powers or go full-on pirate. And it would've been dope. Maybe include a fleet management meta-game or so.

Too much for this game. I got Cyberpunk 2077 and like 10 empty Cyberpunk steelbooks for $10 at Best Buy. So I need Skull and Bones to drop to at least 5 bucks to tempt me.

UBI must had had bad marketing because the game came out in Feb.

Critics knew (probably because they got free copies) as there's 50 reviews on MC getting a terrible MC score.

yep. an absolutely mystifying debacle. 10 years spent failing to build a better mousetrap...

I had such high, pie in the fucking sky hopes for this game. To be a Black Flag-alike without all the Asscreed shit. Then they went MMO. Then they went live service + full price game. Then I played the beta and it was mobile gacha garbage. Not even worth the $10, it should be F2P.

And I still wouldn't play it.

When you compare some historic studios from 2014 to 2024, you have to think either an entire generation of devs got fucking stupid with all the talent left to some place other than gaming or an entire generation of suits figured out a Mel Brook The Producers type of fraud scheme.....

....

or both.

All they had to do was remake Black Flag, add multiplayer, and make it graphically prettier. They had the code to work off of already. They had a proof of concept. I do not understand Western AAA sorry AAAA game studios in current year.

Last gen brought about GAAS running wild with season passes and mtx. Those big HDD allowed studios and gamers to stock up on DLC/mtx galore.

The 360/PS3 gen brought out tons of good games all the time. A good sequel would be every 2-3 years. 3 Mass Effects, 2 Fallout, 2 ES, a ton of Halo, Resistance, UC, racings games, etc... The 360/PS3 gen required studios pumping out games for ongoing sales.

Now, games take a long time, and made worse being stretched out with mtx if possible. Or they change things up hoping to hit the GAAS lottery (Suicide Squad taking forever to make instead of more tried and true Batman games).

Like I’ve said before; Ubisoft only puts out free trials for games they lack confidence in.
This had dud written on it from the start.
