Did anyone play Zombie Daisuki? It was released before the Spike Chunsoft merger, I heard it's good.

Also this came and went. I thought Level-5 and Shu Takumi did a better job at making "next gen" Ace Attorney than Capcom's other team themselves. I liked the twist the fantasy world brought with it, and the use of 3D, voice acting, that live soundtrack and dynamic camera angles gave the courtroom scenes a really dramatic feel.

Yeah! I wanted to do an LTTP for it last year when I played it, but never did. I thought it was a great game though, never played the DS followup but King of Swing was really well designed around its novel mechanic. Seems like the DS followup is more expanded, but I'm not a fan of the return to prerendered visuals. Thought the sprites in KoS were rather charming

Fun fact: daisuki = lovable. Lovable zombies. Never heard of this game but I'm curious to learn more.

I have Layton vs. AA but am waiting to play the mainline AA games yet...which I still haven't gotten around to...but... I'm kinda waiting till my Japanese is good enough to play those in their original language.

I'd like to check out KOS since you enjoyed it so well! Thanks for the info. I generally prefer sprites to prerendered as well. The DS follow-up is obscenely hard (to me at least) and I couldn't make it past the final boss but I was honestly surprised I even made it that far...it took a lot of tries. The bonus levels IIRC were basically impossible to me. I definitely recommend the game though. The level design is very creative.

I tried this game and was so atrociously terrible at it. Like I could barely move an inch without dying. Maybe there is a correlation between my terrible RH skills and this.

I was really excited to play it because it is adorable.

It's a turn-based tactics game (like X-COM) from Julian Gollop (original X-COM creator) mixed with cartoon cutscenes. It's spun off from Gollop's Rebelstar series of tactics games on ZX Spectrum in the early-mid 80s.

...

Now let me tell y'all about Code Name S.T.E.A.M. ;)

Thanks for the info. I tried the CNS demo, my first of that type of game, and couldn't really get into it.

I really kind of regret not giving it a further try for $6 when Dr Stabbingworth was selling it for that price in BST. :/

If MXR turns out to be up my alley, I will try other games in the genre also.

Love that game, soundtrack was very good.

Here's my pick

かわいい~

Love Penguins in games. Does the game have anything to do with the NES Penguin game, Yume Penguin Monogatari?

I want a new Hammering Hero. That PSP was great. Got me into playing smaller budget Japanese games again, instead of just the big Square Enix and Studio Japan games.

It also introduced me to Atlus. I bought P3P right afterwards.

Outside of dedicated gaming communities such as this (and even then), I feel like this game gets lost in the shuffle?

I think it's an interesting take on Mario and certainly worth playing through at least once. I used to play it regularly as a kid. Just played it again recently though!

Remember the ribbing I took in work for buying this, I had the last laugh though cause it was great.

At the time it reminded me of Soccer Kid meets Marvin's Marvellous Adventure.

God I'm so old.

Stumbled on a copy of this earlier this year after convincing myself I dreamed it up as a kid. Still a really solid platformer even if the steel drum music is pretty annoying

Anyway, here's Blender Bros on GBA

2D platformer with fun boss fights and collectible pets that help you out in levels

That series is awesome, I came here to post Hammerin' Harry Ghost Building Company for Game Boy and that game is also the tits. I might like it better than the PSP one.

I played Donkey Kong '94 twenty years after it came out and was really impressed. A really good platformer that no one talks about.

I've heard what few publications even noticed this game came out describing it as "2D nirvana" back when 2D platformers had seemingly fallen out of popularity entirely. It certainly didn't catch my attention when it came out (and apparently no one else's either) -- I only heard of it when it released on the Wii U virtual console. Totally worth playing it, though, because it's amazing.

Kururin Paradise is definitely my pick, but that's been mentioned, so I'll dig deeper:

Pic_Pic_Cover.jpg

Pic Pic Drawing mode is probably my most-played DS games. Something like 1800 puzzles just in that mode. Some take 30-45 mins.

I wouldn't say it's underrated... It has a 94% on game rankings: http://www.gamerankings.com/ds/938413-pic-pic/index.html

It's just not widely known.

Extremely fun puzzles that get challenging after a while...

Also, obligatory mention of Donkey Kong '94 for the original Game Boy, since we can't sing its praises enough.

I feel like most people who know the GB library know that this is one of the best games on the system.

I'd go farther. It's one of the best games ever made, imo. It holds up beautifully, and if you've never played it, you ought to. It's available on VC on the 3DS, though the best way to play would be with a Super GameBoy on SNES.

100 amazing levels of puzzle platforming fun.

They only seem to be brought up these days when referring to the gimmick of the solar sensor on the carts... I remember even back on release there were people scoffing at the idea of having to go outside in order to do certain things in the games, and now look where we ended up with Pokemon GO.

I've noticed a lot of handheld "ports" or "versions" of more popular console games from that era end up being really good because the developers can just fall back on tried-and-tested 2D game designs from the SNES era. They couldn't do 3D (most of the time) and thus didn't have to actually emulate the more expensive console games. I remember the GBA version of Max Payne 2 getting a lot of praise and it seemed to be a similar kind of situation.

Also, obligatory mention of Donkey Kong '94 for the original Game Boy, since we can't sing its praises enough.

I'd never even heard of this game until it came out on 3DS Virtual Console. It probably is one of the greatest Game Boy games.

One thing I've noticed is there seem to be a lot of underrated Game Boy games that basically borrow the LInk's Awakening formula: top-down action adventure game with puzzles and an inventory of gear to equip to the face buttons.

Daikatana just got mentioned but another one is that Game Boy James Bond 007 game.

What I liked about it was it revealed that adventure game elements are actually a really good fit for Bond. The shooting action was eh but it had you do a lot of actual investigating and stuff. The most interesting level was probably the Marrakesh level where you had to check into a hotel, explore the city, talk to people, and eventually make it through a casino by playing actual card games.

Not going super niche here at all but for DS, Last Window Secret of Cape West and Super Scribblenauts.
The first is a sequel to the more commonly known Hotel Dusk of "I got myself a paperclip" smugness. It had a really strong atmosphere, really drew me in to its classic adventure gameplay style.
The second was the sequel of course to a hyped crash and burn title, as such it was overlooked but unleashing your creativity here was tons of fun, focusing puzzles directly around words and all around control improvements made a title that everyone who saw it at least wanted to toy with the novelty of its core gameplay mechanic.

I've had this sitting in my Wii U VC wishlist alongside DK King of Swing for years, I should probably buy them since the price cuts are never coming.

Damn you stole one of my post plans, right down to talking about Marrakesh!
What a stage, it taught a young me how to effectively gamble and play blackjack.
It's just a shame that the stages afterwards never quite have that adventuring element the first three do, aside from the Tibetan mountain stage it's all a bit too much action.

Shame we never got a 3DS sequel. Would have looked amazing in 3D.

Where's my Nanostray 3 damn it?!

And no, Nano Assault Neo doesn't count!

Guru Logi Champ is awesome, how did I forget? Spent last fall playing it on my Game Boy Micro. R.I.P. Compile. D4 Publisher has the rights to the series so I'm surprise it hasn't cropped up on Virtual Console. They did work with Nintendo to release Snapdots, which is basically the same concept but executed with less charm.

I'd place Lunar Knights in the "overlooked" category - I did pick it up a couple of years after launch but was disappointed in how shallow it was compared with Boktai.

There's a game I think about constantly that I remember loving when I was younger, but I don't even remember the name of it. If anyone could help it'd be awesome.

It was for the original GameBoy, I think it was called Temple something, or something along those lines and it had a pyramid or egyption theme.

It was a puzzle game and was mostly just an overtop look as you moved from tile to tile and each tile had different properties. But the main objective was basically getting rid of every tile and get to the end.

It's popped in my mind a lot lately as the Go games on mobile have really reminded me of it almost as an evolution of the game type. Been wondering what that original game was.

Art Style: Aquia a dsi ware download. It has fantastic music and sound effects with some fun puzzle gameplay. I really enjoy it.

It may only be out today, but I reckon it'll be forgotten and it deserves not to be:

Also, in a similar vein, Viva Piñata had a really great DS installment:

Never met another person who played this awesome game.

Omfg Lunar Knights, that was my shit back in the day. It was so good. Shame on me for selling it, I should probably get it again sometime. At least it's not crazy expensive.

Ironically I never like Boktai 1 or 2, but I liked this. Probably because I didn't need to mess around with a finicky solar panel on a GBA SP...

Some nice suggestions in here, keep 'em coming! DS and PSP are two of my favorite consoles ever, so many hidden gems and forgotten games i loved.

I suggested these many times, but they still never get enough love:

What is the point of this thread without explanations or descriptions of the games being shown? Even the OP says "And why?" and neglects to do so. This thread might as well be called "Boxarts of handheld games that may or may not exist".

I feel like nobody played/owned this one. I owned it and selling it is still one of my biggest regrets.
It's the best portable MGS game. Fight me.

My favourite Gameboy Color game of all time. I played it when I was about 11, and completed it, at a time when I very rarely completed games. And it wasn't an easy game, either. Not sure whether it still stands up (not sure I want to know, tbh), but based on memory/how I felt when I originally played it, it's probably in my top 20 games of all time.

I'll add these couple of games too:

Why aren't modern Mario sports games RPGs that have nothing to do with Mario?

Rule of thumb for every single "game with certain attribute?" thread: pictures upon pictures without words. At least now it's box arts so we can see what the game is. Normally it's gifs or screenshots that tell you nothing unless you get lucky and the name is part of the url to the image.
