Hope their stupid fucking MTX are worth the loss of all the sales they're going to endure.

This is a nail in the coffin of this stupid game. The gameplay is dull and looks extremely repetitive.

Whining about MTX (posting dick-sucking gifs) is just as embarrassing as moaning about the cost of a large popcorn at the movies: that fight is long over and you can just walk right by the concession stand to enjoy your flick. Or go on a forum and posture about being so principled that you wont even bother with a game that has MTX regardless of how it is implemented into the finished product. Both equally fine and noble actions.

. . .also an 18 for MTX?! They really take that shit seriously I guess.
Preach!

Also the 18 rating likely has very little to do with the in game purchases or even the violence since it looks to be mostly fantasy violence.
There seems to be liberal alcohol drinking.......drugs and alcohol can carry a heavy price on the PEGI rating depending on how its portrayed.
The main character is also suicidal - Suicidal connotations carry a hefty toll on your PEGI rating, pretty much all media when you really think about it, Im sure youve noticed TV shows these days even have trigger warnings now if a character is suicidal or commits suicide.
She also swears alot...im guessing if they took out her suicidal tendencies the rating would drop to 16....but mature stories and all that jazz.
Hope their stupid fucking MTX are worth the loss of all the sales they're going to endure.

What mtx?
ugh Jesus. In-game purchases and future possible expansions are not in the same bucket. Also stop changing the words, DLC can also be classified as mtx or as expansion. We'll see when it launches.
Mate.
With PEGI mtx and dlc and expansions are the same shit, as long as you pay for it then its an in game purchase.
Will it have actual mtx? I dont know.
What I do know is that its going to be getting a prequel expansion, which was my point, you are immediately going to mtx purely on conjecture......im saying they have already announced a prequel DLC chapter so PEGI has to put the in game purchases rating even if the game has no other mtx.

While that was definitely immature, I do think people have a right to voice their complaints. I've seen what apathy does. It is smart to reserve one's energy and walk away when needed, but I do think monetization in gaming needs to be challenged. Some of these things DO affect gameplay. There are obviously some games that don't abuse some of these things, but a full expansion from The Witcher 3 is not the same thing as what EA is doing with the Sims 4 or games that implement DLC packs for fighting games.

With that said, from reading the Steam page, it looks like the game is doing the bare minimum IAP like some very minor upgrades and some additional story DLC which I'm more okay with.

PEGI does not give ratings based on nothing or maybe's or rumors lmfao unless that expansion already exists or it's finished which I highly doubt.

Forspoken, the upcoming game from Square Enix has been rated in Europe by PEGI, and has received an 18 rating.

According to the rating board, this is due to the “use of strong language (‘f**k’), as well as milder terms,” as well as violence, both realistic and in the fantasy setting.

The use of alcohol and the inclusion of in-game purchases are also cited as reasons for the rating. “The player’s character can order alcoholic drinks at a bar. The drinks affect the player’s statistics, but do so in a random manner with negative outcomes possible,” claims the PEGI website.

According to PEGI, “the game also includes scenes of realistic violence, including a woman being set upon by a group of thugs who punch and kick her and hold a gun to her head. There is also violence against fantasy characters, who are knocked backwards by attacks and bleed yellow blood.”

The rating board also highlights that at one point in the game, it appears that the main character plans to drunkenly take her own life, before being saved by a mysterious entity.

Announced in June 2020, Forspoken is the debut game from Square’s Luminous Productions studio. It will reportedly be a PlayStation console exclusive for two years.

The lead character Frey is portrayed by English actress Ella Balinska, who is known for starring in 2019 film Charlie’s Angels.

Following a delay, the game will now release on October 11, 2022.

In VGC’s recent preview, we said that Forspoken had the chance to be a “PS5 showpiece”.

“Coming from the team behind Final Fantasy XV, which revolutionised Final Fantasy combat, by making it actually fun to play is a great sign. The various abilities that have been teased in the footage seem to point to a game with a lot of variety, but how much of that will make into the final experience is yet to be seen.”
If only one could buy liquor in games and not have to get up and go to the store... That's all i ask for their metaverse

Well in Xenoblade 3 also has “in-game purchases” but that’s mostly mean it’s going have DLC like XC2 with Torna instead of microtransactions.

While there may be micro-transactions in the game (who knows), but even if there aren't, the above-mentioned "in-game purchases" would still be there because there is a Deluxe Edition upgrade, which is counted as an in-game purchase.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart (a game with 0 micro-transactions) also had that in the rating.

I feel many are just jumping the gun.

Honestly im not even sure what you are arguing?
You read in game purchases and immediately jumped to mtx....you further express that ALL mtx are bad yet expansions in a game like Square did with Final Fantasy XV doesnt count as mtx so thats fine.
I asked you to quantify when a micro transaction becomes just a transaction cuz the FFXV chapters were like 5 bucks each....id call that a microtransaction so do those expansions fall into the ALL mtx suck category or can they fall into DLC expansions are okay cuz its literally semantics and you sound really unhinged.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. You know, there are addiction specialists that can help you with your inability to NOT enter into a transaction with game publishers for miniscule gaming content - a miniscutransaction if you will. Might I suggest Dr. Drew?

Gaming sucks nowadays because PEGI has to announce if a game has any dlc?

I don’t understand why people are overreacting over this… MTX has been part of AAA for years now.

Wait so the inclusion of micro transactions is listed as one of the reasons for the age rating? Has that ever been done before?

EA case must have caused this rating change.
People didn't like exploitable mtx, which is aimed at kids. Hence, why the age ratings for mtx.

Still, there are other games, which have mtx, that are targeted towards kids. So it's weird that they are doing that.

Fuck off. As long as it's optional is not a problem at all. Arise has it and it's not needed at all, unless you're lazy. MTX is for lazy people. Now stop acting like a dick.
It's still not defendable. You might see it as optional and not needed, but there will always be a part of the game that has been designed with these micro transactions in mind, it's made for that purpose, to frustrate the player and make them want to pay to progress. I agree with you on the fact that it often seems optional, I myself never paid any boosters in Assassin's Creed or whatever, but you can still imagine that if these micro transactions didn't exist, some stuff in the game might have been different, like less grind etc.

Wait... you're a gold GAF member, hating on the concept of about paying for additional digital benefits?

Consumers are free to support producers of products with purchases of additional content for things they are interested in. That's the modern market, that product providers are making as much content as its consumer base is interested in. There are "abusers" of that system, where publishers produce products with the sole intent of hooking an audience into countless small purchases and squirrelling away the better parts of content behind a paywall, but most product providers have learned that this is a shitty way to make money (unless you're a mobile game producer, in which case it's the only way to make money...) Most game development business models are based around finding a balance.

(BTW, not a drag, good on you for supporting GAF. Things cost money to make and maintain.)

I don’t understand why people are overreacting over this… MTX has been part of AAA for years now.

We're coming up on not just "years", but "decades".

Wait so the inclusion of micro transactions is listed as one of the reasons for the age rating? Has that ever been done before?

It's becoming common practice for PEGI ratings, as there has been pressure to curb "loot box gambling" as well as child addiction/habits to payments.

I want to make an announcement.

*clears throat*

Fuck MTX, fuck DLCs, fuck cutting content out of the final product to sell it for an extra price and fuck putting dev time in developing MTX shit. And fuck any GaaS thingie while we are at it.

"But Tinto! Microtransactions have been here forever! Why aren't you used to it?"

No. Fuck that. I want to pay for the complete product, and above all else I don't want to think that part of the dev time and resources went to make MTX shits instead of polishing the actual product I just paid for.

Like holy fuck, imagine spending 70€ on a game and, once you have installed it, being welcome by a "please purchase more shit" page.

Expansion packs are fine tho, but only if they have been developed after the whole game, instead of being cut off from the main game to sell it for an extra (looking at you, Atlus).

pd: not talking exclusively about Forspoken here.

Ever since the new PEGI policies alot more things are listed and counted into the PEGI rating any games that may have in game purchases has to disclose it.

Remember how parents were getting their asses handed to them cuz their kids would ask to buy a 1 thing in FIFA Ultimate team, enter the credit card then at the end of the month parents find out thousands of pounds have been spent.
Well for parents to know such a thing might happen with said game they need to know the game has potential for in game purchases.
With that rating on they cant come at the devs or the bank and say "WTF you didnt tell me this game was gonna cost me money.....and then cost me money again".

P.S Its not about micro transactions its simply about a game having any content that requires further purchasing with real money.
So even games that only have massive not "micro" transaction have to disclose that the game has potential to eat more of your money outside of the purchase price.

P.P.S Even lootboxes have their own rating now, in game gambling has its own rating now.
Even frikken Fear has its own PEGI level....can this game possibly scare a child under xx years old, well you better tell them that.
It might be all cute and shit but when that boss in Sackboys Adventure shows up a young child mite get frightened so dont come complaining to us that you shithead child starts crying because the boss scared them.

P.P.P.S I shit you not Sackboy Adventure has a Fear badge on its PEGI rating specifically because some of the bosses are large and could scare young children.

As long as the MTX's don't largely impact the SP then it's fine

It also looks like there's a bunch of different spells and attacks in the game to keep things interesting but we'll see

Microtransactions in single player games are just for lazy gamers and shouldn't really exist. Multiplayer ones you could make an argument for when it's cosmetics

I'm not in game development, but from any conversations I have had about game design. that's not how the MTX side of game development gets handled. They build the bulk of the game, then see where MTX might fit in, rather than building the product around MTX. (And in cases where they are MTX-first, they're using a GAAS or Gacha model where they're not necessarily adding in artificial roadblocks so much as building the curve around investment curves of time versus money, or a count of how many characters are in the game and what power levels contribute to what. So it's more math than an intentional painpoint inserted in, and it's on the developer to figure out how best to sort the math between free versus deluxe access. The money is not in getting players roadblocked, it's in making sure they keep playing in order for the game to stay hot, and so although most people think of MTX as nickle-and-diming, successful games have a smart balance where the curve is balanced and both free and paid players have a good time.)

The idea that developers are twisting their mustaches to think of evil ways to make their games unwinnable without paying in, that's not been a real experience I've encountered too much. Sort of like the coin-op idea that they made games super-hard to constantly suck quarters (the original MTX), if you talk with old arcade guys from back in the day, they weren't putting in cheap hits to make the game bilk players, they either just didn't focus on balance back then or they liked hard games or they could see player interest waning in tests where there was no credible threat. You would build a difficulty curve, and place sections that really tested the player (and tested the depth of their pockets,) but if you were smart, you didn't make the opponent systems unfair. If you designed a game that was no fun and just sucked quarters, that game likely wouldn't get any quarters put into it after a quick while.

While there may be micro-transactions in the game (who knows), but even if there aren't, the above-mentioned "in-game purchases" would still be there because there is a Deluxe Edition upgrade, which is counted as an in-game purchase...

I feel many are just jumping the gun.

Jumping the gun or not, it's weird that everybody is shocked by the mere mention of MTX. There's already a pretty good definition of what is a micro-transaction in this game through its Digital Deluxe listing:

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0082-PPSA03982_00-ATHIADD000000001

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart (a game with 0 micro-transactions) also had that in the rating.

Basically anything that might have a purchasing backend will probably get this mark in time, and maybe even games with unexpected content.

Like, there's a gun in Rift Apart that throws other PlayStation Universe characters at enemies, and so if Insomniac added more characters to that, technically that would count as "interactive element" because you could be buying the game for its T-rated antics but all the sudden some character you didn't expect your children to be exposed to is newly in the game. That wouldn't usually be listed in the "In-Game Purchases" descriptor, though, that's its own little note in the ratings metadata.

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
The rating boards consider DLC to be in-game purchases as well. It could even be single-player DLC that expands the original story. There is no distinction
Given the current climate of most games being glorified slot machines, there really should be a distinction on the rating boards.

Whether or not I buy popcorn doesn't impact my ability to enjoy the entirety of the film. That's what prison pockets are for.

MTX impact the entire structure of a game's design. Everything whether it be UI, progression systems, or even weapon balance is subject to this bullshit.

Welp, won't be buying now. Don't support MXT in any form.
Isnt this you?
Waiting for Xpack + GOTY version.
So you dont support paid additional content except in games where you pay for the additional content in the "GOTY edition"?
So why not just wait for Forspoken Complete edition?
And havent you already bought Horizon Forbidden West a game that also has a PEGI in game purchases rating?
