Playing the game on chocolate doom is the experience you want, makes the game much more foreboding than some source port with loads of pretty goodies
 
I love stuff like this. The work and concepts that went into some games, especially ground breaking titles like this. Is there a book with this stuff for the original DOOM anywhere? I have the making of the DOOM 3 book, but the original would be fantastic.

John was nice enough to put a zip for the community to download. I'm sure a ton of my mapping friends including various famous mappers, xaser, jimmy and the rest are now going to use them in brand new megawad projects.

"The Masters of Doom" is the book you're looking for. And it's surprisingly readable, and I mean that as a novel, not just a game novel.

So awesome to see the unused stuff and new models.
With all the remakes these years it's almost strange that we haven't seen one of Doom. Would be so awesome if handled right.

The movie was on the other day, starring Dwayne "the rock" Jhonson, such a missed opportunity, it could have been like James Cameron's Aliens!!

Yeah. Surprisingly enough, you can recommend this book to anyone regardless if they enjoy video games or scoff at them, mainly because the book tells a story about talented yet rebellious youths set to the backdrop of the roaring 90's. There's something in that book for everyone.

On a side-note, while Doom is 21, let's not forget that Doom 2 is 20 this year.

Random: I remember reading that one of the wall textures was from a picture of one of the guys' scabs. For that alone this is one of the best game series ever.

You guys should really read, "The Masters of Doom," incredible story on how these two started the empire. Loved it a lot!

Great book. Had adrenaline highs all through it. Highly readable!

Here's something I haven't seen mentioned: the data Romero posted contains, among other things, full rotation sprites for the doomguy, marine and zombie; these sprites were known to exist but were never implemented in the final game for reasons unexplained, but now you can experience them in all their glory.

For comparison, here's a rotation anim from the "official" doomguy sprite: http://i.imgur.com/heMkij4.gif

Very cool of John to share it. Also, if you have any interest in id or Doom, you should read "Masters of Doom", for those that haven't done so already.

Fascinated by these guys and their story in general. They were doing awesome things, long before programming was a popular or "cool" thing to be involved in. You could almost argue they helped push computer gaming into the mainstream with Doom.

This shit is awesome.
I want t see this in a Doom COmplete mod of sorts.. along with the gib death for the DOom Guy.

BTW, is there a good doomworld thread about this?

I found it amazing when, early on, in order to work on their game in their personal time, they would pack up their desktops and bring them home every night/weekend. That is some dedication. I get annoyed just having to plug power and monitor into my laptop.

John Romero's one of the only guys who seems to have actually kept everything from those days. Super cool that he keeps releasing behind the scenes content like this.
